Where is the One whose holy spirit was placed in their midst; whose glorious arm was made to march at the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to make a reputation for all time\u201d (verse 11-12)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surely You are our Father: Though Abraham regard us not, and Israel recognize us not, You, O ETERNAL One, are our Father; from of old, Your name is \u2018Our Redeemer\u2019\u201d (verse 16).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses makes his first direct appearance in the book of Isaiah here, while Abraham and Jacob\/Israel have appeared before. Usually, a prophet will invoke the forefathers to ask them to intercede on behalf of the people or to inspire the people to remember the glory days of old. The message of chapter 63, however, is that the people cannot rely on their forefathers to save them. They remember the stories of Moses bringing the people through the Red Sea, but Moses is not there to save them now. By verse 16, Abraham and Israel are not fondly remembered. They are only mentioned for the fact that they do not pay attention to the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The people know they can only rely on God. That is why the chapter ends with a direct supplication to God: \u201cRelent for the sake of Your servants, the tribes that are Your very own!\u201d (verse 17). In other contexts, this verse could be interpreted as \u201crelent for the sake of your servants, the forefathers, and do not forsake us.\u201d For example, when God promises Isaac that he will continue the blessings for him: \u201cFear not, for I am with you, and I will bless you and increase your offspring <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the sake of My servant Abraham<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (Genesis 26:18) or when God promises Solomon he will not destroy split the kingdom in his lifetime: \u201cBut, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the sake of your father David<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> I will not do it in your lifetime; I will tear it away from your son\u201d (I Kings 11:12).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, however, the people do not look to someone in the past to save them. Instead, they pray to God to save them for their own sake. Isaiah\u2019s message is that the people cannot always default to looking to others for help. (verse 17).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God in the Torah, speaks about giving humanity choices to either opt for good or bad, blessings or curses (see Deut. 10:15-20,) stemming from the embedding within human beings the ability to choose freely (see Gen. 1:26-7).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, to even imply that God undermines a person\u2019s ability to act righteously, strikes at an important theological assumption of Jewish thought upon which is built the ability to repent, and reward and punishment (see Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Laws of Repentance, Chapter 5).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi, in his commentary to Isaiah 63, looks to objectify the issue, and therefore asserts that since God can do away with anything He has created within a person (Ez. 36:26: \u201cI will remove the heart of stone from your body and give you a heart of flesh\u201d), God\u2019s allowing the continued presence of the evil inclination within people is clearly the fault of God!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak and others see a sociological and psychological cause for Jewish apostasy that is traceable to God, with respect to: 1)\u00a0 the interminable Jewish exile from the holy land, and 2) the general \u201csuccess\u201d of evil doers within the broader society.\u00a0 Since, by definition, God can: 1) return the Jews to their homeland in speedy fashion, and 2) punish transgressors in a more clear-cut manner. If things don\u2019t improve, God could be blamed for Jewish frustration, and ultimately, their lack of compliance with the commandments.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the prophet in v. 17 is reflecting what ordinary people are saying, rather than believing these arguments himself, the point appears to be valid, at least for some. Although there have always been individuals who are faithful, fully prepared for whatever their surroundings might seem to imply regarding their unquestioned loyalty to the Divine, others are not so sanguine and given a good excuse, are ready to abandon the tenets of their belief for what they consider more tenable beliefs. And then, of course, there are those who find themselves \u201cin between.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, while some might perceive God\u2019s plan as a requirement to submit to His plans for the world, others relish the freedom that not having things \u201cin your face,\u201d and even the \u201cHiding of God\u2019s Face\u201d (see Deut. 31:18; 32:20) affords them. So afflicted, they began to reflect on their historical fate, recollecting the better times they had once experienced. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then they remembered the ancient days, Him, who pulled (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moshe<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) His people out [of the water]: Where is He who brought them up from the sea along with the shepherd of His flock? Where is He who put in their midst His holy spirit? Who made His glorious arm march at the right hand of Moses (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moshe<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Who divided the waters before them to make Himself a name for all time\u201d (11-12).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi explained, simply, that Israel, in exile, became nostalgic for its past glory, which they personified in Moses and epitomized in the crossing of the Sea. Radak elaborated, suggesting that the exodus from Egypt was cited, specifically, because, although many Jews there had fallen under the sway of\u00a0 idolatry, God nevertheless redeemed them, and the crossing of the sea was mentioned because God effected it despite the Israelites having complained \u201care there no cemeteries in Egypt that you have taken us out to die in the wilderness?\u201d (Exodus 14:11). In other words, these particular examples were chosen because they promised salvation even in the absence of complete righteousness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our ongoing preoccupation with Malbim\u2019s* substantive interpretations does not free us from making other observations on the text of Isaiah and its exegesis. One particularly noteworthy point arises apropos of a single Hebrew word that we have highlighted in two of the aforementioned verses: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moshe<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In its second appearance, \u201cat the right hand of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moshe<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d it clearly is a proper noun and is properly translated \u201cMoses.\u201d The question is, what of the previous verse, \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moshe<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> His people\u201d? Our translation (Jewish Publication Society, 1978) treated it as a verb meaning to pull out, clearly regarding it as a pun on the noun Moshe (Moses), and basing itself on Exodus 2:10: \u201c[Pharaoh\u2019s daughter] named him Moshe, because I have pulled him out of the water.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra cited this possibility, but rejected it, as did Malbim. Ibn Ezra read the opening clause of v. 10 as \u201cThey recalled Moses <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his people (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ve-`amo<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">),\u201d and Malbim made the \u201cpeople\u201d its subject, reading \u201cHis people recalled the days of yore, [the days of] Moses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*For the significance of Malbim\u2019s commentary to the Book of Isaiah,<\/span><a In chapter 12 of Isaiah there is a full psalm of thanksgiving as an integral part of the vision of redemption and ingathering of exiles, and the sages point out a psalm scattered throughout the chapters of Jerusalem\u2019s salvation (Is. 24\u201327). Likewise, Hezekiah\u2019s psalm of thanks\u00adgiving for his recovery from illness (38:9\u201320) appears only in Isaiah, and not in the parallel chapters in the Book of Kings.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah\u2019s disciples continued on his prophetic path, with lofty ideas and a lyrical style, from Manasseh\u2019s time until Jerusalem\u2019s destruction, which is described in the final historical psalm:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lord\u2019s kindnesses I will mention; the Lord\u2019s praises, for all the Lord has bestowed upon us. (63:7)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening mention of God\u2019s kindness, together with the mention of Moses\u2019 song at the sea after the exodus from Egypt (63:7\u201314), recall Psalm 106:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who can express the Lord\u2019s might or proclaim all his praises. (106:2)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He blasted the Sea of Reeds and it dried up, and He led them through the deep as if through the wilderness. (106:9)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They forgot God their savior. (106:21)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What follows in Isaiah is:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they rebelled, and vexed His holy spirit\u2026Dividing the water before them\u2026That led them through the deep like a horse in the wilderness. (Is. 63:10\u201313)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afterwards, we find a great cry in the face of terrible destruction:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look down from heaven and see\u2026Where is Your fervor, Your acts of might? (64:9\u201310)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This cry is similar to Jeremiah\u2019s cry in his final prophecy (Jer. 32:16\u201325), and to the cries of the psalms of destruction.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why, O God, have You abandoned us forever (Ps 74:1);<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arise, O God, champion Your cause (74:22);<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long, O Lord, will You be furious forever (79:5);<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long, O Lord, will You remain hidden forever (89:47);<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O God of hosts, come back now, look down from heaven and see (80:15);<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shine Your face and we will be saved. (80:20)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The school of psalmists existed in Jerusalem from David\u2019s time until after the destruction of the Temple. David\u2019s followers, and Assaf and Ethan the Ezrahite, continued composing psalms through divine inspiration. Isaiah and his disciples took part in this lyrical composition through prophecy, and as David\u2019s psalms inspired psalmists after him, Isaiah\u2019s prophecies inspired his disciples to prophesy in Instead, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mosheh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used as a verb here, the verb with which the name of Moses is etymologized. Is this the actual Edom, the neighboring political power, or Edom - as a symbol of an evil kingdom? There are various answers in learned commentaries and academic research. It\u2019s worth knowing though, that this prophecy is not alone on this. In another 325 chapters, we will encounter a psalm from the days of the return to Zion, that also calls for divine retribution on Edom (see Ps 137 verses 7-9).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Red (\u201cAdom\u201d) Edom<\/em>. The word and color plays are very vivid. The color of the clothes of the one who comes from Edom are red (adumim). Coming from the city of Batzra, he looks like a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">botzer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a harvester or trodder of grapes. But his clothes are not red from the juice of grapes, but from the blood of the Edomites.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Bottom up<\/em>. The second half of the chapter is not a prophecy but a prayer. The prophet, who is generally a messenger bringing the message of God to the people, here works in the opposite direction: from the people to God.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Warm regards from Moshe\/Moses<\/em>. It is not surprising that Moshe\u2019s name is mentioned in the context of the exodus from Egypt, but this hasn\u2019t occurred now for many many chapters. Two instances though occur in this chapter, in verses 11-12.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>More fatherly than the fathers<\/em>. \u201cSurely You are our Father: Though Abraham regard us not, And Israel recognize us not,\u201d and even if our forefathers don\u2019t acknowledge: \u201cYou, O LORD, are our Father;
