Our chapter continues the prayer of penitence, begun in<\/span> Isaiah 63:15<\/span><\/a>, in which God is petitioned to have compassion on His people, for God is their true father: \u201cBut now, O Lord, You are our Father\u2026\u201d (<\/span>Isaiah 64:7<\/span><\/a>). This is one of several places in the Hebrew Bible in which God is referred to metaphorically as the spiritually creative \u201cFather\u201d of the people of Israel as a whole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is in contrast to Christianity in which Jesus, as an individual, is regarded as being genetically descended from God as part of the<\/span> Trinity<\/span><\/a> of God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. For example, the<\/span> The Lord's Prayer<\/span><\/a>, which opens Jesus\u2019 petition to God \u201cOur Father, who art in Heaven\u201d is echoed in the frequently used Hebrew petition to God \u201cOur Father in Heaven\u201d (<\/span>Avinu Shebashamayim<\/span><\/em>). This expression is found three times at the end of\u00a0 <\/span>Mishnah Sotah<\/span><\/a>: \u201cUpon whom is there for us to rely? Only upon our Father in Heaven.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Midrash Exodus Rabbah<\/span><\/a> preserves a<\/span> proem<\/span><\/a> that opens:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cBut now, O Lord, You are our Father\u201d (<\/span>Isaiah 64:7<\/span><\/a>)<\/span>.<\/b> The Holy One, blessed be He, challenged Israel: Only now am I your father?! When you find yourselves in trouble you call Me, \"Our Father!\" They replied, Yes!, As it says, \u201cIn my time of distress I turn to the Lord\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 77:3<\/span><\/a>)
\r\n<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>This can be explicated with a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>parable<\/span><\/a>. The son of an eminent physician encountered a a charlatan (posing as a physician) whom he addressed in Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew as \u201cmy Master (<\/span>Kiri<\/span><\/em>), my Lord (<\/span>Mari<\/span><\/em>), my Father (<\/span>Avi<\/span><\/em>)!\u201d. When the son\u2019s real father heard this, he declared in anger that his son may no longer come to him, since he now calls a quack his father! However, when the son fell ill, he pleaded, Please call my father to see me. When his father heard that his son was ill, his mercy was immediately stirred towards his son, and he went to visit him. The son begged his father, please, father, examine me! To which the father replied: So, now I am your father, though only yesterday you called that quack your father?! However, only now that you are ill, you call me father.
\r\n<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>Similarly, God said to Israel, Only yesterday you worshiped idols, addressing them as father, as it says: \u201cThey said to wood, you are my father\u201d (<\/span>Jeremiah 2:27<\/span><\/a>). But now you call upon Me as Father, as it says: \u201cBut now, O Lord, You are our Father\u201d (<\/span>Isaiah 64:7<\/span><\/a>)<\/span>...<\/b>God said, You ignored your own father, as it says, \u201cLook back to Abraham your father\u201d (<\/span>Isaiah 51:2<\/span><\/a>). They replied, Lord of the Universe! But, now we understand that He who raises children is called their father, not he who begets them, as it says: \u201cSurely, You are our Father, though Abraham regard us not\u201d (<\/span>Isaiah 63:16<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A well-known anecdote tells of a man struggling to survive a flood who is so focused on a miraculous rescue that he refused to be hoisted into a hovering helicopter, declaring: \u201cI am a man of faith and God will save me.\u201d He drowned, and when he met his Maker and complained that God had let hm down, He replied, \u201cWho do you think sent the helicopter?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The balance between blind faith and human endeavor is reflected in Malbim\u2019s commentary on two successive verses in this chapter:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet you have struck him who would gladly do justice and remember You in Your ways. It is because You are angry that we have sinned; we have been steeped in them from of old, and can we be saved? We have all become like an unclean thing, and all our virtues like a filthy rag. We are all withering like leaves, and our iniquities, like a wind, carry us off (4-5).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Malbim* commented:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

[Isaiah] said: In the manner You acted then\u2014i.e., when You split the Sea and descended in days of yore to perform wonders [<\/span>see our comments <\/span><\/a>to the previous chapter]\u2014in this manner, You surely encountered someone who rejoiced in being righteous, because in a miraculous situation, one is bound to encounter righteous people who rejoice in their righteousness. Seeing Your wonders [persuades them] to be righteous and to rejoice in\u00a0 it. (4)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Now, however, that You no longer act in a miraculous fashion and do not descend to earth from heaven to perform wonders, You will not encounter anyone rejoicing in righteousness. \u201cWe have all become like an unclean thing\u201d to the extent that we have drawn apart from holiness like one who is impure, who is sanctioned from [touching] anything sacred or entering the Temple. (5)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This distinction presumes that it is easier to maintain one\u2019s faith in an era of visible miracles than in one in which God acts obliquely. While this is logical and may be true for many, I would like to suggest that precisely because it is a greater challenge to sustain belief in an era devoid of overt miracles that it becomes more rewarding.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Isaiah 64:9 the prophet describes Jerusalem and Zion as a wilderness (<\/span>midbar<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The use of the Hebrew <\/span>midbar<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/em> seems like an apt way to describe Jerusalem after the destruction of the Temple. As will become evident later in Tanach, the description was quite absolute, with almost the entire population expelled and the city itself destroyed. Furthermore, the location of Jerusalem, near the Judean desert evokes an image of the wilderness overtaking the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But there is a second layer to Isaiah\u2019s use of the word <\/span>midbar<\/span><\/em>. The <\/span>midbar<\/span><\/em> evokes the history of the Israelites wandering through the <\/span>midbar<\/span><\/em> after leaving Egypt. Even though this forty year sojourn was a punishment, God still remained to protect the people with fire at night and a pillar of smoke during the day. God also ensured that the Israelites made it to the Holy Land safely to fulfill His promise. In this way, Isaiah is reminding the people that even in the destruction, when hope seems to be lost, when God has punished the people, God will still be there to protect. Yes, Jerusalem is destroyed like the <\/span>midbar<\/span><\/em>, but God will still protect his people as he did in the <\/span>midbar<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This plea concludes the collective supplication: in light of the terrible devastation--Jerusalem turned into a desolate place, the Temple in ruins, the whole people cast off like a filthy rag--God must surely relent His fury and restore Zion. All this is very far from the upbeat vision of national redemption articulated by Second Isaiah and almost certainly reflects an earlier historical moment.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. The mountains are flowing (or quaking)<\/em>. That is how God\u2019s revelation looked in the past (verse 2). That\u2019s also how Deborah the prophetess described it in her song of 182 chapters ago \u201cThe mountains quaked\u2014 Before the LORD, Him of Sinai, Before the LORD, God of Israel\u201d (Judges 5:5).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Filthy rags and withering leaves<\/em>. That is the magnitude of the wretchedness of those who are far from God. See verse 5.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Lamentations<\/em>. The last verses of the chapter (8-11) are reminiscent of Eicha, the Book of Lamentations, bemoaning the destruction of the temple and of Judah.
