Chapter 59 begins with a response to an unheard accusation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

No, GOD\u2019s arm is not too short to save, or ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have been a barrier between you and your God\u2014 your sins have made the divine face turn away as [God] refuses to hear you\u201d (verses 1-2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The people must be complaining they are in exile and God cannot help them outside Israel. Isaiah\u2019s response is that the fault here lies with the people\u2019s actions, not with God\u2019s inability to help them. Their wrongful ways caused God to hide his face from them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The idea of God\u2019s hidden face goes all the way back to Cain and Abel. After Cain kills Abel, God punishes Cain by making him wander the earth as a reject. Cain was scared at the edict.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Behold, today You have banished me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I am to be hidden. I am to be unsettled and a wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me, will kill me (Genesis 4:14).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God responded to Cain by placing a mark on him and promising that anyone who kills Cain would themselves be targeted for death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps Isaiah uses the same phrase to add a little comfort to this very negative chapter. Yes it is the people\u2019s fault that God is not helping them, but, just like Cain, their exile is not without some protection. It may seem like God has completely hidden his face from the people, but Israel will always be God\u2019s nation. Even in exile, anyone who tries to harm God\u2019s nation will face the same wrath as those that sought to harm Cain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He shall come as redeemer to Zion, to those in Jacob who turn back from sin \u2014declares the LORD. And this shall be My covenant with them, said the LORD: My spirit which is upon you, and the words which I have placed in your mouth, shall not be absent from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your children, nor from the mouth of your children\u2019s children\u2014said the LORD\u2014from now on, for all time. (20-21)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These closing verses of our chapter comprise the opening of a prayer recited towards the close of the daily <\/span>shaharit<\/span><\/em> service, conventionally known by its first two words as <\/span>Uva le-Tziyon<\/span><\/em>. Malbim*, who has consistently sought to view Isaiah\u2019s prophecies in the light of his contemporary Jewish experience, shared the following insight in his commentary here.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The redeemer will come to Zion to restore the glory of Zion, the Temple, and the Sanhedrin. He will also come to the penitents, the exiles, who will be brought to repentance by the oppression of their enemies. And were one to ask: How will they subsist until that time, which is yet distant? The reply is: \u201cThis is My covenant.\u201d I have forged a covenant with them. \u201cFor My spirit that is upon thee\u201d refers to the words of the prophets, and \u201cthe words I have placed in your mouth\u201d refers to the words of Torah that Moses set before Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cThey shall not budge from your mouth:\u201d Initially, [the Jews] utilized prophecy up to Haggai, Zachariah, and Malachi. Once prophecy was sealed up, Malachi, at the close of his own prophecy\u2014which is also the close of prophecy in general\u2014 said: \u201cRecall the Torah of Moses My servant\u201d (3:22) \u2026 This is how [the Jews] will subsist. This is a covenant of salt (<\/span>b\u2019rit melach<\/span><\/em>) that neither your descendants nor your reputation will perish.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What is a \u201ccovenant of salt\u201d? The term is used in Numbers 18:19, in the context of the priestly prerogatives, and its only other appearance is in 2 Chronicles 13:5, describing God\u2019s promise to David of his uninterrupted dynastic rule. Salt is a preservative; a covenant of salt is a covenant that is guaranteed to be preserved.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The most detailed description of the corruption of Manasseh\u2019s generation introduces the final chapter of the most gruesome prophetic sequence in the Bible (before the Book of Ezekiel). It includes \u201cinnocent blood\u201d (Is. 59:3, 7), robbery, violence, and false words: \u201cThey hatch vipers\u2019 eggs\u2026 whoever eats of their eggs dies\u201d (59:5).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

All of these constitute \u201cthe hiding of God\u2019s face\u201d that created a barrier between God and Judah:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cBut your iniquities have been a barrier between you and your God, your sins have made Him turn His face away and refuse to hear you\u201d (59:2).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The groups of prophets and their disciples had to feel their way around in the darkness: \u201cLike those without eyes we grope; we stumble at noon, as if in darkness; among the sturdy, we are like the dead\u201d (59:10). They blindly hoped for salvation, but it \u201cis far from us\u201d (59:11). The bitter struggle of the prophet\u2019s disciples against the stable, cruel government of Manasseh, which lasted for fifty-five years (II Kings 21:1), bore ter\u00adrible prophecies of vengeance. God, seeing that \u201cthere is no one,\u201d will appear as a God of vengeance (Is. 59:15\u201318), for only then will fear of the Lord spread \u201cfrom west\u2026and from the east\u2026and a Redeemer will come to Zion\u201d (59:19\u201320).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The prophet concludes by renewing the eternal covenant of redemption:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cAs for Me, this is My covenant with them, says the Lord, My spirit that is upon you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will never cease from your mouth or from the mouths of your descendants and the mouths of your descendants\u2019 descendants says the Lord, from now and forever\u201d (59:20\u201321).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

59:21 \u201cAs for Me, this is My covenant with them,\u201d said the LORD, \u201cMy spirit that is upon you and My word that I put in your mouth--they shall not depart from your mouth and from the mouth of your seed and from the mouth of the seed of your seed,\u201d said the LORD, \u201cfrom now and for all time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The \u201cyou\u201d is singular, but the claim that it refers to the prophet, with \u201cyour seed\u201d indicating his disciples, is questionable. Similar formulations in Deuteronomy and elsewhere clearly indicate the spirit of God that will continue to invest the covenanted people for all time, and there is no warrant for the use of \u201cseed\u201d in the sense of \u201cdisciple\u201d rather than as a term for biological offspring. \u201cSeed\u201d in precisely this sense repeatedly figures in the covenantal promises to Abraham.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. No justice<\/em>. This is the serious accusation against the people (verse 8), but it\u2019s also the people\u2019s greatest worry, and returns in the lament that they bring in verses 9-16. So - maybe instead of complaining, you could just do justice?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. The spidery man<\/em>. The evildoers, like spiders, spin webs and hatch schemes to try to snare their victims. But all their evil deeds are but wisps of spider webs \u201cTheir webs will not serve as a garment\u201d (verse 6), which won\u2019t even cover them.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. And other critters<\/em>. The spiders aren\u2019t the only ones - look for a snake, a bear and a dove.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. The uniform of salvation<\/em>.
