The chapter begins with flowery language that describes the wealth pouring in from various corners of the land. Nations will bring their best animals to add to the wealth of Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the middle of the chapter, Isaiah changes his rhetoric by using an animal as a symbol and not as an object. \u201cWho are these that float like a cloud, Like doves to their cotes?\u201d (verse 8). What do the doves symbolize?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Soncino commentary explains that the doves are used as examples of the sails of ships of Tarshish that appear in verse 9. The white doves racing back to their nests match the white sails of the swift ships racing towards Israel. Soncino\u2019s explanation matches the theme of the chapter of various nations coming to Jerusalem with their bounty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra links the dove image to verse 4:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raise your eyes and look about: They have all gathered and come to you. Your sons shall be brought from afar, your daughters like babes on shoulders.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doves then are the children of Israel returning swiftly back to the land. Doves seem to fly faster when they return home than when they leave. The image of the doves shows the people\u2019s haste to return home.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra\u2019s explanation may be further supported by \u201cWe all growl like bears and moan like doves. We hope for redress, and there is none; for victory, and it is far from us\u201d (59:11) from the previous chapter. The doves crying out in chapter 59, along with the bears, are the people of Israel in exile. This symbol creates a link between the two chapters. Chapter 59 is the nation distraught in exile and chapter 60 is their return. The wailing doves of chapter 59 are able to race back home to their glorious capital in chapter The exiles who left the land in poverty will return with great wealth:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raise your eyes and look about: They have all gathered and come to you. Your sons shall be brought from afar, Your daughters like babes on shoulders. As you behold, you will glow; Your heart will throb and thrill\u2014 For the wealth of the sea shall pass on to you, The riches of nations shall flow to you. Dust clouds of camels shall cover you, dromedaries of Midian and Ephah. They all shall come from Sheba; They shall bear gold and frankincense, and shall herald the glories of the LORD (60:4-6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those returning will have so many camels that the dust they kick up will cover everyone. Two words are used for camels in the last verse: camels and dromedaries. The Hebrew for \u201ccamels\u201d is the common word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gamal<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ultimately the source of the English word \u201ccamel\u201d. But the Hebrew original for \u201cdromedary\u201d is the rare <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bekher<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A more precise translation would be \u201cyoung camel\u201d, and that is the meaning of the Arabic cognate <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bakr<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bekher<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is related to the more familiar words <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bekhor<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 \u201cfirst born\u201d and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bikkurim<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 \u201cfirst fruits.\u201d What is the connection to young camels?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apparently, the original meaning of that root had a sense of \u201cbreaking forth\u201d, \u201cbeing first\u201d and \u201cbeing early.\u201d So these young camels were considered to be living at an earlier stage than their mature relatives.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bekher\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is rare in Biblical Hebrew, it has a cognate in a familiar English word. The Arabic word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bakr<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was borrowed into Portuguese and Spanish as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">albacora<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and somewhere along the way it began to refer to a large kind of tuna \u2013 which we know today as \u201calbacore.\u201d The connection between tuna and camels isn\u2019t clear. Some say it\u2019s because of the size. I wonder if maybe the large dorsal fin reminded them of the hump of a camel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this may not be the only connection between Isaiah and the fish.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In chapter 27, he prophesies about a battle where God will defeat various sea monsters:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that day the LORD will punish,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With His great, cruel, mighty sword<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leviathan the Elusive Serpent\u2014 Leviathan the Twisting Serpent;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will slay the Dragon of the sea. (Isaiah 27:1)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hebrew word for \u201cdragon\u201d is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tanin<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While in other biblical verses <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tanin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to other animals, such as a snake (Exodus 7:9) and crocodile (Ezekiel 29:3 \u2013 and this is the meaning in modern Hebrew), a common thread between them all seems to be that they live in the water. One theory says that the Greek word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thynnos<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> derived from the Hebrew <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tanin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and referred to a particular large fish. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thynnos<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> went on quite a linguistic journey \u2013 through Latin, Arabic, Spanish \u2013 and eventually - It was everywhere, shining out of everything and nothing. It seemed to emanate from the very stones of the buildings, from the dust on the roadway. But when I would try to look at it, it was as if it was coming out of everywhere <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the place where I was looking.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a distance, it seemed like there were many people on the way to the City. As we got closer, the real nature of the crowds became apparent: uncountable multitudes, from innumerable places, from all walks of life, all bringing gifts and sacrifices and riches. As I joined the throngs of people passing through the gates, I gazed backwards and saw nothing but people. The road was so full and busy, surely these gates would be open all day and night! The princely gate-wardens smiled at everyone as we passed through, directing us into the City with kindness and grace.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I proceeded down the road, my destination appeared over the roofs: the shining, glorious Sanctuary. If before the light was dazzling and brilliant, the light shining from the Sanctuary was even more glorious. Even from a distance, the gold and bronze and carved wood and stone astounded me, moved me almost to tears.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the light. I said it was even more glorious than before, but words cannot truly capture its majesty. The brilliantly lit City around me seemed to dim in comparison. There seemed to be no other light in the universe other than that emanating from the Sanctuary.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was able to tear my eyes away from the Sanctuary\u2019s beauty and glory for long enough to appreciate the inhabitants of the City, who lined the streets to welcome us to their City. Never have seen people so proud and gracious, righteous and humble. The light that shone out of the stones around them shone out of them too. It is clear to me that they are blessed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I understand now why this place is called the City of the Lord. It is not because of the Sanctuary, or the people, but because of the light the fills all of them. It calls to all of us, all human beings, as if it is saying \u201cArise, shine, for your light has dawned; The Presence of the Lord has shone upon you!\u201d. The darkness and foolishness of the past, the violence and \u201cwrack and ruin\u201d of yesteryear, all falls away in this light. In a line that echoes through our Friday night liturgy, embedded in the kabbalistic prayer <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lekha dodi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the prophet says, \u201cArise (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qumi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)! Shine (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ori<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)! For your light has set, but the presence of the Lord has shone upon you!\u201d One phrase in that line needs comment: the Hebrew <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ki ba orekh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As the twelfth-century Spanish polymath Abraham ibn Ezra argued, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ba<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typically means \u201centered,\u201d and when the subject is light, the light has \u201cset.\u201d He compares the expression <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ba ha-shemesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cthe sun set.\u201d While not all his colleagues were persuaded, this seems right to me. The prophet enjoins, \u201cGet up and shine again, although your own light has already set \u2013 for the presence of the Lord is shining on you!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of the world may be dark, but you are now a source of light. And as we know, even a little light can illuminate a lot of territory. Nations and kings will use you as a source of light, and people from all around will stream to you.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this sounds at all familiar, that\u2019s appropriate: the prophet here is clearly re-using the vision of Isaiah 2, where Jerusalem was to be a source of inspiration to people all around. There, too, people were to look from afar, and realize that something glorious was taking place. Note the use of the verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nhr<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cglow, gleam\u201d (nothing to do with <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nahar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rivers!) in both, as well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vision reaches its crescendo in the last verses. \u201cNo more shall your sun set (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yavo shimshekh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 using the same verb as in v. 1), and there shall be no more mourning. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. Our chapter begins: \u201cArise, Shine, for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord has shone upon you!\u201d (Isaiah 60:1).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Pesiqta de-Rav Kahana (Pisqa 21) preserves a \u201cliterary\u201d homily on this Haftara reading consisting of three proems, each of which concludes with a citation of the first verse of our Chapter: \u201cArise, Shine (<em>Qumi Ori<\/em>)\u201d, the \u201cbody\u201d of the sermon \u2013 a discussion on the opening verses of our Chapter -- and finally a \u201cMessianic Peroration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first proem begins with a different but related verse from Isaiah (24:15): \u201cTherefore, honor the Lord with lights.\u201d As a very brief opening comment on this verse, a question is asked in Hebrew: How do we honor Him? This question is answered briefly in Aramaic: With these lamps (be-ileyn panasaya)! I can envision the <em>darshan<\/em> (\u201cpreacher\u201d) pointing to the lamps illuminating the synagogue and saying to his congregation: It is with these very lights above us that we are indeed honoring God! This proem ends with a concluding citation of our verse. The Holy One, blessed be He, says to Israel: My Children! Since My light is your light and your light is My light, let us \u2013 both you and I -- go and give light to Zion \u2013 \u201cArise, Shine, for your light has come\u201d!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cbody\u201d of the sermon relates how in the future, Jerusalem will be a beacon of light for the nations of the world, who shall walk by its light. As it says: \u201cNations shall walk by your light\u201d (Isaiah 60:3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cbody\u201d of the sermon continues with another Rabbinic vision. In this world people walk by the light of the sun by day and by the light of the moon by night. But not so in the future, for it says: \u201cNo longer shall you need the sun for light by day, nor the shining of the moon, for radiance, by night\u201d (Isaiah 60:19). By whose light then shall we walk? By the light of the Holy One, blessed be He, as it is written: \u201cFor the Lord shall be your light everlasting\u201d (Isaiah 60:19).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sermon continues by relating how light went forth into this world. We are told that the Holy One, blessed be He, wrapped Himself in a radiant white robe (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itztalit<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levanah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the whole world glowed from the brilliance of its beauty.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our sermon concludes by noting that the Torah was initially offered to all the nations of the world at Mount Sinai out of darkness, as it says: \u201cBehold! Darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds the peoples\u201d (Isaiah 60:2). However, the next phrase, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ki ba\u2019 \u2018oreikh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (literally, for your light has come), is open to wider interpretation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra noted that the \u201ccoming\u201d of the sun customarily signifies its setting, and we can confirm that interpretation based on Gen. 28:11, which informs us that Jacob spent the night (at the site of his dream) \u201cbecause the sun had come\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ki ba\u2019 ha-shemesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Ibn Ezra thus explained our verse as \u201cThe light you had will be interrupted and the light of the Lord will shine on you; to wit, \u2018The light of the sun will no longer serve you by day\u2019 (v. 19), and the light refers to either monarchy or prophecy.\u201d Radak elaborated on Ibn Ezra\u2019s interpretation, and added that the light symbolizes the joy of their (eventual) deliverance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim*, however, saw it otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those exegetes who noted that Hebrew uses \u201cgoing out\u201d for shining and \u201ccoming in\u201d for setting, did not analyze it well. That is true only when it takes the perspective of the sun that is described, metaphorically, as leaving its place on the eastern horizon and headed to arrive at its destination on the western horizon\u2026 It is otherwise when addressing the light, which arrives at its destination whenever its rays reach something and illuminate it, which is when it \u201ccomes in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the symbolism, Malbim wrote that since distress is compared to darkness and obscurity, Isaiah was summoning the Jewish people to shake off their darkness and allow their inner light\u2014their spirituality, exemplified by prophecy\u2014to illuminate the world. This is consistent with his understanding\u2014as we noted in Chapter 53\u2014that anti-Semitism distorts Jews\u2019 self-image and makes them feel bleak and dark, but that deliverance from their oppressors will enable their true inner light to shine once again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*For the significance of Malbim\u2019s commentary to the Book of just like in this chapter. But in Isaiah 2 they are coming to learn how to walk in the path of God: \u201cAnd the many peoples shall go and say: \u2018Come, Let us go up to the Mount of the LORD, To the House of the God of Jacob; That He may instruct us in His ways, And that we may walk in His paths\u2019\u201d (2:3), whereas here they are bringing offerings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>There\u2019s room in the trunk<\/em>. The ingathering of the exiles promised in verse 9, includes all the possessions \u201cBehold, the coastlands await me, With ships of Tarshish in the lead, To bring your sons from afar, And their silver and gold as well.\u201d This is not at all obvious, given our knowledge and memories of return from various exiles, where everything was left behind.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Judah rules<\/em>! This is the picture we get from the chapter. It is the mirror image of the long-lived reality, where, even in the period of the return to Zion, Judah was paying a heavy tax, along with all the other nations of the region, to: Assyria, Babylonia, Persia...<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Upgrade<\/em>. In the urban renewal project of the city, Jerusalem will get an upgrade: \u201cInstead of copper I will bring gold, Instead of iron I will bring silver; Instead of wood, copper; And instead of stone, iron...\u201d (verse 17).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Hurry up and wait<\/em>. When will all this occur? When will the redemption come? The verse that closes the chapter has a puzzling answer: \u201cI the LORD will speed it in due time\u201d (verse 22). At its own pace - or asap?
