In<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.57.2?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, God promises that the righteous one \u201cshall come to peace. He shall have rest on their couches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.57.2?lang=bi&amp;p2=Ketubot.104a.6&amp;lang2=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talmud Bavli Ketubot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asks why Scripture here refers to \u201ctheir couches\u201d; it should say, \u201chis couch\u201d since the whole verse refers to the \u201crighteous one\u201d. This difficulty is resolved by Rabbi Yosi ben Shaul who explains that when a righteous individual departs from the world, the ministering angels inform God that a particular righteous individual is coming. So, the Holy One, Blessed be He, commands that the righteous ones should go forth to welcome him. They say to the newly deceased individual: \u201cHe shall come to peace\u201d and together with the rest of the righteous ones, he and they \u201cshall have rest on their couches.\u201d This midrash follows the death scene of Rabbi Yehudah Ha-Nasi. At the moment of his death, he raised his ten fingers toward Heaven and said in prayer, Master of the Universe, it is revealed and known before You that I toiled with my ten fingers in the Torah, and I have not derived any benefit from the world even with my small finger. May it be Your will that there be peace in my repose. A Divine Voice rang out<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.57.2?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cHe shall come to peace. He shall have rest on their couches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Scriptural expression \u201cHe shall have rest on their couches\u201d is echoed in<\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/search?q=el%20malei%20rachamim&amp;tab=sheet&amp;tvar=1&amp;tsort=relevance&amp;svar=1&amp;ssort=relevance\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Malei Rachamim<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cGod, Full of Mercy\u201d, the Jewish prayer for the deceased, recited at the graveside during the burial service and at memorial services during the year. This prayer, which includes the Hebrew name of the deceased person, concludes: \u201cThe Lord is his\/her heritage. And he\/she shall rest peacefully on his\/her couch. So let us say, Amen\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.57.2?lang=bi&amp;with=Devarim%20Rabbah&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end of Midrash Deuteronomy Rabbah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preserves a detailed description of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/search?q=Death%20of%20Moses&amp;tab=text&amp;tvar=1&amp;tsort=relevance&amp;svar=1&amp;ssort=relevance\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">death of Moses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At that time the Holy One, blessed be He, kissed Moses (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Deuteronomy.34.5?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0&amp;p2=Rashi_on_Deuteronomy.34.5.2&amp;lang2=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi to Deuteronomy 34:5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and wept,\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Deuteronomy.34.5?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0&amp;p2=Rashi_on_Deuteronomy.34.5.2&amp;lang2=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cWho will stand up for me against wrongdoers?\u201d The Holy Spirit<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Deuteronomy.34.10?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proclaimed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cNever again did there arise in Israel a prophet like Moses.\u201d The heavens wept<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Micah.7.2?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cThe faithful one has disappeared from the land\u2026\u201d and the earth\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Micah.7.2?lang=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201c\u2026and there is no upright one among humanity.\u201d Meanwhile, Joshua was searching for his teacher, Moses, and not finding him he<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.12.2?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cried out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cHelp, O Lord! For the faithful one is no more\u201d. All the while, the ministering angels were<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Deuteronomy.33.21?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cHe executed the Lord\u2019s righteousness\u2026\u201d, and Israel<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Deuteronomy.33.21?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201c\u2026and His laws for Israel\u2019. Finally, all present sang out together: \u201cHe shall come to peace. He shall have rest in their couches\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.57.2?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 57:2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). And so, we say, May the Memory of the Righteous be for a Blessing [<\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/search?q=%D7%96%D7%9B%D7%A8%20%D7%A6%D7%93%D7%99%D7%A7%20%D7%9C%D7%91%D7%A8%D7%9B%D7%94&amp;tab=text&amp;tvar=1&amp;tsort=relevance&amp;svar=1&amp;ssort=relevance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zekher tzadiq livrakhah<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] and may his soul have life in the World to Come! (verse 3)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind the door and doorpost you have directed your thoughts; abandoning Me, you have gone up on the couch you made so wide. You have made a covenant with them; you have loved bedding with them; you have chosen lust (verse 7).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two verses encapsulate a major theme of the chapter, but what exactly is that theme? It seems that these verses have two meanings. The literal meaning is that God is furious at the people for their immoral behavior.\u00a0 They have offspring from all types of forbidden marriages to sorceresses and adultery committed by men and women. The people are so consumed with immoral behavior that behind every door they hide forbidden relationships. God sees what is happening behind closed doors. These relationships consume the minds of the people. Isaiah describes a bed that the people widen in order to accommodate the number of inappropriate lovers. This evokes the midrash of Sodom where the city would have smaller beds to torture visitors by cutting off limbs. The Israelites do not reject visitors. They invite more inside than they should.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The metaphorical reading is that this chapter discusses the people cheating on God with other gods. The people are \u201coffspring\u201d of sorcerers because they go to the sorcerers as one would go to a parent. They are also offspring of adulterous Israelites who worship foreign gods. They increase their beds to include God and idols. This is similar to Elijah\u2019s rebuke of the people to stop standing on the fence between God and Baal. You cannot include both in your religious worship. You cannot have both in your bed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse seven\u2019s other metaphor of activity behind the door and doorpost evokes the future actions of the people under king Josiah. In a lamentation for Tisha Ba\u2019av (Kina number 11), Jeremiah laments the death of the righteous king Josiah. He talks about the king\u2019s efforts to rid the land of idols. Josiah believed he was successful, but the people deceived him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sin of the generation\u2019s scoffers clung to him, those who set up [the idols] behind the doors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The people would hide their idols behind closed doors to avoid detection by the king\u2019s messengers. As Huldah, the prophetess, said in God\u2019s name, to Josiah (II Kings 22:20): \u201cAssuredly, I will gather you to your fathers and you will be laid in your tomb in peace. Your eyes shall not see all the disaster which I will bring upon this place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earliest Rabbinic manifestation of such a concept is stated by God to Abraham, at a moment in Jewish history when the Jews were made up of individual family members, rather than an entire nation:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for you, you shall go to your ancestors in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age (Genesis 15:15).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the open, famished. And Esau said to Jacob, \u201cGive me some of that red stuff to gulp down, for I am famished\u201d... \u201d (Gen. 25:29-30)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi comments:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red lentils. On that day Abraham had died in order that he might not see his grandson Esau falling into degenerate ways. This would not have been the \u201cgood old age\u201d which God had promised him. Therefore, the Holy One, blessed be He, cut his life short by five years \u2014 for Isaac lived 180 years and he only one hundred and seventy five. Jacob was boiling lentils to provide the customary first meal (\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seudat HaVra\u2019a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d) for the immediate mourners\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, an argument to improve one\u2019s behavior can effect not only the self, but also the righteous of the He would impulsively jump, dance, and move differently from his peers throughout class. I thought he was being a nuisance. Initially, I did not recognize that I was creating an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obstacle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to his learning when I simply showed my frustration, lacking compassionate understanding.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is embarrassing to write as I too cannot control my body. I have Tourette\u2019s Syndrome, a neurological disorder which causes involuntary tics. Although mine are manageable now, they were an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obstacle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for my teachers as well when I was my student\u2019s age. Imagine the stumbling block created when tics or impulses are viewed as a disruptive call for attention.\u00a0 Imagine the frustration.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah commands (57:14): \u201cBuild up, build up<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><\/i><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highway<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, remove <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">michshol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, any obstacle, from before My people!\u201d In its only appearance in the Torah, the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">michshol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not connected to harming a person with a disability (Lev 19:14), thus how I read Isaiah\u2019s message. I\u2019ve learned that it can be difficult to <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build up that highway<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, without first understanding the individual\u2019s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obstacles<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I began dismantling my student\u2019s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">michshol<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following an eye-opening conversation with a mentor. Exodus describes the sacrificial altar as having steps (20:23) to which a concerned Rashi there responds that one should not build an altar without a ramp. My mentor helped me build that ramp. It was at that moment when the steps to the altar began to slope, as frustration turned into compassion. It was then when my student\u2019s learning dramatically improved as I began to better understand the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highway <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to his soul.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would bet that Rashi knew a person who could not ascend those steps. He saw them and dismantled a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">michshol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Torah text. Three arguments have been advanced against the possibility of repentance: [A] Since God is \u201chigh aloft,\u201d and since the importance of a sin is measured by the value of the one against whom it is committed, because God is infinitely \u201chigh aloft\u201d it stands to follow that the punishment of one who sins against him would be infinite and could not be atoned for by repentance. [B] Since He \u201cdwells forever\u201d and is unchangeable, how could His will be altered by an act of repentance? [C] Since His \u201cname is Holy,\u201d how could His holiness be reconciled with one who defiled himself and spurned His holiness? How could such a flaw ever be corrected? To these, God replies that although He is sublime, He abides the downtrodden\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim maintained that not only were these arguments unpersuasive but, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">au contraire<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they promote the possibility of repentance. If the first argument was that there can be no atonement for a sin committed against an infinite God, His very infinity expands the prospects for penitence, for otherwise no one could survive because no one is sinless.\u00a0 If the other arguments were that repentance is inimical to His unchanging and sacred nature, that only goes to prove how incapable we are of truly comprehending Him, so we There are only ten chapters to end his own book (or is there more than one author, Deutero-Isaiah after chapter thirty-nine, or even three different authors? who knows?).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah declares:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind the door and doorpost [<em>mezuzah<\/em>] you have directed your thoughts, abandoning Me you have gone up on the couch you made so wide. You have made a covenant with them (other gods), you have loved bedding with them, you have chosen lust\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Isaiah 57:8)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prophet learned from some Rabbi that it is time to check the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mezuzot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The inappropriate behavior of his people surely responds to some erased letter in the mezuzah, right? The prophet suspects that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>mezuzah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might have some mystical power. He decides to focus on the mezuzah as the scapegoat for all the calamities that the people were experiencing and by doing that he would solve the problem, the source of the reason for God\u2019s rejection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah might have been thinking of the idea of an \u201cinverted Marrano.\u201d How so? As the Marranos in the time of the inquisition exhibited Christian behavior on the outside but kept their Jewish identity inside, in the secrecy of their homes. This verse seems to invite the audience to the homes of the Jews during the prophet\u2019s time, exposing the inner abandonment of believing and following only God. Isaiah rightfully thought that God\u2019s people were falsely showing off their Jewish identity externally, posting a mezuzah at the entrance of their homes, but in reality, in their inner performance, inside their homes, there was a lack of Jewish identity. They followed pagan deities in their hearts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah was desperate to find the right \u201cprotective <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mezuzot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, the ones that would show the same proud Jew inside and out, the one that would preserve the love for God both personally and communal practice. The prophet is running out of time. He needs to buy lots of kosher <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mezuzot<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Isaiah visited the Judaica store on Geulah Street, but they have run out of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">klafim<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the parchment texts<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prophet needed to buy kosher parchments in bulk. How could he accomplish this task in such a short period of time?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He went online to scout Judaica stores, but they could not fulfill his order. Reluctantly, he decided to enrich Jeff Bezos, and signed up for Amazon Prime, allowing him to receive the package overnight without paying for shipping. He was please when Amazon announced the company will deliver in Israel. Just six hours later a UPS truck parked on his driveway and a woman dress up in a brown overall rung the bell. But all of them the wind shall bear off, a mere breath take them away. But who shelters in Me shall inherit the land and take hold of My holy mountain (.57:13).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is another ambiguous reference. \u201cThose gathered round\u201d could mean the gods that the paganizing Israelites have collected, or it could refer to the adherents of the pagan cult. In all this, the denunciation of paganism in the Judahite community is a very different theme from what one finds in Isaiah 40-55. The aim of this later prophet is to purge the community of its wayward elements. A sharp division in the Judahites community is envisioned: those who have exerted themselves to go after strange gods (verses 9-10) will be borne off by the wind, while those who have been steadfast in their loyalty to YHWH will \u201cinherit the land,\u201d which is to say, they will be the legitimate possessors of the Persian province of Yehud, now restored to the people of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 2: Prophets, W. With everyone, everywhere possible. That is the accusatory picture of the sin of idol worship that comes out of verses 3-9. This comes along with quite a bit of information about various practices associated with idolatry.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Gone with the wind<\/em>. The poet, Chaim Nachman Bialik, in his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.il\/books?id=gDG6K8lPphIC&amp;pg=PA33&amp;lpg=PA33&amp;dq=levadi+bialik&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=bLVlSxEj_f&amp;sig=ACfU3U2vHDNPfeZZE2fJlGI_t60MpPF20A&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj4jpPEwvzmAhUHJVAKHeFbAogQ6AEwBHoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=levadi%20bialik&amp;f=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">song \u201cAlone\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levadi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bemoans the fact that \u201cEveryone has been swept away by the wind, carried away by the light.\u201d This echoes verse 13 in this chapter. Is it the same wind? And what is the fate of the one who takes shelter under the wings of the Shechina in the poem, and how far is that from what the prophet describes? Bialik lovers and Isaiah lovers have a lot to talk about.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Peace to everyone - almost.<\/em> Verse 19 promises \u201cWell with the far and the near \u2014said the LORD.\u201d But verses 20-21 make that conditional: \u201cThere is no safety \u2014said my God\u2014 For the wicked.\u201d Just for the record -
