I have put My spirit upon him, He shall teach the true way to the nations (verse 1).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same question asked in 41 can be asked here as well: Who is the servant? Rashi believes that Israel is the subject of this chapter. He points to Israel as God\u2019s servant and chosen one, discussed later on:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the sake of My servant Jacob, Israel My chosen one, I call you by name, I hail you by title, though you have not known Me (45:4).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra shifts tactics and does not believe that this chapter is talking about Cyrus, as he did in chapter 41. Instead, Ibn Ezra believes this chapter is talking about Isaiah. He points to chapter 49 where Isaiah also refers to himself as God\u2019s servant:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And [God] has said: \u2018It is too little that you should be My servant In that I raise up the tribes of Jacob And restore the survivors of Israel: I will also make you a light of nations, That My salvation may reach the ends of the earth\u2019 (49:6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saadya Gaon, though, connects chapter 42 and 41 by placing the focus again on Cyrus as the chosen servant of God. Malbim looks to the future and explains that this verse is referring to the messiah. He is consistent in his opinion that both chapter 41 and 42 discuss the messiah. God selects the messiah to be his servant and imbues him with the powers needed to teach all the nations of the world about God and help usher in the final redemption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim and Saadya Gaon are consistent in their interpretations of the two chapters. Rashi\u2019s interpretation is chapter specific. In his view, in context, chapter 41\u2019s victor from the east referred to Abraham, but chapter 42\u2019s servant of God is Israel itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only one who seems inconsistent is Ibn Ezra. If he agrees with Saadya Gaon in chapter 41 that these chapters concern Cyrus, why does he shift to Isaiah in chapter 42? The answer may lie in verse 12:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GOD goes forth like a warrior, Whipping up rage like a fighter\u2014 Yelling, roaring aloud, Then charging upon the enemy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra explains that this verse discusses the victory over the Babylonians. This shows that Ibn Ezra is consistent in his opinion that these chapters discuss the later redemption at the hand of Cyrus. I created you, and appointed you A covenant people, <\/span>a light of nations <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(42:6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi questions who \u201cthe light\u201d and \u201cthe nations\u201d are referring to in this instance. Where popular thought revolves around the light being the Jewish people and the nations being the rest of the world, Rashi, among others, posits that God is referring to Isaiah\u2019s leadership of the twelve tribes, each considered a nation unto themselves. Regardless of who is enlightening who, the subject of enlightenment is agreed to be the universal belief in a singular God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Yaakov Bieler, in a 2015 blog post entitled \u201cThe Chosen People \u2013 Parsing a Morally Challenging Concept\u201d, references the distinction made by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks between Judaism as a particularistic religion, compared to most other universalistic ones. Judaism is not, nor has ever been, focused on missionary work outside of our own people. We know what our responsibilities are (613 in fact) and what the nations of the world are responsible for (the seven Noachide laws), and not only do we make no effort to bring other nations in line with us, we are obligated to discourage those seeking to convert. It\u2019s not so much a \u201cstay in your own lane\u201d mentality as a \u201cfulfill your own obligations before looking to take on someone else\u2019s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what do we make of this notion of a light unto the nations, whether it means Jews to the world or Isaiah to the Jews? Remember how King Solomon built the Holy temple with windows that were small on the inside and large on the outside (1 Kings 6:4)? Rashi named him as either Jacob or Israel, which usually is synonymous with the whole nation of Israel. R. Eliezer of Beaugency, a later French exegete, said it was the prophet himself, and Radak identified him with the messiah. Ibn Ezra provided a potpourri of interpretations, saying \u201cmost commentators said that [God\u2019s] servants are the righteous of Israel. Saadia Gaon said it was Cyrus (see 45:1), and in my opinion, it is the prophet speaking about himself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim\u2019s interpretation* combined elements of his predecessors:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, he began to explain who the person is about whom all the preceding chapter spoke\u2026 He is to be My servant, the King Messiah. The conditions of prophecy\u2014particularly if the prophet is to be suffused with it sufficiently to influence others and to be an instructor of many nations\u2014are two:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective preparation, that the prophet prepares himself by purifying and sanctifying himself through study, which was the way of the prophetic disciples. Of this it says \u201cthis is My servant\u201d who serves me faithfully, unlike other servants whose master cannot depend on them not to turn against him at some time. Rather \u201cI will uphold him\u201d to insure he does not renege on his loyalty.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural preparation, for which he is made ready from birth and conception. As explained in Part Two of the \u201cGuide,\u201d this means prenatal appreciation leading to his birth complete with everything required for the ethereal light to suffuse him, as in \u201cBefore you were formed in [your mother\u2019s] abdomen I knew you and before you left her womb I sanctified you\u201d (Jeremiah 1:5).<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his commentary on Jeremiah 1, Malbim added that these conditions are not absolute prerequisites and that God, at a critical moment, may yet appoint a prophet to deliver words of warning or rebuke who lacks one or the other, or even both. This simile marks the startling transition from God\u2019s silence and self-occultation to the moment when a new era is born, with birth pangs like a human birth. what does that mean?\u00a0","post_main_content_content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book of Isaiah\u2019s description of the Jewish people as a light unto the nations has become one of the most powerful and enduring metaphors used to depict the greater purpose of Jewish life. At its heart is the assertion that the covenant with God is not only for the sake of the Jewish people. Rather, God chose the Jewish people to be his vehicle for perfecting the world at large. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phenomenon is what Biblical scholar Jon Levenson calls \u201cThe Universal Horizon of Biblical Particularism.\u201d God is not only the God of the Jewish people but also the God of all humanity. Though the Jewish people may be God\u2019s chosen nation, their election is for the benefit of all.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> God makes a covenant with Abraham and his descendants but also declares that (Genesis 12:3) \u201call the families of the earth will be blessed through you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All that being said, what exactly does it mean to be a light to the nations? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the medieval Jewish philosopher Joseph Albo, light is a metaphor for the divine. Just as light appears to have no physical substance, yet still exists, so too the same is true for God. Furthermore, light is essential to all life and brings joy to the one who gazes upon it. In a similar fashion, all life finds its source in God, and we experience God\u2019s closeness as true happiness. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the book of Isaiah, light is a recurring symbol <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intended to convey faith and knowledge of God. To be a light to the nations means that the Jewish people are responsible for bringing the light of God to the world.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(42:7): \u2018Opening the eyes of the blind, Rescuing prisoners from confinement, From the dungeon those who sit in darkness.\u2019 Until the remainder of humanity comes to know God, it is as if they cannot see. There is light just beyond their reach, but they cannot apprehend it and live only in a world defined by its darkness. When the Jewish people shine with God\u2019s light, those who dwell in darkness cannot help but be drawn to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah is careful to point out that this light will not shine because of religious ritual or sacrificial worship but by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (42:1) \u2018bringing forth justice.\u2019\u2019 This in itself should not be surprising, for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abraham is initially chosen by God for a simple reason. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He (18:19) \u201cwill educate his children to keep the way of God to do justice and I created you, and appointed you A covenant people, <\/span><b>a light of nations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49:6 - \u201cFor He has said: \u2018It is too little that you should be My servant In that I raise up the tribes of Jacob And restore the survivors of Israel: I will also make you <\/span><b>a light of nations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, That My salvation may reach the ends of the earth.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60:3 - \u201cAnd <\/span><b>nations shall walk by your light<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kings, by your shining radiance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the theme of \u201clighting up the darkness,\u201d where the prophet metaphorically states that Jews are charged by God to achieve for others, is developed in 49:9, the image is far more fleshed out in chapters 42 (7, 16, 18-20) and 60 (1-2, 19-20.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until 42:8, it seems that the prophet is specifically requiring Israel to shine its \u201clight\u201d upon others in the world, who, because they have not \u201cseen\u201d the truth, are depicted as residing in figurative \u201cdarkness,\u201d bereft of clarity when it comes to moral and ethical issues.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, verses 19-20 suddenly appear to describe God\u2019s very own servants as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being \u201cblind\u201d and \u201cunseeing.\u201d If God\u2019s servants, typically Israel, cannot themselves \u201csee\u201d, how can they possibly show others how to \u201csee\u201d by shedding their \u201clight\u201d upon them?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps this is where 60:19-20 supplies an insight that clarifies the conundrum of these verses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60:19-20 - \u201cNo longer shall you need the sun For light by day, Nor the shining of the moon For radiance [by night]; <\/span><b>For the LORD shall be your light everlasting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Your God shall be your glory. Verses 6, 16, 18-20 call for taking a different perspective on reality. Between the lines, we understand how hard this is to put into practice.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Gentle, now.<\/em> The servant of God, in his activities for justice and righteousness in the world will treat the weak and disadvantaged with special consideration. \u201cHe shall not break even a bruised reed,\u201d which can\u2019t even stand on its own. \u201cOr snuff out even a dim wick,\u201d which barely burns. \u201cHe shall bring forth the true way\u201d (verse 3). The height of gentleness.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Light unto the nations<\/em> (verse 6). This is the source of the expectation that the Jewish people will be a light unto the nations. So we should take care to read the fine print and see what exactly is expected of us.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Like a prison<\/em>. Being alone in the darkness of a prison cell is the most depressing thing imaginable. Thus, \u201cRescuing prisoners from confinement, From the dungeon those who sit in darkness,\u201d is the height of redemption.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Like a birth.<\/em> Birth is an occasion of \u201cbreaking of vessels.\u201d The entire physical experience of the mother expresses this transformation. \u201cI have kept silent far too long, Kept still and restrained Myself\u201d -
