You have literally made the desert bloom.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Von Der Leyen was referring to the amazing advancements made in Israel in less than a century of existence. David ben Gurion was especially fond of the Negev desert. \u201cWisdom goes with South\u2026whoever seeks wisdom, south shall he go\u201d, a Ben Gurion quote opines, posted in Kibbutz Sde Boker in the Negev. The country took his message to heart. Innovative irrigation systems helped the arid south grow and other new technologies, like a solar tower and solar panel farm, help make this \u2018wasteland\u2019 useful for the whole country. The Negev is also an intellectual hub, hosting Ben Gurion University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Von Der Leyen\u2019s words are not new. The idea of the desert blooming comes from chapter 35: \u201cThe arid desert shall be glad, The wilderness shall rejoice and shall blossom like a rose.\u201d Isaiah refers to the destruction of the past that will turn Israel into an arid land in the future, which will start to bloom as the exiled people return to their homeland. Separating the saints from the sinners, the chosen from the rejected, this end time celebration will be the ultimate assertion of privilege.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve always wondered how a true saint could possibly participate in such a disgrace. How can you enjoy paradise knowing that others are suffering torment? That doesn\u2019t feel like a loving God to me, nor does it seem like a vision worth following.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Isaiah agrees. His beautiful inclusive vision of redemption includes us all. Indeed, he focuses not on the powerful, the rich, the favored. No, his prophetic vision of the endtime is one that includes the outcast, the wretched, and the weak:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthen weak hands and give support to failing knees. Say to the anxious of heart, \u2018Be strong and fear not! Behold your God! \u2026 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb shall shout aloud \u2026 they shall attain joy and gladness, while sorrow and sighing flee.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah knows that God\u2019s deep love and firm justice demands that everyone will participate in this gathering and celebration. Even those considered marginal \u2013 the weak and infirm, those with special needs \u2013 they will reclaim their rightful place at the heart of our communities and will rejoice along with the rest of us.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I read his words one step further: he doesn\u2019t say that the blind are no longer blind, that the deaf are no longer deaf. He says that we will find ways to open their eyes, give them access to sight. We will open their ears, making possible communication. The burden for this redemption lies on us all: can we be sufficiently creative and diligent to create ways for people with disabilities to connect despite the challenges. That means finding ways to communicate for people whose modes of communication may be more restricted. But we do not let that challenge be the final word. No, we lean in and create means for them to share their thoughts and feelings, however inaccessible they once were. We roll up our sleeves and invent means for them to perceive the beauty of what is all around them. Not their disabilities, but their abilities will define them \u2013 thanks to our commitment and God\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end of days, people of every ability will participate fully. No special need will become an insuperable barrier. And in that day, we will all be better because none of us will live with the specter of eventual marginality and isolation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in that day, we will attain joy and gladness, all of called<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thebulletin.org\/doomsday-clock\/current-time\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Doomsday Clock\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which tells how close we are to a human-made global catastrophe. The closer the \u201ctime\u201d is to midnight, the closer we are to \u201cdoomsday\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the scientists first set the clock, we were seven minutes from midnight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, at the end of 2019, it is 11:58. We are two minutes from midnight, a mere two notches away from an unprecedented cataclysm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clock has been set backwards and forwards 23 times in its 72 year history. Many of us have lived most of our lives within a few minutes of midnight; we have always walked with the burden of understanding that one or two moments, whether they are bad decisions on the part of policy makers, or failures to heed the warnings of climate scientists, are all that separate us from complete societal or environmental breakdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when we read this chapter of Isaiah, which describes a joyful, messianic time full of growth and healing, perhaps we cannot even imagine the lightness of spirit this chapter shows us. The desert suddenly in bloom? Abundant water bursting forth from parched land? People able to travel in peace and safety? The descriptions of physical healing are, for many in the disability community, a disturbing white-washing of physical diversity. In this context, however, we can read them as a desire for humanity to be free of the physical and emotional suffering that comes from living under great duress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As more countries experience catastrophic climate change, and as this change forces more people to seek safety and security in foreign lands, Isaiah\u2019s vision begins to feel absurd.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which is exactly why we need to read this chapter. The scientists of the Doomsday Clock recently labeled our time \u201cthe new abnormal\u201d, warning us not to get too comfortable with this existence on the precipice of disaster. We have been here so long that we might forget how close we are to losing the world as we know it. We must not get comfortable here, but rather set our sights far away from midnight, on a time when we can see a light on the horizon and feel hope and joy. But this is only the beginning, as Isaiah goes on to describe in great detail.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rabbinic sages saw Isaiah\u2019s prophecy as a vision of the future redemption. According to Midrash Tanhuma Devarim 1: <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the Holy One, blessed be He, reveals His Shekhinah to Israel, He does not appear to them all at once, because they would not be able to bear such bounty at one time and would perish from such an overwhelming experience. See what is written: \u2018Never had they heard or perceived; no eye had seen, O God, but You, who shows Himself for those who wait for Him\u2019 (Isaiah 64:3). So, the Holy One reveals Himself to Israel gradually. First, He causes the desert to be joyful, as it says: \u2018The desert and the parched land will be joyful.\u2019 And then \u2018the wilderness will rejoice and bloom like the lily\u2019 (Isaiah 35:1). After that \u2018Verily, it [the desert] will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.\u2019 After this \u2018The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon\u2019 (verse 2). And only then \u2018they [Israel] shall see the glory of the Lord, the splendor of our God\u2019\u201d (continuation of verse 2).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Talmud Bavli Yoma 39b, <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">...when King Solomon built the Temple, he planted in it all sorts of golden trees that brought forth fruit in their season. When the wind would blow through their branches, these fruits would drop, as it is said: \u2018Its fruits would rustle like Lebanon\u2019 (Psalms 72:16). This golden fruit would then provide a living for the priests. Alas, when the enemy entered the Sanctuary, these golden fruits dried up, as it is said: \u2018The blossoms of Lebanon wither\u2019 (Nahum 1:4). But, the Holy One, blessed be He, will restore them to us, as it is said: \u2018The desert and the parched land will be joyful; the wilderness will rejoice and bloom. The wilderness will rejoice and bloom like the lily. Verily, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it\u2019\u201d (Isaiah 35:1-2).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the hope of David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister of the newly established State of Israel, to \u201cmake the desert bloom\u201d. In 1953, he left office and moved to Kibbutz Sde Boker in the Negev with his wife Paula, to become members of this new collective settlement. He believed that such pioneering efforts fulfilled his Zionist vision to turn the desert into productive farm land. He concluded with, \u201cAnd the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come with shouting to Zion, crowned with joy everlasting. They shall attain joy and gladness, while sorrow and sighing flee\u201d (14). Once again, Malbim\u2019s* keen sense of language clarified a point otherwise obscured: from whom will sadness and sighing flee?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The medievals assumed that they would flee from the Israelites who would \u201ccome shouting to Zion.\u201d Malbim, however, who interpreted the chapter as referring to the final redemption, correctly assumed that one flees only if one is being chased. Since it is difficult to imagine that the Israelites were chasing after sadness and sighing, he wrote:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those whom the Lord will ransom from all their distress will return from their exile and go joyously to Zion\u2014unlike their return from the Babylonian exile to Zion, which was accompanied by sorrow and sighing because they experienced many setbacks as reported in Ezra and Nehemiah. This second time, however, eternal happiness will appear above them with no subsequent sorrow as there was during the Second Temple.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When they returned from Babylonia, they did not experience joy and exultation immediately and sadness and sighing departed from them only gradually, making room for the joy and exultation to follow\u2026 in this situation, it would be incorrect to say that sadness and sighing \u201cfled\u201d because one flees only from a pursuer and there was none in this case.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the final redemption, however, they will instantly acquire joy and exultation, leaving sadness and sighing to flee from the joy and exultation that were chasing them away. There is quite a plethora of verbs describing joy and gladness: \u201cThe arid desert shall be glad, The wilderness shall rejoice ...It shall blossom abundantly, exult and shout\u2026 And come with shouting to Zion, Crowned with joy everlasting. They shall attain joy and gladness\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Those who need strengthening<\/em>. You\u2019ll find them in verses 3-4: the tottering knees, the hands that are slack, and the anxious of heart. What will strengthen them? Not just promises of relief, but: \u201cSay to the anxious of heart, \u201cBe strong, fear not; Behold your God! Requital is coming, The recompense of God\u2014 He Himself is coming to give you triumph.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Seeing, and hearing<\/em>. That\u2019s redemption (verse 5). Because the destruction, it will be remembered, is about blindness, unwillingness to listen, and hard-heartedness.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Regards from the desert generation<\/em>. This isn\u2019t the first time that the way to the Land of Israel passes through the desert. But the differences are striking. There isn\u2019t really a desert. There\u2019s a clear holy path. And no sin.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Promo - or epilogue<\/em>? Is the prophecy in this chapter essentially a foreshadowing of the prophecies of consolation that we will meet beginning in 5 more chapters (40), or - is it more the epilogue of the prophecies of Isaiah that we have been reading for the past few weeks?
