He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. However, in post-Biblical Hebrew,<\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/search?q=Tzedakah&amp;tab=text&amp;tvar=1&amp;tsort=relevance&amp;svar=1&amp;ssort=relevance\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzedakah<\/span><\/a> <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comes to refer specifically to the \u201drighteousness\u201d of giving charity. For example: \u201c\u2026the work of righteousness (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzedakah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) shall be peace (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shalom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u201d ) (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.17?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 32:17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is paraphrased in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.17?lang=bi&amp;p2=Pirkei_Avot.2.7&amp;lang2=bi&amp;w2=all&amp;lang3=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mishnah Avot 2:7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cThe more charity (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzedakah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the more peace (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shalom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.17?lang=bi&amp;p2=Shulchan_Arukh%2C_Yoreh_De%27ah.247.2&amp;lang2=bi&amp;w2=all&amp;lang3=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shulhan Arukh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states that one is never impoverished by giving charity, nor is evil or harm ever caused by it, as it<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.17?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">written<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> , \"For the work of charity [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ma\u2019aseh ha-tzedakah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] shall be peace.\" This seems to be based on the earlier formulation of Maimonides in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.17?lang=bi&amp;p2=Mishneh_Torah%2C_Gifts_to_the_Poor.10.2&amp;lang2=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mishneh Torah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as elucidated by Rabbi Eliyahu Touger: A person will never become impoverished from giving charity. No harm r damage will ever be caused because of charity, \u201cFor the work of charity shall be peace\u201d -- On the contrary, giving charity leads to blessing, as it says in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Proverbs.28.27?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proverbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \"He who gives to the poor shall not be in want\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.17?lang=bi&amp;p2=Bava_Batra.9a.13&amp;lang2=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talmud Bavli Bava Batra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cites Rabbi Elazar as saying that one who causes others to perform<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a meritorious act is greater than one who performs that act himself, as Isaiah<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.17?lang=bi&amp;p2=Tractate_Kallah_Rabbati.2.13&amp;lang2=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cFor the causing of righteousness shall be peace, and the work of righteousness, quietness, and assurance forever.\u201d The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Tractate_Kallah_Rabbati?tab=contents\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-Talmudic tractate<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.17?lang=bi&amp;p2=Tractate_Kallah_Rabbati.2.13&amp;lang2=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kallah Rabbati<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> elaborates on this midrashic reading of the verse in Isaiah with the following story. Rabbi Tarfon, though very wealthy, did not give sufficient charity to the poor. Rabbi Akiba offered to purchase property for Rabbi Tarfon but instead distributed Rabbi Tarfon\u2019s money to the poor. When Rabbi Tarfon objected, Rabbi Akiba took him by the hand to the Study House. There they found a child holding the Book of Psalms and reciting the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.112.9?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cHe who gives freely to the poor; his charity (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzidkato<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) lasts forever\u201d\u2026Rabbi Tarfon declared that from Rabbi Akiba\u2019s giving Rabbi Tarfon\u2019s own funds to the poor, he has now learned an important principle. One who causes others to perform a meritorious act (Rabbi Akiba) is greater than one who performs that act himself (Rabbi Tarfon), as Isaiah<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.17?lang=bi&amp;p2=Tractate_Kallah_Rabbati.2.13&amp;lang2=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (quoted above).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.18?lang=bi&amp;p2=Sifrei_Zuta.6.27&amp;lang2=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sifre Zuta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Tannaitic Midrash on Numbers, the Omnipresent One rewards those who give <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tzedakah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with peace, as it says: \u201cFor the work of righteousness shall be peace\u201d. And similarly you find that the Holy One, blessed be He, will comfort Jerusalem with peace, as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.32.18?lang=bi&amp;p2=Sifrei_Zuta.6.27&amp;lang2=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah goes on to say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: It is also the companion to chapter 29. In that chapter, Isaiah told of a world turned upside down:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that day, the deaf shall hear even written words, and the eyes of the blind shall see even in darkness and obscurity (29:18);<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the confused shall acquire insight, and grumblers accept instruction (29:24).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter 32 incorporates very similar metaphors:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the eyes of those who have sight shall not be sealed, And the ears of those who have hearing shall listen, and the minds of the thoughtless shall attend and note, and the tongues of mumblers shall speak with fluent eloquence. No more shall a villain be called noble, Nor shall \u201cgentleman\u201d be said of a \u201cknave\u201d (verses 3-5).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In chapter 29, the individuals are handicapped by blindness and deafness. They refuse to see and hear the true path towards God. They refuse to acknowledge what is directly in front of them. Isaiah\u2019s message there was that even those that refuse to see God will be unable to hide from the truth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In chapter 32, the people are not willfully sequestering themselves from God. Instead, God promises that all of those that want to see God and hear God will not be shut off from doing so. We live in a time of such ready violence, unrestrained anger, endless conflict. Not only the resurgence of anti-Jewish bigotry (from left and from right) but hatreds old and new erupt on every continent and every region. No one is exempt from this torrent of vituperation and assault.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps one step back from this precipice of hate and destruction would be to recall what the goal truly is. Rather than confusing our preferred policies as the goal, can we agree that they are the means to the end? We may differ about the most effective ways to accomplish our goal, but the goal isn\u2019t one economic policy or another, one set of imposed treaties or another. The goal is summarized well by our beloved prophet, Isaiah:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the work of righteousness shall be peace,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the effect of righteousness, calm and confidence forever.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My people will dwell in peaceful homes,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In secure dwellings,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In tranquil places of rest.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of all our policies \u2013 the ones we advocate and the ones we oppose \u2013 is not the policy itself. The goal is calm, confidence, peace, security, tranquility.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we can refocus our attention on those shared goals, then our disagreements about how to get there become an opportunity to learn from each other and to attempt to find common ground. We still will have brute disagreements that will need to be voted up or down. We will still have criminals and terrorists who need to be confronted and contained. But for the vast preponderance of humanity, we could remember our shared commitment to these simple treasures: safety, confidence, security, and we could get back to the business of making sure they are available to all: not only our friends, but our enemies as well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because only when everyone has access to security \u2013 ample food, housing, health, meaningful work \u2013 only then is peace a possibility.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah is right: righteousness is the most prudent way to advance realistic goals.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it is the goals that will bring us all together, so we can shout about how best to attain Just last week Rabbi Ruttenberg<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheRaDR\/status\/1197851550959505415\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted Isaiah 32:6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> -- \u201cA fool speaks nonsense, And his heart inclines toward wickedness\u2026 to keep the hungry person unsatisfied And to withhold drink from the thirsty\u201d -- and inspired me to rethink Isaiah 32.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had initially chosen this chapter because it was in keeping with the theme of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/author\/41525\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this eight-part series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: feminine imagery in the Book of Isaiah. And there is, of course, a healthy dose of Isaiah\u2019s telltale patriarchal misogyny: <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rise up, you women who are at ease! Hear my voice! You careless daughters, give ear to my speech! For days beyond a year you will be troubled, you careless women; for the vintage will fail. The harvest won\u2019t come. Tremble, you women who are at ease! Be troubled, you careless ones! Strip yourselves, make yourselves naked, and put sackcloth on your waist. Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is what Rabbi Ya\u2019akov Trump (no relation)<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/trumprabbi\/yeshayahu-32\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deems Isaiah 32<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s \u201ccycle of destruction and growth\u201d in which Isaiah is threatening Jewish cities regarding their inevitable exile,\u00a0 calling them \u2018women\u2019 and \u2018daughters\u2019 to degrade them, because what could be more belittling, really, than calling someone a girl?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Isaiah\u2019s warning -- with its typically Isaian misogynistic metaphor -- arrives in the context of the promise of a great miracle, and it is that miracle I want to focus on today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A righteous king, Isaiah prophesies, will come to power, and he will bring about a just society by serving as a moral banner for the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Israelites whom Isaiah is addressing have already been governed by a king who served as a military -- but not a moral -- ruler, and the result was exile. What the people need now, Isaiah sees in a moment of true prophecy, is a different kind of leader, one who serves as a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moral<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> example, so that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">society<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might succeed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future Isaiah promises will succeed through justice and righteousness, through tzedakah:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then justice shall abide in the wilderness and righteousness shall dwell on the farm land. For the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness, calm and confidence forever.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA fool speaks nonsense,\u201d Rabbi Ruttenberg reminded us last week, \u201cand his heart inclines toward wickedness.\u201d What is this \u2018wickedness\u2019 of which Isaiah speaks?\u00a0 Failing to give food and drink to those who are hungry and thirsty; failing to care for those who have less than us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The people need a righteous moral leader, a compassionate leader who cares for others and inspires the masses to do the same. In turn, the people must partner with such a leader in this critical work. We get the point: recognize evil as evil. Call it out; don\u2019t hide from it, don\u2019t pretend you don\u2019t see it or don\u2019t realize what it is.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, the prophet continues:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the villain speaks villainy; his heart plots treachery, to flatter; he strays regarding the word of the Lord; to leave the hungry unsatisfied and deprive the thirsty of drink (verse 6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do these details add?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abarbanel sees in this verse the terrible consequences of remaining silent in the face of another\u2019s evil. \u201cIt is not to explain the dishonor of the villain or the knave\u201d \u2013 that, we probably already know \u2013 \u201cbut to describe the evil of \u2018flatterers,\u2019 when they say about a villain, \u2018noble\u2019\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is so evil about this sort of \u201cflattering\u201d support of the wicked?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor the villain speaks villainy; his heart plots treachery, to flatter\u201d: The flatterer is himself a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naval<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the Talmudic expression, his inside is not like his outside; he knows what kind of person he\u2019s flattering, but deliberately speaks the opposite of the thoughts in his heart.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe strays regarding the word of the Lord\u201d: Abarbanel reminds us that dishonesty \u2013 such as \u201cflattering\u201d a villain \u2013 is not only dishonest but violates a divine command; \u201cdistance yourself from a matter of falsehood\u201d (Exodus 23:7).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo leave the hungry unsatisfied and deprive the thirsty of drink\u201d: The Hebrew words translated above as \u201cnoble\u201d and \u201cgentleman\u201d carry more specific connotations of generosity. One who fawns over a miser, proclaiming him \u201cgenerous\u201d when he\u2019s not, contributes to his continued non-generosity \u2013 to the detriment of those he might have helped, who are instead left hungry and thirsty.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only will silence enable continued bad behavior, but it is a betrayal on multiple levels. One is \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naval<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, one with evil in his heart (see I Samuel 25 for a description of an individual whose name was \u201cNaval\u201d and behaved accordingly); the other \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chilai<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, a knave. Alongside these terms is what these individuals claim publicly to be: \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nediv<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (noble, generous of spirit), and \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sho\u2019a<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (a gentleman, influential person).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 6 describes the terrible things that the \u201c<em>naval<\/em>\u201d is really guilty of, i.e., 1) he speaks in an abominable manner; 2) he commits transgressions within his heart; 3) he engages in flattery; 4) he speaks against God errantly; 5) he empties the heart of the hungry (by promising to take care of them, but ends up not doing so); 6) and causes the thirsty not to be able to drink. It is the true \u201c<em>nediv<\/em>\u201d who does the opposite of all of these things (v. 8), and therefore, for the \u201c<em>naval<\/em>\u201d to claim that he is a \u201c<em>nediv<\/em>\u201d, is a travesty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the \u201c<em>chilai<\/em>\u201d is not as abject a sinner as the \u201c<em>naval<\/em>,\u201d nevertheless, the shortcomings associated with such an individual are listed by the prophet in v. 7, and they are also are reprehensible: 1) his instruments are \u201cevil\u201d (perhaps a reference to weights and measures that are dishonest); and 2) he devises plots to harm the poor with lying words in frivolous lawsuits.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud quotes King Yannai, hardly a righteous leader himself, as describing the essence of a \u201chypocrite\u201d:\u2026their deeds are the deeds of Zimri, but they expect a reward like Pinchas\u201d (Sota 22b, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see Numbers 25:1-15<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some individuals are quite aware of what they could be doing on behalf of others, but because they are\u00a0 so self-absorbed, and\/or believe that ignoring the needy is more personally profitable, easier, \u201cfun,\u201d etc., they prefer to \u201chave their cake and eat it too\u201d in the sense of covering up their corruption by claiming to be high-minded and sacrificial. Such individuals count on the belief that to engage in the type of muck-raking necessary to expose their immoral actions will be costly, difficult, challenging, and, therefore, highly unlikely. The type of government administration that Isaiah believed King Hezekiah would lead, apparently held out the promise that the hypocrites and posers would be exposed, and those hitherto exploited by them, protected.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time Isaiah recognized that his expectations in this regard were not going to be realized, he was highly disappointed, as are many social reformers whose dreams are frustrated.<\/span><\/p>","post_main_content_image":{"id":66575,"alt":"","title":"is32-wolf By setting the example of righteousness, goodness and kindness, a leader inspires his nation to follow suit and \u201cact as a shelter to his fellow man in times of trouble and need, and be a source of nourishment, refreshment, shade and protection during times of drought and exhaustion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is more of a personal musing than a biblical text analysis, but after I studied this chapter in which the Prophet addresses societal structure and how it is impacted by its leadership, I spent several days considering what this looks like today. And during those days, though I sadly didn\u2019t encounter many examples of how a society is uplifted by its leaders, I did encounter several examples of how society is lowered by poor leadership.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week alone, in my own backyard, Canada\u2019s Prime Minister broke with fifteen years of opposition to UN Israel-bashing, betraying this country\u2019s Jewish community. In the same week, students at a major Canadian university who wanted nothing more than to have kosher food options on campus were told no, that would be too pro-Israel. And at the very university at which I work, anti-Israel BDSers protested a pro-Israel event with shouts of \u201cviva intifada\u201d and physical violence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While one can\u2019t draw causal relationships from one event to another, or one individual to collective behavior, it is hard to deny that leadership, be it national, institutional, global, regional, religious or secular, sets a tone that will eventually be mirrored. And so, here we are, in a world of divisiveness, isolationism and anti-Semitism rising at a frightening pace, with what seems like a plethora of world leaders who are lowering their respective national consciences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are badly in need of leaders who, like Isaiah described, will nurture a better world than Leave it to Malbim* to find one. He took his cue from v.2: \u201cEvery one of them shall be like a refuge from gales, a shelter from rainstorms; like brooks of water in a desert, like the shade of a massive rock in a languishing land.\u201d His commentary:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By this means, Hezekiah, despite being a man created naturally from the four elements, could dominate all the four elements. He would be like a refuge from a tempestuous storm (the element of air) and a shelter from rainstorms (the element of water), like brooks of water in arid, desolate places in which water protects (against the element of fire). So, will he be a bulwark of shade of a massive rock in a parched land (representing the element of earth).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 4 led Malbim to consider yet another component of the physical universe: sensory perception. The verse reads: \u201cAnd the minds of the thoughtless shall attend and note, and the tongues of mumblers shall speak with fluent eloquence.\u201d Malbim observed:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Isaiah] added: Not only will they themselves understand, but \u201cthe tongue of mumblers shall speak with fluent eloquence\u201d to instruct others. Just as he said that [Hezekiah] would serve as a bulwark against the four elements, he now said that his senses of sight and hearing, speech and intellect would also improve.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the moral dimension makes its appearance in v. 6: \u201cFor the villain speaks villainy and plots treachery; to act impiously and to preach disloyalty against the LORD; to leave the hungry unsatisfied and deprive the thirsty of drink.\u201d Malbim first parsed villainy in two:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One who is wicked in action and conscience, who speaks evil even in public without shame, and makes peace with it in both his heart and conscience.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One whose wickedness covers the three items on which human perfection depend:<\/span>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beliefs<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">behavior towards God<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interpersonal relations<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo act impiously\u201d addresses the behavior towards God\u2026 \u201cto preach disloyalty against the Lord\u201d addresses beliefs, and \u201cto leave the hungry unsatisfied\u201d addresses interpersonal relations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The notion that every human being is a microcosmos (a miniature universe) was popular during the Renaissance and may have reached Malbim via his readings in 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century German philosophy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*For the significance of Malbim\u2019s commentary to the Book of There\u2019s a king in verse 1 - and he \u201cshall reign in righteousness\u201d together with ministers who \u201cshall govern with justice.\u201d 21 chapters ago, in Isaiah 11, we also met a king who reigned in righteousness. It\u2019s interesting to compare and contrast the abilities and the status of the two visions of kingship.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Listen and hear.<\/em> For Isaiah, seeing hearing and understanding are the keys to change. The worst thing that can happen to people is that they \u201cHear, indeed, but do not understand; See, indeed, but do not grasp\u201d (6:9). And so the best message is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThen the eyes of those who have sight shall not be sealed, And the ears of those who have hearing shall listen; And the minds of the thoughtless shall attend and note\u2026\u201d (verses 3-4).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>An end to hypocrisy<\/em>. In a world of truth there is no place for false flattery. And if you want to understand the difference between the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naval<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (villain) and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nadiv <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(noble one) - see the full description in verses 6-8.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Homage to Lemech<\/em>. The address to the \u201ccarefree women\u201d in verse 9, is reminiscent of the song of Lemech to his wifes, 362 chapters ago in Ge. 4:23 - \u201cAnd Lamech said to his wives, \u201cAdah and Zillah, hear my voice; O wives of Lamech, give ear to my speech.\u201d What\u2019s the connection between the two \u201csongs,\u201d besides them being addressed to women? There\u2019s a lot of fodder here for creative interpretation.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Tranquility, pro and con<\/em>. Security, complacency, rest and peace are key words in the prophecy. But tranquility in and of itself is not a value.
