What would such a practice symbolize? In the abstract, the same as in Radak’s metaphor: responsibility. Isaiah is not, of course, interested in giving us historical data for its own sake. Fortunately, there were two developments in the late eighth century that irked him, whose remnants are still visible to us today.

First, by the late 8th century BCE, Jerusalem had expanded well beyond its original Jebusite and Davidic borders. This created a dangerous situation, in which much of the population lived in a neighborhood outside the defensive walls of the city. And this was particularly dangerous in the eighth century, with the Assyrians a massive military threat. King Hezekiah therefore had to build a new city wall to encompass the larger city. He couldn’t, of course, encompass every house, and the path of the wall had to be determined by strategic considerations. Archaeologically, this is called the “Broad Wall” (because this is what Nehemiah apparently calls it; see Nehemiah 3:8), and it is easily visited in Jerusalem today. One can see rather easily that the construction of the wall cut through some homes, whose residents were presumably evicted on the grounds of eminent domain.

This is what bothered Isaiah, who blasts Hezekiah (22:10): “You counted the houses of Jerusalem, and tore them down to fortify the wall!” For Isaiah, this was blasphemous because – as we will continue to see in the coming chapters – Isaiah believed that no mundane defenses were needed if one relied on God. But we can certainly imagine Hezekiah responding patiently, “Yes, Isaiah, that is exactly what I did. It is what needed to be done.”

The second example gets more personal. Isaiah blasts “Shebna, who is in charge of the house,” with the following charge: “What do you have here? Who are you here, that you hewed out for yourself a tomb? He hews in the heavens his tomb, carves a sanctuary for himself in the rock!”

In the Palestinian village of Silwan, across the Kidron valley from the original city of Jerusalem, there are a number of Iron Age tombs that were dug into the face of the mountain. Each day, the people climb to the rooftops to survey the Assyrian approach (22:1). Food is scarce, and those who die, die from starvation and not war (22:2). To prepare for the siege, Hezekiah had fixed the breaches of the wall and had rerouted the water of the Gihon spring into the city (2 Chronicles chapter 32), but the prophet is critical of these improvements because the people handled the military preparations for the siege, but did not look to the role God ought to play in these difficult times (22:9-11).

Both of these improvements are attested to in the present-day archaeology of Jerusalem. The broad wall in the Jewish quarter and Hezekiah’s tunnel are testimonials to the herculean efforts undertaken in order to survive. Yet, for all their preparations, the people are pessimistic that they won’t survive. Instead, they party: “for tomorrow we die” (22:13) – they have lost all hope of being saved, so they may as well eat the food they have left in a last chance of happiness.

In response to the dire situation, Shebna – formerly a trusted adviser to the king – breaks ranks and contemplates a rebellion. Hezekiah had taken a firm stand against the Assyrians; Jerusalem would remain under siege until either God saved them or they were defeated. But the people considered surrender as another attractive option. Yes, Judah would lose their independence and the royal family might be killed – but at least the people would now survive as vassals of the Assyrians (22:15-16). The “exalted tomb” is a metaphor for his aspiration to become the next king and be buried in the kings’ graveyards.

Here, the prophet’s role is to reassure the people and caution them not to rebel, much as he had decades earlier in chapter 8. A surrender would mean the Temple’s destruction, the end of the Davidic line, exile and likely the end of the people of Israel. The prophet reassures the people – this rebellion will fail (22:17-25) and the God who is now hidden will soon save his people.

image: Brian Jackson / shutterstock

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_581985622.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":685,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/shutterstock_581985622.jpg","2048x2048-width":2048,"2048x2048-height":913
Rebel, Surrender -
