Chapter 24 has a beautiful staccato tone to its poetic verses. One thing that stands out in addition to the short simple phrasing is the number of repeated words.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

3- The earth shall be bare, bare; It shall be plundered, plundered<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>4- The earth is withered, sear; The world languishes, it is sear; The most exalted people of the earth languish<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>8- Stilled is the merriment of hand-drums, Ended the clamor of revelers, Stilled the merriment of lyres<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>16- I waste away! I waste away! Woe is me! The faithless have acted faithlessly; The faithless have broken faith!<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>17- Terror, and pit, and trap (<\/span>pachad, pachat, pach<\/span><\/em>)<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>18- Whoever flees at the report of the terror shall fall into the pit; And whoever climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the trap<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>19- The earth is breaking, breaking; The earth is crumbling, crumbling. The earth is tottering, tottering<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>21- In that day, GOD will punish the host of heaven in heaven and the kings of the earth on earth<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>22- They shall be gathered in a dungeon as captives are gathered (<\/span>v\u2019usfuh asayfah, asir<\/span><\/i>)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why have all of these repeated words and phrases? Perhaps this is another way that Isaiah emphasizes an additional theme of the chapter- empty drunkenness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

They drink their wine without song; Liquor tastes bitter to the drinker (9) <\/span>
\r\n<\/span>The earth is swaying like a drunkard; It is rocking to and fro like a hut (20).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These verse build on the verse from chapter 22:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Instead, there was rejoicing and merriment, Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, Eating of meat and drinking of wine: 'Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!'\u201d (22:13).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The people have become so pathetic that they have gone from drinking in spite of the pending doom, to drinking for no reason at all. They are so drunk that they sway about. Like a drunkard, they slur their words and repeat phrases over and over. With impaired minds to match their impaired speech the people have forgotten God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The world is in ruin. Any idea of country or state or people has collapsed. Men huddle in isolated enclaves fearful to reveal their hiding places. What has done this? The machines.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In the film <\/span>Terminator<\/span><\/em> (1984) the future of the world is a war between man and machine. Humanoid machines, called \u201cterminators\u201d hunt any remaining people after a world-wide apocalyptic war. The only possible salvation comes when John Connor is sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor whose son \u2013 who is not yet born - will begin a resistance to the machines.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In the sequel, <\/span>Terminator 2<\/span><\/i> (1991), Sarah carves the phrase, \u201cNo fate,\u201d onto a picnic table. John Connor informs her, \u201cThe whole thing goes: The future\u2019s not set. There\u2019s no fate but what we make for ourselves,\u201d a rallying cry against the impending and seemingly hopeless future.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Isaiah\u2019s prophecy regarding the impending doom to be inflicted upon the world is no less bleak. Yet, Isaiah suggests a way out \u2013 repent. Thus, I paraphrase John Connor\u2019s full quote in this illustration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Readers of 929 will have noticed by now that there were hundreds, if not thousands, of prophets roaming the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, but only a few dozen are remembered by name, and even fewer of them have attributed sayings that we still cite. What distinguishes the ones we are able to quote from the others whom we only glimpse fleetingly is that their words were still extraordinarily relevant after they spoke them. Predictions that came to pass, warnings that were right on the mark, insights that prevented calamity or enabled recovery \u2013 these are the distinguishing traits of the named prophets whose words continue to resonate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There are none greater than Isaiah, and none of his words are more prescient than the uncanny ways that this chapter speaks to a context that could not have been imagined in ancient Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On the level of peshat<\/em> (the contextual level) Isaiah is speaking of the intimate connection between the inhabitants of the land of Israel and the land itself. As the inhabitants harvest the consequences of their greed, short-sightedness, and brutality, the land itself grows incapable of sustaining life. It literally dries up in the implacable onslaught of their wrongdoing. What had been a paradise becomes a desolation. The first ears to hear these words had to reflect on the Exile and the ways that our ancestors distanced themselves from the land they had been promised.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But we now read those ancient words through the reality of our own times. In an age in which humanity has become the primary global influence on climate, on atmosphere, on sustainability, is it possible to read these words and not think about the precipitous ways we are hurling the planet earth into extreme fluctuations of wet and dry, hot and cold, melting the ice caps and drowning islands and coastlands in the rising seas? Is it possible not to stare in horror at the rapid extinction of rare and precious species, at the desertification of the forests that function as our planet\u2019s lungs?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cBehold, God is emptying the earth and destroying it \u2026 the earth will be utterly emptied and utterly despoiled. \u2026 The earth will become desolate and withered; the world will be wretched and withered \u2026 the land will be unfaithful because of its inhabitants, for they have transgressed teachings and violated laws; they have abrogated the everlasting covenant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our ancestors let greed drive them into exile from the land of Israel, despite Isaiah\u2019s keen warnings of the link between righteous living and dwelling in the land. We today are letting greed render our blue-green planet incapable of sustaining life, with no possibility of survival in exile for us or any living thing.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Malbim\u2019s* ability to parse the prophet\u2019s words in ways unanticipated by earlier exegetes yielded insightful results. For example, in v. 11, Isaiah described the pall of lamentation that would settle upon the people as follows: \u201cEven over wine, a cry (<\/span>tzevacha<\/span><\/em>) goes up in the streets: The sun has set on all joy (<\/span>simcha<\/span><\/em>), the gladness (<\/span>mesos<\/span><\/em>) of the earth is banished.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Before we get to Malbim\u2019s commentary, I would like to draw our attention to the singular language Isaiah used in this chapter. It is replete with sound-plays (<\/span>bokek-bolek<\/span><\/em>, v. 1; <\/span>avlah-navlah<\/span><\/em>, v. 4) and repetitions (<\/span>ka-am, ka-kohen, ka-eved<\/span><\/em>\u2026, v. 2; <\/span>hibok-tibok, hiboz-tiboz<\/span><\/em>, v. 4) designed to make the contents of his message all the more memorable. However, the price of being memorable is often incomprehensibility; Isaiah\u2019s prose is frequently obtuse, how much more so his lyrical poetry.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here is Malbim:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The deportees stand about in the streets, holding cups of wine, and shout bitterly. Just as they used to rejoice over wine, now, in mourning, they shout over wine. And this is what they shout.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cThe sun has set on all joy.\u201d Joy (<\/span>simcha<\/span><\/em>) is inner happiness, which is comparable to a light that illumines the soul. By means of the light of joy, they achieve gladness (<\/span>masos<\/span><\/em>), which is the expression of joy in eating, drinking, and dancing, etc.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Now, the light of joy has set and its illumination has darkened the horizon of the hearts thereby banishing rejoicing from the earth. No longer will the cheerful sounds of partying be heard across the land because all [its inhabitants] will be exiled. \u201cAnd what will be left in the city?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In chapter 15, we observed Malbim\u2019s \u201cmodern\u201d inclination towards providing a summary at the outset of the chapter. Here, we can add another \u201cmodern\u201d feature: his orientation towards contextual interpretation. Unlike his medieval predecessors, who commented on verses in isolation from one another, Malbim frequently combined adjacent verses in his commentary or, as he did here, inserted a piece of connective tissue at the end of one verse\u2019s commentary emphasizing its linkage to its successor: \u201cAnd what will be left in the city?\u201d The answer is in v. 12: \u201cDesolation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Some of the prophecies of Isaiah are not intended for the ears of the Israelites, but for other nations, such as the inhabitants of Egypt, Kedar, Moab, Seir, Tyre, Sidon, Damascus, Chaldea, Assyria, etc.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Isaiah's prophecy in our chapter is unique. It is not intended for the ears of a specific nation only, neither foreign nor Israelite. It is a worldwide prophecy which is intended for all the world's nations and inhabitants.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In our chapter, Isaiah foresees that The LORD will strip the earth bare, lay it waste, twist its surface, and scatter its inhabitants. The earth will be bare and plundered. The earth will be withered and sear. The most exalted people of the earth will languish. Terror, pit and trap will be everywhere, or \u2013 more accurately \u2013 almost everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cOn Mount Zion in Jerusalem, from where The Lord will reign, the Presence \u2013 instead of terror, pit and trap \u2013 will be revealed to The Lord's elders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Isaiah's prophecy in our chapter came true at least three times throughout history.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

First, in the days of Isaiah himself and King Hezekiah of Judea. In the 8th century BCE the great Assyrian Empire, who had stripped the earth bare and scattered its inhabitants, failed to conquer Jerusalem. In one night in front of walls of Jerusalem God killed 180,000 Assyrian soldiers and give King Hezekiah the ability to govern Judah peacefully from Zion.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Second, in the 20<\/span>th<\/span> century C.E. during the First World War. Then again the earth was filled with bloodshed, terror, pit and trap. Millions of its inhabitants were killed and scattered. But the city of Jerusalem fell into the hands of the British Empire with no bloodshed. Sir Herbert Samuel, appointed to the position of High Commissioner for Palestine, became the first Jew to govern the historic Land of Israel in 2000 years, from 1920 until 1925. High Commissioner Samuel stepped on Mount Zion, was called to the Torah at the Hurva synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem, and enabled the scattered Jewish nation to come back from the diaspora to its historic homeland. What a pity so few did.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Third, again in the 20th century, during the Second World War, in which hundreds of millions were killed, languished and scattered, the Jewish people in the diaspora faced genocide and holocaust. Many cities were bombed and destroyed, and terror, pit and trap were almost everywhere. But Jerusalem again was saved from the horrors of war. Instead \"the elders in Zion\" soon became the first Jews in 2000 years to govern independently the Land of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

While the Hebrew Bible is not mythological in the usual sense, there are passages that ring familiar from myths elsewhere. A few of them are found in the section of Isaiah, chapters 24 through 27, called by modern scholars \u201cthe Isaiah Apocalypse.\u201d Our chapter contains the idea that God will fight against, and defeat, other heavenly creatures (24:21-23):<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In that day, the Lord will punish the host of heaven in heaven and the kings of the earth on earth. They shall be gathered in a dungeon as captives are gathered, and locked up in a prison. But after many days they shall be remembered. Then the moon shall be ashamed and the sun shall be abashed. For the Lord of Hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and His glory will be revealed to His elders.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The existence of a \u201chost of Heaven\u201d is not unique to here: we often sing, \u201cGive praise to the Lord \/ give praise, O divine beings (<\/span>bene elim<\/span><\/em>),\u201d and the rhetorical question, \u201cWho is like you among the divine beings?\u201d would lose much of its force if there were in fact no such beings. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

But the idea that God would demote them, punishing them in a dungeon and then shaming them, is not all that common. It is found in a Psalm (the \u201csong for Tuesday,\u201d Psalm 82), where God says, \u201cI had taken you for divine beings, sons of the Most High, all of you; but you shall die as men do, fall like any prince.\u201d The conclusion there would be appropriate here, as well:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Arise, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are Your possession!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

24:10 \u201cThe futile city has been broken, every house is closed to entrance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The qualifier of \u201ccity\u201d here, <\/span>tohu<\/span><\/em>, can mean \u201cchaos,\u201d but its meaning extends to formlessness, pointlessness, futility; and something like \u201cfutile city\u201d seems the most likely sense. Attempts to identify this place with a particular historical city have themselves proven futile, and it may be rather a paradigmatic or symbolic city where the earth\u2019s dwellers are engulfed by the catastrophe their actions have brought upon them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  2. Terror, pit, trap<\/em> (<\/span>pachad, pachat, pach)<\/span><\/i>. Among all the word- and sound-play that is part of this chapter, you\u2019ll find in verses 17-18, the closed circle of fate: \u201cTerror, and pit, and trap Upon you who dwell on earth! He who flees at the report of the terror (<\/span>pachad<\/span><\/i>) Shall fall into the pit (<\/span>pachat<\/span><\/i>); And he who climbs out of the pit Shall be caught in the trap (<\/span>pach<\/span><\/i>).\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Continuous movement<\/em>. The prophecy is filled with verbs, that vividly portray the hubbub and confusion, but also contrast with the feeling of impotence, that there is nothing that can be done.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
