The city is doomed, but before the moment of defeat, God will intervene and save it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She shall be remembered of the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Hosts with roaring, and shaking, and deafening noise, storm, and tempest, and blaze of consuming fire\u201d (verse 6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This verse seems to reference - and contradict - the confrontation between God and Elijah back in I Kings:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a great and mighty wind, splitting mountains and shattering rocks by the power of G<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; but G<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not in the wind. After the wind\u2014an earthquake; but G<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake\u2014fire; but G<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not in the fire. And after the fire\u2014a soft murmuring sound (others: \u201cstill, small voice,\u201d I Kings 19:11-12).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God\u2019s message was that, there, God does not \u201creside\u201d in any of these bombastic things. Yet here God does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the answer lies with the theme of the chapter. The chapter begins with a prediction of Jerusalem\u2019s destruction at the hands of a strong enemy. Yet, suddenly, everything changes. It is as if reality itself is altered. The remaining verses all pick up on this theme of an altered reality with mind-bending metaphors.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like one who is hungry And dreams he is eating, But wakes to find himself empty; And like one who is thirsty And dreams he is drinking, But wakes to find himself faint and utterly parched\u2014 So shall be all the multitude of nations that war upon Mount Zion\u201d (verse 8).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Act stupid and be stupefied! Act blind and be blinded! (They are drunk, but not from wine, they stagger, but not from liquor)\u201d (verse 9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that all prophecy has been to you Like the words of a sealed document. If it is handed to one who can read and he is asked to read it, he will say, \u2018I can\u2019t, because it is sealed\u2019 and if the document is handed to one who cannot read and he is asked to read it, he will say, \u2018I can\u2019t read\u2019 (verse 11-12).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truly, I shall further baffle that people with bafflement upon bafflement; And the wisdom of its wise shall fail, and the prudence of its prudent shall vanish (verse 14).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How perverse of you! Should the potter be accounted as the clay?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should what is made say of its Maker, \u2018He did not make me,\u2019 And what is formed say of Him who formed it, \u2018He did not understand\u2019? (verse 19).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that day, the deaf shall hear even written words, and the eyes of the blind shall see even in darkness and obscurity\u201d (verse 18).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assyria was the strongest army in the Levant at the time and Jerusalem was a backwater of a city. The Assyrians had expelled the much stronger North. They should have easily defeated the South. This time, God would not reside in the still, small voice. Only a bombastic display by God could alter reality and bring victory to Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>image:\u00a0 courtesy of Ben I remember our teachers using it with passion, warning us not to do things thoughtlessly. I must admit that we didn\u2019t, and I don\u2019t know if even they knew where this idiom is from. How good was it to discover it in Isaiah\u2019s words!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this chapter, we find the prophet reproving the People of Israel, that because of\u00a0 \u201cthis\u201d, wisdom and understanding will be taken away from them (13-14): <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Lord said: Because that people has approached [Me] with its mouth, and honored Me with its lips, but has kept its heart far from Me, and its worship of Me has been A commandment of men, learned by rote. Truly, I shall further baffle that people\u2026 so the wisdom of its wise shall fail, and the insight of its insightful shall vanish.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do things by rote refers to acts done through habit, without thought or intent. The term \u201clearned\u201d repeats the words of the prophet in chapter 10:11. There, Malbim explains: <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">...some do the commandments only because that\u2019s what they have done through routine from a young age, without any thought and mindfulness, though knowing these are God\u2019s commandments, but not because God commanded them at all, only because this is what their parents and forefathers told them to do, and without rhyme or reason\u2026 this might lead them to deny that God gives human-beings any laws and commandments, and that it\u2019s possible to learn what their meaning and rightful essence might be\u201d <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we know that mitzvot need intention? After all, my intention when fulfilling most other laws is almost irrelevant: it doesn\u2019t matter what my \u201cintention\u201d is when I\u2019m driving or paying taxes or responding to an army order; it only matters that I do it. But the Torah introduces something new.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Book of Deuteronomy we find: \u201c\u2026 observe [these laws and rules] faithfully with all your heart and soul\u201d (26:16). Midrash Tanchuma says that the text emphasizes \u201cwith all your heart\u201d implying not to be of \u201ctwo hearts\u201d, or what we would call today, \u201ctwo-faced.\u201d And Abarbanel uses exactly our verse from Isaiah to explain: do not act in the way of \u201ca commandment of men, learned by rote\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, one can disconnect their actions from their intentions, i.e. \u201cbody\u201d from \u201cheart\u201d and soul. But the Torah doesn\u2019t want us to \u201cjust do it\u201d or \u201cjust feel\u201d. It wants both. This is a unique and forever challenging idea: we\u2019re made of both body and soul. How will those two interact? Contemporary educators, too, have a dislike for rote learning and prefer, instead, a pedagogy that allows and enables learners to construct their own meanings.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Malbim\u2019s* commentary on this verse addresses both the matter of habit as well as that of external actions vs. internal motivation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They [mistakenly] think that they are approaching God by arguing that the divine word surpasses human understanding. However, the truth is that this honors Me only in words but their hearts are distant from Me. They imagine that it is impossible for a human to comprehend God\u2019s commandments and doctrines, as though all that was required of Torah instruction was the commission of external deeds with no thought or mindfulness\u2014given that they maintain that [God\u2019s] wisdom transcends the capacity of His creatures and all His commandments are corporeal externalities bereft of intellect or reason.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, their worship of Me has been only artificial, rote, and habitual; i.e., they perform the commandments only because they have been so accustomed from childhood and lack all mindfulness and thought, albeit still recognizing that they are divine imperatives. However, they do not perform them because God so commanded but because they were so instructed by their parents and ancestors\u2014and this, too, is without appreciating the rationales behind the commandments but only on account of rote learning and habit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By means of such arguments, they become freethinkers and completely deny that God has even commended man with laws and statutes, let alone that He is capable of understanding their proper intentions and rationales.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, most medieval and early modern Jewish thinkers thought that habit-formation had its distinct advantages, an opinion shared by philosophers of educational who posit that habit becomes the fallback, or default, position whenever adolescents (or adults) are challenged to sustain their beliefs and practices on the basis of intellect Why does the prophet refer thus to Jerusalem, and why here? It\u2019s worth checking out the commentaries.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Dreams are one thing, reality another<\/em>. The nations who were besieging Jerusalem were quite convinced of their success, like a sweet dream in an untroubled sleep. But the awakening is bitter: \u201cLike one who is hungry And dreams he is eating, But wakes to find himself empty; And like one who is thirsty And dreams he is drinking, But wakes to find himself faint And utterly parched\u2014 So shall be all the multitude of nations That war upon Mount Zion\u201d (verse 8). If this reminds you of Sennecharib who was sure of his victory over Jerusalem, but withdrew without realizing it (701 BCE) - you\u2019re not alone.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Collegial attitude to other prophets.<\/em> From verses 9-12 we realize that there are other prophets around. They don\u2019t do good, but Isaiah doesn\u2019t blame them for falsehoods, or fight against them (as Jeremiah does, for instance) but sees God as responsible for their short-sightedness. By the way, their job according to these verse, is reminiscent of the mission given to Isaiah himself, 23 chapters ago: \u201cDull that people\u2019s mind, Stop its ears, And seal its eyes\u2014 Lest, seeing with its eyes And hearing with its ears, It also grasp with its mind...\u201d\u201d (6:10).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Doing it all by rote.<\/em> The prophet doesn\u2019t reprove the people for transgressing God\u2019s commandments, but critiques the way they fulfill them, and that their mouths and hearts are not in unison (verse13).
