Not so much that the people looked to Egypt, but that the people looked to anyone but God.

The chapter opens with a biting phrase, calling the people rebellious, using the same root as the infamous rebellious son from Deut. 21:18 (“wayward and defiant son”), whose punishment was death. The idea of executing a rebellious son was so extreme that the Talmud explains that there never actually was a rebellious son who was worthy of death. This added fact makes God’s accusation even more biting. The people are guilty of something so heinous that it never happened - until now. One of the accusations is that the people pervert prophecy:

Who said to the seers, ‘Do not see,’ To the prophets, ‘Do not prophesy truth to us; Speak to us falsehoods, Prophesy delusions’” (verse 10).

God’s standard rebuke concerning his prophets is that the people do not listen to them (cf. Accordingly [the prophet] said rhetorically that even the light of the moon, which was the start of the salvation that would follow after the distress and the dark night, would shine as brightly as the sun to the extent that they would immediately forget the distress and it would be as though there had been no night or distress at all.

Relief after adversity is a genre of medieval Jewish literature, its prime example being a composition by that name (hibbur yafeh me-hayeshu`a) by R. So considerable was this sin that God instructed Isaiah to record it for eternal posterity: “write it on a tablet and engrave it in a book forever to eternity (30:8).”

What exactly were they meant to do? God’s expectation of His people seems counterintuitive for the situation. They are on the brink of battle, the edge of destruction, and God seems to be telling them to do nothing: “You shall triumph by stillness and quiet; your victory will come through calm and trust (30:15).” We have learned time and again of the importance of pragmatic action. Jacob prepared for war with Esau; Nachson Ben Aminadav stepped into the Red Sea. Does anyone (in their right mind) believe that the modern State of Israel should not work with its neighbours to protect its welfare?

We understand from our Sages that the sin was not in seeking out military assistance or playing politic, but that those initiatives were to the exclusion of asking God for His assistance. It is through our trust in God that we will ultimately be victorious; otherwise we’re engaging in mere survival techniques. The nation, then and now, that looks for purely political and military solutions, not only illustrates their lack of faith in God, but sells themselves short.

The people’s response to Isaiah’s prophecies of destruction is to say, “Stop prophesying truth to us (at least they recognized it as truth), smooth-talk us (30:10).” In other words, “tell us only what we want to hear.“ The chapter concludes on a higher note of salvation, with the promise that one day “your ears shall be bent to hear from Me (a prophet will come and instruct you - Rashi) whether to go left or right” (10:21).

While we wait for that day, we have this recording of events to remind us of what that way will include: prepare for war, pray, and trust in God -
