My heart cries out for Moab\u2014 His fugitives flee down to Zoar, to Eglath-shelishiyah. For the ascent of Luhith they ascend with weeping; On the road to Horonaim they raise a cry of anguish (verse 5).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chapter 15 shifts from Babylon to Moab. Isaiah foretells the destruction of one of Israel\u2019s oldest foes. Verse five starts with an interesting note: \u201cMy heart cries out for Moab.\u201d\u00a0 Who is crying out here? Rashi explains that Isaiah is the one crying here. The note from the prophet is meant to distinguish between the prophets of the surrounding nations, most notably Balaam, and the Israelite prophets. Balaam relished the opportunity to curse the enemies of Amon and Moab, but Isaiah bemoans Moab\u2019s downfall. This interpretation plays nicely into a chapter that concerns Moab. What better way to stick it to Moab than to show how Israel\u2019s prophets outdo their prophets in compassion?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On the other hand, what would be the point of this message in a chapter about Moab\u2019s destruction? Radak may have had these concerns as he weaves this into the context of the verse. The people of Moab are the ones wailing here. They cry out for their soldiers and beg them not to go to war knowing destruction is near. While this may work thematically, the problem with Radak\u2019s interpretation is that the verse is phrased in the first person. The rest of the chapter is in third person. First person would seem to follow Rashi's interpretation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The answer to this may be in the verse before:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Heshbon and Elealeh cry out, Their voice carries to Jahaz. Therefore, the shock troops of Moab shout, his body is convulsed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If you read verse 5 as a continuation of this, then perhaps the first person subject is one of the troops with the convulsed body. He cries out to his fellow troops regarding Moab\u2019s destruction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Abraham Joshua Heschel can be considered a kind of prophet himself. The main job of the prophets of the Bible, after all, is to hold their people\u2019s feet to the fire. Moses railed at the weak and foolish Israelites who strayed from the path the minute their leader ascended to the mountaintop to commune with God. [Martin Luther] King fulminated against the war in Southeast Asia as well as against the injustices rampant in white American culture toward those whom it had enslaved for hundreds of years. Heschel supported both these causes, incurring the disapproval of some Jewish leaders when he did not hesitate to vigorously excoriate U.S. involvement in Vietnam, preaching widely on the subject, writing letters to presidents, and being a spokesman for other religious leaders in meetings with high-level military strategists like Secretary of State Dean Rusk.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2026Heschel, like King, had the charisma a prophet needs. He was impossible to dismiss, even when his message stung. The consummate gadfly, he shined a bright light on the ills of American society and also on those of American Judaism in the mid-20th century, which he saw as stultifying, airless, soulless, moribund. He was an outlier on one crisis we face today: how to make Judaism not only appealing but actually indispensable for Jews of future generations. His words were bracing and his exhortations powerful, but, rendered in such breathtakingly poetic language (as well as expressed verbally in his disarming Polish accent), they seem like a loving gift from a benevolent elder, not a rebuke: He even <\/span>warned<\/span><\/em> warmly. He was a Jew who had suffered and seen too much suffering, and who, unlike the rest of us, was capable of vision on a greater scale, the prophetic scale. He knew what he was talking about, and, like King, he believed people could rise up, be their best selves, and behave with righteousness and even with holiness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The prophet faces a coalition of callousness and established authority and undertakes to stop a mighty stream with mere words. The purpose of prophecy is to conquer callousness, to change the inner person as well as to revolutionize history. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

M<\/span>orally speaking, there is no limit to the concern one must feel for the suffering of human beings, that indifference to evil is worse than evil itself, that in a free society, some are guilty, but all are responsible.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Our chapter details the prophetic devastation of Israel\u2019s long lost cousin-the Moabites. Its cities will be destroyed, its vegetation will vanish, and its citizens' blood will flow like a river.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This \u201cMasah\u201d this oracle, and burden (masah<\/em> can be translated both ways) contains one stunning phrase \u201cmy heart cries out to Moab.\u201d It is stunning because, by Isaiah\u2019s time, Moab was not a long lost cousin, but a fierce enemy. From the days of Eglon and Ehud in the book of Judges, continuing through the lifetimes of Saul, David, and king Omri, Israel and Moab battled for land, wealth and supremacy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet, rather than celebrate Moab\u2019s annihilation, Isaiah cries out. He expresses himself emotionally, lest one believe that his tears fell from fears that the conquerors of Moab would then set their sights upon Israel. These are not self-serving words of a terrified man because violence begets violence, but an emotional outpouring over the destruction of a nation: both its culture, and its people.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Fast forward to today: For nearly a decade Syria has been a place of horrific unrest. According to reports nearly half the population has been displaced due to fighting, with nearly a third of the populace fleeing to neighboring countries. Blood is certainly filling the Tigris, with death toll estimates as high as 500,000.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The recent history between Israel and Syria is certainly not one of collegiality. From the anti-Jewish riots in Aleppo in 1947 through the bloody wars that continue to the present day, all peace efforts have failed. Nevertheless Isaiah instructs us that our enemies\u2019 suffering is not our victory, but a burden that should elicit our sympathy and tears.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet another \u201cmodern\u201d feature of Malbim\u2019s* commentary is his occasional summation of a chapter right in his opening remarks. Here, in our chapter, is an example:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this vision, [Isaiah] addresses the fall of Moab and the weakness of its defenders. [He describes it] as though it was after two of its large cities, Ar and Kir, which stood on the border, were taken and they still were unaware [of danger] and only after Nebo and Medeba\u2014which stood in the center of the country\u2014were taken that they realized and fretted over it. And yet, [their reaction] was not to do battle but to weep, like women who are unable to go to war. Only after the enemy had conquered a large portion of their territory and destroyed Heshbon and Elaleh\u2014the pride of Moab\u2014did their brave men awaken to do battle. However, it was for naught because their strength was already dissipated.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The final verse of this prophecy offers another opportunity to view Malbim\u2019s specialty:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

For the waters of <\/span>Dimon<\/span><\/i> are full of blood (<\/span>dam<\/span><\/i>); for I will bring yet more upon Dimon, a lion upon him that escapeth of Moab, and upon the remnant of the land. (9)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Whereas Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and Radak interpreted the lion as a symbol of Nebuchadnezzar,\u00a0 Malbim takes it literally and weaves it seamlessly into his commentary.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The waters of Dimon, which was distant from Moab, filled with the blood of Moabite casualties and God [pledged] to add yet additional siege-camps about Dimon to fight the refugees who would flee from their enemies and hide in the forests. God will set upon them lions and [other] wild animals to slay them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When it comes to the rest of Moab, the few that will remain hidden in the territory, God will bring the land itself upon them, since the desolate Land of Moab will slay its inhabitants through famine and pestilence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A note of my own: While this is the only reference to Dimon in the Bible, there are numerous references to a Moabite city named Dibon. Given that the consonants m and b (called \u201clabial\u201d because they are formed with the lips) are often interchangeable, I suggest that the prophet, exercising poetic license, called it Dimon in order to create the word play with <\/span>dam<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

15:9 \u201cFor Dimon\u2019s waters are full of blood, yes, I will add still more against Dimon: for Moab\u2019s survivors, a lion, for the remnant of the land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Hebrew of this verset as well as its connection with the second verse is obscure. Here is a literal rendering: Yes, I will set against [or upon] Dimon and its things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

[JPS has: \u201cAh, the waters of Dimon are full of blood For I pour added [water] on Dimon; I drench it\u2014for Moab\u2019s refugees\u2014 With soil for its remnant.\u201d - ed. note].<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Numerous emendations have been proposed here, especially for the last word, none very convincing. The language is certainly cryptic but may make sense as it stands in the received text. We know from multiple biblical sources that lions proliferated in this region in the ancient period and were a menace to people and their flocks. What the writer may have had in mind is that when the desperate Moabites sought refuge they encountered lions and became their prey. In this understanding, the lions are what God \u201cadd[s] still more against Dimon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This chapter and the next one are the first of a series of <\/span>massa\u2019ot<\/span><\/i>, a word that normally means \u201cburdens.\u201d Here, each <\/span>massa<\/span><\/i> is a prophetic lament over another nation, beginning today with Moab. The picture of destruction that is painted in these chapters is merciless. The cities have fallen, the soldiers are despondent, the fugitives flea in tears and desperation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What is striking is the tone. There is no gloating here, no joy over the fall of a rival. The pathos of this original Moabite Trail of Tears evokes nothing but pain and sympathy in Isaiah. Sometimes, all the messenger can do is deliver his message and cry.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Not only because of the historical tension between the kingdoms, but also because of the very recent events (732-33 BCE) when Moab came into possession of Israelite territory that was conquered Assyria, and given to Moab after the exiling of their Israelite inhabitants. For those reasons, some commentators see the whole chapter as a sarcastic lampoon, and not a sympathetic lament.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
