Smack in the middle of the prophecies of dread, chapter 18 is quite mysterious. What is this chapter about? Ethiopia? The future battles of Gog and Magog? The exiles from the Northern Kingdom? For starters, the chapter does not begin with the familiar \u201c<\/span>masa<\/span><\/em>\u201d introduction of this section. Instead, it begins with the Hebrew word \u201c<\/span>hoy<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/i>\u201d Some commentators explain this word as a synonym of <\/span>masa<\/span><\/i>, meaning a negative expletive, similar to the word \u201cwoe\u201d. Others translate it as a more positive call-out, similar to the word \u201chey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The second verse encapsulates the various ways that the commentators and other texts translate this section. Soncino translates it as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

That sends ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of papyrus on the water To a nation tall and of glossy skin, from a people terrible from their beginning onward A nation that is sturdy and treadeth down whose land is divided by waters.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Soncino reads this chapter as about Ethiopian ambassadors coming to Jerusalem to seek assistance against the Assyrians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Artscroll translates it as:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Go, fleet messengers, to a nation that is dragged and plucked to the people that inspired awe from the day it came into being and onward, the nation that is detested and trampled whose land was ravished by kings.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Artscroll translation closely mirror\u2019s Rashi\u2019s reading that this chapter is talking about messengers being sent to Israel in the future to see what happened to the Israelite nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The JPS translates it as:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Go, swift messengers, To a nation far and remote, To a people thrust forth and away \u2014 A nation of gibber and chatter \u2014 Whose land is cut off by streams; Which sends out envoys by sea, In papyrus vessels upon the water!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This translation seems to imply that the messengers are being sent from Isaiah to faraway nations, perhaps Ethiopia, or perhaps beyond Ethiopia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The New Oxford Annotated Bible has:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sending ambassadors by the Nile in vessels made of Papyrus on the waters! Go, you swift messengers to a nation tall and smooth, to a people feared near and far a nation mighty and conquering whose land the rivers divide.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This reading is a mix of JPS and Soncino. This reading has the messengers being sent to the outer lands to warn the gathering rebellion to wait for God\u2019s instructions. These four different readings of one verse of the chapter highlight the mysteriousness of this seemingly out-of-place chapter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Wangari Maathai was an eminent Kenyan social-environmental activist and teacher, and the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She spent a major part of her life fighting for social and environmental issues. She also became the first environmentalist and African woman to receive a Nobel Prize. In the 1970s she founded the \u2018Green Belt Movement\u2019 that was aimed at planting trees in order to protect the environment and the livelihoods of indigenous women. This movement not only planted over 47 million trees worldwide, including re-foresting her native Kenya, but has bettered the lives of over 900,000 women through economic empowerment. \u201cMama Trees,\u201d as she was affectionately known, spoke from experience when she said: \u201cEvery person who has ever achieved anything has been knocked down many times. But all of them picked themselves up and kept going, and that is what I have always tried to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Labeled a \u201csubversive\u201d by Kenya\u2019s former president, Daniel Arap Moi, she was beaten unconscious and jailed when she fought against the government\u2019s plan to build a skyscraper in the middle of Uhuru Park, one of the last remaining public green spaces in Nairobi. Maathai\u2019s efforts prevailed, and she went on to become internationally recognized as a leader in environmental and human rights activism.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Human rights are not things that are put on the table for people to enjoy. These are things you fight for and then you protect.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We tend to put the environment last because we think the first thing we have to do is to eliminate poverty. But you can't reduce poverty in a vacuum. You are doing it in an environment.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Every one of us can make a contribution. And quite often we are looking for the big things and forget that, wherever we are, we can make a contribution. Sometimes I tell myself, I may only be planting a tree here, but just imagine what's happening if there are billions of people out there doing something. Just imagine the power of what we can do.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A tree has roots in the soil yet reaches to the sky. It tells us that in order to aspire we need to be grounded and that no matter how high we go it is from our roots that we draw sustenance. It is a reminder to all of us who have had success that we cannot forget where we came from. It signifies that no matter how powerful we become in government or how many awards we receive, our power and strength and our ability to reach our goals depend on the people, those whose work remain unseen, who are the soil out of which we grow, the shoulders on which we stand<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our chapter addresses \u201ca land of shadowy (alt: buzzing) wings beyond the rivers of Kush\u201d (1). While most English translations (e.g., JPS, King James) render Kush as Ethiopia (or Nubia), that was not the consensus of the traditional exegetes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashi stated that \u201cit is situated in the east.\u201d Ibn Ezra\u2014followed by Malbim\u2014identified it explicitly with Assyria, and others (Radak, Ibn Kaspi), while offering no specific geographic designation, took it\u2014along with the following verse\u2014as indicating a country with a network of rivers traversed by sailboats\u2014a description more likely for Assyria than Ethiopia.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indeed, if Kush sounds familiar, it is probably because the opening verse of the Book of Esther demarcates the empire of King Ahasuerus as extending from Hodu (India) to Kush. Since he ruled from Susa, Persia, over 127 provinces, it would be reasonable to assume that the farther reaches of his kingdom were in Africa. However, Gen. 2:13 names Kush as the location of the River Gihon\u2014one of the rivers (along with the Tigris and Euphrates) of what appears to be a Mesopotamian Garden of Eden.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This uncertainty regarding the exact location of Kush may very well be behind the following difference of opinion recorded in the Talmud:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cFrom Hodu to Kush.\u201d Rav and Samuel gave different interpretations of this. One said that Hodu is at one end of the world and Kush at the other, and the other said that Hodu and Kush adjoin one another, and that [the meaning is that] as he ruled over Hodu and Kush, so he ruled from one end of the world to the other. (BT Megillah 11a)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Either way, here is Malbim\u2019s* summary of the chapter, contained in his commentary to the last verse.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During the reign of Hezekiah, many of the ten [lost] tribes returned to Jerusalem in order to take shelter under his wings. The view of the Sages is that this prophecy is futuristic, and so it was interpreted by the exegetes. However, as much as I may diverge from their path in pursuit of <\/span>peshat<\/span><\/i>, I have already noted in chapter 11 that the futuristic prophecies began during the time of Hezekiah\u2014as the prophet himself acknowledged at the opening of chapter 48.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

While scholars (and adventurers) have scoured the earth in search of the actual ten lost tribes\u2014one theory even identified them with the American Indians\u2014Malbim saw them also as a symbol for the reunification of one Jewish nation under God, indivisible.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

18:2 \u201cGo, swift messengers, to a rangy and smooth-faced nation, to a fearsome people from beyond, a gibberish nation and sowing defeat, whose land is cut through with rivers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The messengers (<\/span>mal\u2019akhim<\/span><\/em>) are evidently a different group from the envoys (<\/span>tsirim<\/span><\/em>) of the preceding line. It is not clear where the Nubian envoys are heading, and different attempts have been made to line up this passage with a particular moment in the political history of the late eighth century B.C.E. The swift messengers appear to be sent out from the kingdom of Judah to announce to the Nubians the disaster about to overtake them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Hebrew word translated as \u201crangy\u201d is literally \u201cpulled out\u201d or \u201c elongated,\u201d not the usual word for \u201ctall\u201d. The term represented as \u201csmooth-skinned\u201d derives from a verbal stem that means either \u201cpolished\u201d or \u201cplucked.\u201d This would be an exoticizing way to describe the tall Africans with little body hair, even though their blackness is unmentioned.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Hebrew says \u201ca <\/span>qaw-qaw<\/span><\/em> nation,\u201d this being an onomatopoeia for unintelligible sounds, always a scary aspect of foreigners.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Hebrew says merely \u201cand defeat,\u201d but something like \u201csowing\u201d or \u201cinflicting\u201d seems to be implied. This is in other words, a powerful nation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Many riddles<\/em>. This prophecy is quite opaque: What country are we talking about? (See Moshe Sokolow\u2019s post that addresses that question). Who are the messengers? Who is the enemy? When was all this happening, or supposed to happen - in those days, in the distant future? The only clear anchors in the text are God and Jerusalem. The rest if fertile ground for interpretations.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. A two-way street<\/em>. In verse 2, swift messengers leave for the nation that lives in a distant land. In verse 7, gifts (tribute) arrive from there in return.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. \u05d2\u05d5\u05d9 \u05de\u05de\u05d5\u05e9\u05da \u05d5\u05de\u05d5\u05e8\u05d8, <\/span>goy memushach umorat<\/span><\/i> - The far-away people is described thus, but what does it mean? The JPS translation here has: \u201ca nation far and remote.\u201d Alter translates: \u201ca rangy and smooth-faced nation.\u201d So it geography, or physiognomy, or something else?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. The mountain of God in Jerusalem<\/em>. If Mt.
