Or does he?\r\n\r\n","post_main_content_content":" During Isaiah\u2019s discussion with King Ahaz regarding<\/span> how he should not fear the \u201csaber-rattling\u201d that was being engaged in by his two antagonists, the king of Aram and the King of Israel, the prophet proposed that Ahaz should request some sort of Divine omen indicating that all will be well. The Judean King responds ostensibly in a very pious manner: \u201cI will not ask, and I will not test the LORD (verse 12).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Not subjecting God to demonstrating how reliable His word is would be in accordance with statements earlier in the Torah (Deut 6:16, \u201cDo not try your God\u2026\u201d). But a close-reading of Ahaz\u2019s words according to Malbim gave Isaiah cause to suspect that what the King had in mind was otherwise:<\/span><\/p>\r\n If his intention was: I will not ask because I believe without any sign or wonder, he should have said (<\/span>the reverse order<\/span><\/i>): \u201cI will not test Him, and I will not ask,\u201d i.e., I will not test Him for my needs, because He has already proven Himself to me, and I therefore have no doubts; and I also will not ask on behalf of others, since the word of God is believed by all.\u00a0 Therefore, despite Ahaz\u2019 protestations, Isaiah declares a \u201csign\u201d that God will send, in order to demonstrate divine support of the Jewish people. This particular \u201cwonder\u201d will include:<\/span><\/p>\r\n However, one has to wonder about the efficacy of all aspects of a \u201csign,\u201d even if presented by a credible prophet such as Isaiah. When the Torah discusses the predictions of false prophets in Deut. 18:22, Rashbam comments:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n This is assuming that repentance and good deeds causing God to \u201cchange His mind\u201d because of them (<\/span>do not occur<\/span><\/em>.) Behold Hezekiah\u2019s prayer benefited him (<\/span>see Is. 38:2<\/span>); and (<\/span>the residents of<\/span><\/em>) Ninveh repented from their evil ways (<\/span>see Jonah 3:10<\/span>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n While (a) above may not be affected by repentance and good deeds, (b), (c), and (d) certainly could be. Some of these images have both contemporary and historical reference points. Verses 18-20 describe the armies of Assyria and Egypt advancing on the country like swarms of bees and flies that then settle in clefts of rocks. Anyone who has been outside in the summertime around food knows how quickly flies or bees can appear and seem to encompass everything. The fact that the flies are used to describe the Egyptian army may also be a double reference to the fourth Passover plague of <\/span>\u2018arov<\/span><\/i>, which some commentators explain was swarms of flies instead of wild animals. This may mean that Egypt was known for large swarms of flies. For an agrarian people out in the fields most of the day, these would be stark images.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Next the prophet describes the defeat of the Assyrians by explaining that God will shave their beards and legs. Long-locked beards are a staple image in Assyrian iconography. Cutting off their beards is tantamount to humiliation and defeat. This also recalls the story in II Samuel 10 when David sends messengers to Ammon and the king of Ammon shaves off their beards and tears their clothes in order to humiliate them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The end of the chapter is a little confusing. Are these positive images or are they negative?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n And in that day, each household shall save alive a heifer of the herd and two animals of the flock. And they shall obtain so much milk that they shall eat curds. Thus everyone who is left in the land shall feed on curds and honey (verses 21-22).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n If these are positive images, they describe a nation where everyone has enough to be self-sufficient. Each family will have a cow and sheep to provide sustenance. Furthermore, this one cow will provide so much milk that there will be enough to make curds. The verse ends with a play on the promise to Moses that the land of Israel will be a land flowing with milk and honey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n One the other hand, it could also mean that the people will be so poor that they can only afford one cow and two sheep. In a cruel twist, the cow will provide so much milk that the people will be sick of the one thing that they have to drink and instead will just eat the curds. This recalls the quail that God brought in such abundance that the people died eating it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The reference to the land of milk and honey is also twisted, because instead of milk and honey, the people are forced to eat a less desirable form of this food.
