God strips Judah of what amounts to the basic support system of a functioning society: in a first move, all supplies of food and water, all military, legal, administrative, religious, and spiritual leadership will disappear. In their place, boys will rule, further upending the order of society and leading to oppression. Women will govern, and their rule is seen as even more disconcerting. But at the same time, Isaiah notes that the just will do well, enjoying the fruit of their works (10). These apparent contrasts are typical for many passages in the book of Isaiah: God’s punishment, and the promise of salvation often follow each other. Judgement and redemption are closely linked, as is explained in the first chapter: “Zion shall be saved in her judgement” (1:27). One seems to necessitate the other.

A large part of this chapter is taken up by a long list of the gorgeous clothes and accessories worn by the “daughters of Zion.” We read about anklets, earrings, nose rings, turbans, amulets… It seems that Isaiah is not primarily offended by the opulent clothing items but rather by the attitude with which they are worn. God will mete out punishment because “the daughters of Zion are so vain and walk with heads thrown back, with roving eyes, and with mincing gait, making a tinkling with their feet” (16).

It is, of course, problematic that the offending behavior is marked on the bodies of women. Why focus on women’s clothes instead of, say, sumptuous swords with intricate hilts imported from abroad? And were men not guilty of overspending on clothes? In any case, the text makes it clear that haughtiness and arrogance are not the prerogative of ancient Israelite women alone. God’s punishment has nothing to do with fancy clothes. Rather, they are signs of impending judgment, signs of everything that will soon be lost in the Assyrian invasions that feature so prominently in the book of Isaiah. Judah’s men, Isaiah predicts, shall fall by the sword (25), and women shall lament and mourn (26).

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/is3-dresses.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1241,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/is3-dresses.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1551
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/is3-dresses.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1241,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/is3-dresses.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1551
Molly Morris holds a Masters degree in Leadership and Community Engagement. One can hardly imagine the pain with which Isaiah brings this information to his people, deserving though it may be. The Gemarah (Chagigah 14a) tells us he did not calm down until he said, ‘they will act arrogantly: the boy against his elder (3:5).”

Many interpret this prophecy of children disrespecting elders as the ultimate curse. According to his understanding, the calm that came over Isaiah with this proclamation was induced by the first glimmer of hope for redemption from this national tragedy. “The first sign of hope for the teshuvah (loosely translated as repentance, but so much more than that) of the Jewish nation was the rebellious attitude of the younger generation against their parents and elders,” says Rav Schwab. According to this interpretation Isaiah understood the power of youth – to question, to want a better world, to hold their preceding generation to account for the mess they are now in. And most importantly, to begin the cycle of teshuvah – returning to the life they were meant to have, the first step of which is rejection of the values and lifestyles that their elders had embraced.

My generation has driven an epic teshuvah movement – rejecting their parents drive to assimilation, examining their own place in the world and redefining their relationship with God.
