For a short chapter, chapter 4 is rich in imagery. The chapter opens with the harrowing image of seven women grasping at one man for marriage. So many men have died in battle or disease that there are not enough men for marriage. The number seven also evokes the seven days of creation and the chaos of the moment is the chaos that preceded creation. God then promises that on that day the fruit of the land will burst forth, the sun will shine, and the water will wash away the filth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These are also images that evoke the days of creation. Those in Jerusalem are to be inscribed for life like the life given to Adam and Eve and the life of the tree of life. The prophet then jumps to the image of the Exodus showing God\u2019s protection through the cloud during the day and the fire at night. The penultimate verse then jumps back to the theme of the first verse by promising that the clouds will create a canopy, using the same word as a wedding canopy. Perhaps then, the seven women clinging to one man is Israel begging God to wed them once again for protection. God answers that he will redo creation and the Exodus in order to wed his nation once again under the wedding canopy in I would definitely like to nominate my Rabbi, Rabbi Raysh Weiss, for this title, although she would typically dismiss any such accolade and mention someone who she thinks is much more worthy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rabbi Weiss and her husband Rabbi Jonah Rank were part of our small Jewish community in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for three years, along with their adorable daughters.\u00a0 In a place where Jewish food, culture and outreach is sparse, they made a huge difference to our Jewish lives and to the lives of many other people in our community.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rabbi Weiss in particular made it her mission to contact each and every member of our synagogue, to visit the sick (including my mother, who isn\u2019t even Jewish), to teach, to create and to generally demonstrate through all her actions what it means to be a Jewish leader in these times.\u00a0 After tragedies, she created vigils, reaching out to other faith communities and other Jewish leaders, allowing us all to gather and pray in a meaningful way as we collectively mourned for those killed for no other reason than the fact they were Jewish. For holidays, she created meaningful programming for all.\u00a0 For those seeking to learn more or to convert to Judaism, she welcomed them and helped them find their way forward. She demonstrates through her actions a way to live a moral life in very troubling and complex times.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Although the Rabbi and her family have returned to the US now, where another congregation will no doubt profit from her wisdom, we remember all that she taught us through her example, her inspiring sermons, and her regard for the divine spark in each person she encountered.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cIn that day, seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, \u2018We will eat our own food and wear our own clothes; Only let us be called by your name\u2014 Take away our disgrace!\u2019\u201d (Isaiah 4:1)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why are these independent women, with the means by which to provide their own food and clothing, so desperate to snag a husband, in name only?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Is this just a prophecy about the desperation of single womanhood?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On one level, the verse does reflect a social reality in which \u201cit is a disgrace for a woman, that she sits without a husband\u201d (Radak). More specifically, marriage serves a protective function. As Rashi puts it, \u201ca woman, when she is married, they don\u2019t treat her as <\/span>hefker<\/em> <\/span>(ownerless, a free-for-all); Abarbanel adds \u201cand no one helps her\u201d \u2013 for even those with food and clothing might have other needs. (Have we, today, improved on these social realities?)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The desperation is heightened, of course, by the context: what is it about \u201cthat day\u201d in particular?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We heard in 3:25 of the deaths of many (male) soldiers \u2013 leading, presumably, to a rise in the number of widows. This context may shed some light on both the women\u2019s self-sufficiency and their desperation: perhaps they have inherited their husbands\u2019 property and can care for themselves, but feel emotionally lost without the marriage relationships they once enjoyed. Perhaps that personal sense of estrangement, rather than social \u201cdisgrace,\u201d is what they are really looking to alleviate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Bringing both points together \u2013 the societal benefits of a man\u2019s protection, and the context of war \u2013 a midrash suggests the enemy king had forbidden his soldiers from assaulting married women, which naturally increased desperation to grab a husband.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There is another element to the context as well. The prophet had earlier described \u201carrogant\u201d women, now stripped of their jewels and everything that supported their arrogance (3:18-24) \u2013 including, perhaps, their husbands.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Abarbanel argues that the arrogant women were actually a <\/span>mashal<\/span><\/em>, a metaphor for the destruction of everything that had previously made the <\/span>nation<\/b> proud. We might suggest that our verse continues the metaphor.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Throughout the time of the Jewish kingdoms, the prophets frequently scolded the people and its kings for running to other kings, or other gods, for protection. The challenges facing women of the times offer a poignant metaphor for those who, though believing to some degree in their own self-sufficiency, realized they needed <\/span>something<\/span><\/em> from someone else and would go running to a king or god as if desperate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In their desperation, they never realized that everything they already had was from God, and everything they still longed for could be found with Him as well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Or perhaps they realized, but also knew a relationship with God requires substance and mutual responsibility. It could never be in name only, but presents a constant challenge. The last two verses in our brief chapter make an obvious attempt at recalling the Exodus from Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The LORD will create over the whole shrine and meeting place of Mount Zion cloud by day and smoke with a glow of flaming fire by night. Indeed, over all the glory shall hang a canopy, which shall serve as a pavilion for shade from heat by day and as a shelter for protection against drenching rain (5-6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The \u201ccloud by day\u201d and \u201cglow of flaming fire by night\u201d are clearly reminiscent of the pillars of cloud and fire that went before the Israelites through the wilderness (Exodus 13:22). The pavilion (<\/span>sukkah<\/span><\/i>) is equally evocative of the booths in which God enabled them to reside during that journey (Leviticus 23:43). How do those reminiscences tie into the prophecy that addresses \u201cthose who remain in Zion and are left in Jerusalem\u201d and just who \u201cshall be called holy\u201d (3)?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Malbim* first drew a distinction between those \u201cwho remain in Zion\u201d deliberately and those who \u201care left in Jerusalem\u201d accidentally. He maintained that the former are the righteous, the latter, wicked.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\"The seer [Isaiah] provided a wonderful metaphor here. Not all will survive in Jerusalem and not all will be called holy, but just as the righteous will enjoy God\u2019s grace, the wicked will be consumed by its flame\u2026 Using as his metaphor the sun, which enlightens the clear-eyed while blinding the bat and snail, so will the light of God enlighten the righteous while burning the wicked to ashes, just as in Egypt the Israelites had light while the Egyptians suffered darkness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Thus, he described the [future] glory of the righteous as like that which they enjoyed in the desert when God preceded them in pillars of cloud by day and fire by night, saying that God will [duplicate them] over Mt. Zion for all who will be assembled there\u2014righteous and wicked alike\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, only the righteous in Jerusalem will be \u201cinscribed for life\u201d (3)\u2026 while God will first \u201cwash away the filth\u201d (4) of the wicked.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The notion of theodicy (God\u2019s justice) is often challenged by the presence of wicked who prosper. Not only the righteous survive catastrophe; there are also the wicked who find shelter in the shade of the righteous and even pretend to be like them. However, Malbim emphasized that God will see that ultimately the righteous, alone, will be rewarded, while the wicked will have to endure punishment before their rehabilitation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This short chapter focuses us on a key motif found throughout the book, a critical prediction and later historical detail about the Assyrian conquest of Israel. Many of the conquests of the land of Israel resulted in political defeat, but with relatively little loss of life. Yes, the Jewish king or governor might be deposed \u2013 but after regime change, the average Israelite continued to live in the same home as they always did, now paying taxes to a foreign leader. The Assyrian conquest is different. On the one hand, there is no political change in the South: the Judean king remains on his throne and the capital city Jerusalem retains its sovereignty. However, there is a dramatic loss of human life, and but a small remnant will remain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The book\u2019s first chapter compared Jerusalem to a lonely watchman\u2019s hut in a vineyard (1:8), one lonely remaining city in a wide land of destruction. Only \u201cme\u2019at<\/em>\u201d - a little bit - remains (1:9), otherwise the people would be totally destroyed like the cities of Sodom. Later, the prophet will use two other metaphors to capture this idea: the tree in winter (6:13) which loses all its leaves and has but the small, slim branches left; and the cascading river that threatens to drown (8:8). Indeed, the Assyrians take virtually the entirety of the Southern kingdom, (2 Kings 18:13) \u2013 essentially only leaving the small population of Jerusalem to survive.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The fourth chapter (4:2) also speaks to the fate of the small number of survivors. Those select few who will remain when the sin is washed away will be called \u201choly,\u201d and will have the protection of God\u2019s Sukkah upon their heads. The Sukkah-metaphor of destruction in chapter 1 is inverted to become a Sukkah of redemption. The survivors live an exalted life of meaning and Divine connection.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This chapter of course invites the question whether the ideal religious outcome is the destruction of most of the population and the survival of a small number. As idyllic a view as this chapter provides for the survivors, one imagines the goal of the prophecy is to motivate a full repentance by the entire population. Yet, this bittersweet chapter appears to be resigned to the fact that this isn\u2019t likely to happen. Instead, the sinners will perish, and the righteous will survive.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Seven women shall take hold of one man in that day, saying, \u201cWe will eat our own bread, and wear our own clothing. Just let us be called by your name. Take away our reproach.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\r\n

Isaiah 4:1 is part of a doomsday scenario in which the prophet warns the people of Judah of the horrors that will befall them if they don\u2019t turn away from their wickedness and turn toward God. Within this apocalyptic threat, Isaiah presents a vision of the future in which seven women will take hold of one man and throw themselves at his mercy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cTake away our reproach,\u201d they will beg him. Who is he, and who are the women? What does it mean that they will eat their own bread and wear their own clothing if only he\u2019ll let them be called by his name?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In a classic Isaiah-style metaphor, the women are the people of Judah, and the one man is God. This scene is Isaiah\u2019s premonition -- or hope -- that soon the Jewish people will see the errors of their ways and repent. That they will come begging God for redemption, begging Him to take their wrongs from them, bargaining with Him and promising to care for themselves and ask nothing of Him, if only He will take them back into His divine embrace and call them His people.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Desperate, repentant sinners. Begging for His love. Pleading to be taken back. Promising to behave in exchange for being cared for. This is how Isaiah casts women.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is not seven men who come begging in this way; it is women. When choosing a metaphor for the lowest point his people can reach, Isaiah chooses to depict these lowly, desperate creatures as female.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is clear from the Book of Isaiah what the prophet and scribes of his era thought of women. But when I read Isaiah 4:1, I can\u2019t help but think of the liberation of Tina Turner. In order to escape her abusive marriage, she walked away from the immense wealth accumulated during her partnership with Ike Turner. The only thing she asked for in the divorce was to keep her last name. To be free, Tina Turner was willing to \u201ceat [her] own bread, and wear [her] own clothing.\u201d She just asked to be called by the name she chose.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I don\u2019t believe for a moment that Isaiah\u2019s view of women was positive. Time and again the women of Isaiah serve as metaphors for the worst of the Jewish people. But the moment the prophet wrote these characters into existence, an opportunity arose to consider the story from their perspective. I, for one, like to imagine them as seven Tina Turners standing up for themselves and naming the terms of their own redemption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n
