Other kings who had fallen ill in Kings all died soon thereafter. It is no surprise that Isaiah informs Hezekiah that he will not be an exception: \u201cThus said the LORD: Set your affairs in order, for you are going to die; you will not get well\u201d (verse 1). Why does Isaiah say that Hezekiah will both die and not get well? If he dies, clearly, he will not get better. The Talmud in Brachot provides a midrashic answer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Isaiah informed Hezekiah that he would die in this world and not live in the world to come. The reason for his punishment was because he was not yet married and had no children. Hezekiah protested and explained that he saw in a vision that his son Manassas would be an evil king, so he remained celibate. Isaiah responds that it is not up to Hezekiah to dictate God\u2019s plan. He is obligated to procreate, so he must do it. Hezekiah then asks Isaiah for his daughter as a wife to possibly assist in overturning the decree of Manassas. Isaiah again pushes back telling the king it has already been decreed. Hezekiah recalls a family tradition from David that even at the moment of death one can repent and pray for forgiveness. Isaiah leaves the king, and immediately the king prays for mercy. Before Isaiah can leave the palace, God sends him back with a message to Hezekiah that he will be healed and live another 15 years.<\/span><\/p>\r\n What is the motivation behind the Talmud\u2019s back and forth between the prophet and the king? The jumping off point is the odd phrasing discussed above, but the Talmud must also have been motivated by the fact that Hezekiah seems blameless until this point. The Talmud sees someone getting sick in Tanach and there must be a reason behind it. But then why the tale of the evil child?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The back and forth regarding Hezekiah\u2019s celibacy sets up a larger metaphor for the end of the kingdom of Judah, and one that is just as much a message to Isaiah as it is for Hezekiah. Hezekiah is trying to act like Jonah. He wants to avoid doing anything that could possibly lead to evil. Isaiah\u2019s message is that God has a plan, and man is not able to stop it. Both of these viewpoints are wrong, and it is God who has to teach that lesson to both men. Hezekiah turns to God to pray and change the outcome of his edict and it works. Isaiah, meanwhile, leaves the king mid-conversation because he is convinced Hezekiah is irredeemable. God has to turn him around to show Isaiah that yes, God may have a plan and decree, but it is possible, with repentance, to overcome that decree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n In the name of his faith and mission, he was willing to depart from the obvious path that simple faith might seem to require.<\/span><\/p>\r\n An example occurs in our chapter, when Hezekiah becomes dangerously ill, and the prophet Isaiah tells him he will die. Rather than submit meekly to the divine sentence, Hezekiah turns to God in whole-hearted prayer. Before Isaiah can leave the palace, God tells him to return to the king and say that his prayer for recovery has been answered. Out of a deeper faith in God\u2019s mercy, Hezekiah disputes and overturns the prophet\u2019s decree.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n In a fascinating piece of Talmud, the rabbis seem to grasp this striking attribute: <\/span><\/p>\r\n King Hezekiah performed six actions. About three of them, the Sages agreed with him; and about three of them, the Sages did not agree. King Hezekiah dragged the bones of his father Ahaz on a bier of ropes and the Sages agreed. He ground the copper snake and they agreed. He suppressed the Book of Cures, and they agreed.\u00a0 All these acts were audaciously innovative. Destroying the copper snake that Moses himself had made; denying his wicked father an honorable burial; cutting down doors of the holy sanctuary to pay protection to the King of Assyria, rerouting the waters of Gihon and transgressing the usual laws of the calendar; all these infringed on the ordinary canons of nature or of religion, for what Hezekiah judged a greater purpose. The rabbis endorsed half of these steps; as for the other half they thought the King went too far.<\/span><\/p>\r\n This reading helps understand a haunting Talmudic tale (Brachot 28b) that I never grasped before studying Hezekiah\u2019s story. When Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai is on his deathbed, his students find him crying. Why, they ask. Because, Rabbi Yochanan answers, because he doesn\u2019t know if he is bound for heaven or hell. Rabbi Yochanan, recall, made the revolutionary decision to abandon Jerusalem and refound Jewish life in Yavneh. To the very end he doesn\u2019t know if he was right.<\/span><\/p>\r\n His last instruction to the students is \u201cprepare a seat for Hezekiah, King of Judah who is coming.\u201d Why Hezekiah? The Hassidic commentary, Mei Shiloach answers beautifully, \u201cbecause Hezekiah too was in doubt all his life whether what he did was right, as it says about three things the rabbis agreed and three things they didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n At Rabbi Yochanan\u2019s moment of leaving the world, Hezekiah, who also made choices of comparable bravery, fatefulness and magnitude without any He perceived prophetically that he would produce wicked children, and chose not to marry rather than risk bringing such children into the world.<\/span><\/p>\r\n When the king falls ill, the prophet Isaiah informs him that death is imminent, because of his failure to do due diligence towards the mitzvah of procreation. Hezekiah\u2019s good intentions, his desire to prevent the crimes of his future child, do not move the prophet, who responds: \u201cWhy are you getting involved with God\u2019s secrets? You must do what you are commanded, and God will do as He pleases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n Ok, then,<\/em> <\/span>says Hezekiah.<\/span> If you think there\u2019s a chance my marrying could be a good thing, how about I marry your daughter?<\/span><\/em> \u201cMaybe my merit and her merit combined will produce virtuous children.\u201d Isaiah protests that the decree is already set, and the king kicks him out.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Why won\u2019t Isaiah support the king\u2019s repentance by allowing him to marry his daughter? The Talmud\u2019s account implies Isaiah thought the marriage would be too little too late, that the king\u2019s death was already decreed; Hezekiah kicked him out because he realized he knew better than the prophet about hope. He could take it from there on his own, and pray for forgiveness and recovery \u2013 because no decree is truly set in stone.<\/span><\/p>\r\n But I wonder if Isaiah was making another point. Hezekiah sinned because he hoped it would cheat fate, and he initially attempts to repent for that sin with the same perspective: trying to circumvent the destiny he knows is in store, this time through fancy merit mathematics. The prophet, however, responds by reiterating his earlier message: What we might call \u201cfate\u201d or \u201cdestiny\u201d is in God\u2019s hands, subject to His plans \u2013 not yours. You do what you are responsible to do, and let God worry about the rest; for if He has indeed already decreed that destiny, none of your tricks will change it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Maybe they were both right.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n We are not prophets and can\u2019t see future negative results of our positive actions \u2013 but we might easily examine the same trajectory in the reverse, questioning our positive actions when we see the negatives they enabled. Too often we wallow in the past, regretting our choices because of what we know now even though we never could have known it then.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Isaiah reminds us that in the present, we can only do our best. We are responsible for our jobs, not God\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Yet as Hezekiah demonstrates, we should never lose hope. First, he became critically ill. Then, after reciting what\u2014to all appearances\u2014was a very brief prayer (it takes up barely two thirds of v. 3), Isaiah returned to forecast his recovery and that God would even grant him 15 extra years. So far, so good. But then, Hezekiah asked the prophet to provide a sign to establish the credibility of his prediction, which seemed to jeopardize his situation by giving an indication that his faith was somehow imperfect. However, the prophet acceded to his request and even granted him his choice of signs, which was realized in practice (\u201clet the shadow recede ten degrees\u201d 10-11).<\/span><\/p>\r\n So far, so good\u2014again. But then, the Babylonians made their initial appearance as an up and coming world power and presented Hezekiah with yet another challenge. After receiving a Babylonian delegation bearing him a gift (on account of his illness), Hezekiah took them on a tour of all the treasuries and storehouses in his kingdom (which must have been replenished since he emptied them in tribute to Assyria in chapter 18). One can easily imagine how the Judean king, ruling over a very small territory, was captivated by the attention shown him by the Babylonian king and reciprocated by proudly showing off his own wealth and importance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Then, Isaiah made yet another appearance and rebuked the king for his extravagant openness and predicted that those same Babylonians would empty those treasuries and take Hezekiah\u2019s royal descendants captive, as, in fact, they eventually did, although not for another century. The chapter closes with a somewhat oblique statement: \u201cHezekiah declared to Isaiah, \u2018The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good\u2019. For he thought, it meant that safety is assured for my time\u201d (19). Once again, we are challenged to determine whether this statement is entirely self-serving or\u2014as in the case of the receding shade\u2014another attempt by Hezekiah to set the terms of his own They approve of Hezekiah's war on idolatry: his humiliation of his father's hearse and his disposal of Moses's serpent. But the debate regarding his hiding of the Book of Remedies will open a fascinating discussion regarding questions of faith versus self-reliance. What is the Book of Remedies, and if, as it sounds, it is a compendium of cures, a medical almanac, why would anyone destroy it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Rashi (Pesahim 55b-56a) explains that the \"Book of Remedies\" supplied a swift medicinal solution to any ailment, and in doing so, it eliminated the need to rely upon God. Sickness is a prime opportunity to reach out to the divine, and this book was simply providing a shortcut to health, without appealing to God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Maimonides was flabbergasted at this interpretation: <\/span><\/p>\r\n How nonsensical is this argument, and how deluded! It ascribes a degree of foolishness to Hezekiah... According to their confused and idiotic reasoning, if a person is hungry and turns to bread and consumes it, thus becoming healed from that great \"sickness\" of hunger, shall we say that he has lost his faith in God? Only fools would say that! For just as I thank God when I eat for that which He provided me to relieve my hunger and to sustain and preserve me, so too will I thank Him for providing me with a remedy which heals sickness\u201d (Commentary on the Mishna, Pesahim, ch. 4).<\/span><\/p>\r\n Maimonides is suggesting that medicine is no more an affront to God than human nutrition. God has granted humans the intelligence to cure disease using medicine just as He has given us food to relieve hunger. The conclusion of the <\/span>mishna<\/span><\/em> quoted above states that the sages disapproved of Hezekiah's rerouting of the Shiloah spring, \"because he should have relied upon God\" (Rashi). But again, is this line of thinking realistically acceptable? Should Hezekiah have left his city defenseless as the Assyrians prepared for war?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n This returns us to our central question: When is it legitimate to exercise human initiative, and when is it more appropriate to rely upon God?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n We leave Hezekiah with these challenging reflections. The question that looms over Hezekiah's reign is the balance between human initiative and reliance on God. Hezekiah is a man of great faith and commitment who leaves a powerful legacy as one of the greatest of the Judahite kings, and precisely a king of his stature needs to advance his nation on rational political lines. A device of this sort has been found in Egypt.
