The Philistines, Arameans, Moabites, and Ammonites all played various roles in harassing the Israelites. Then the Assyrians entered the picture and wiped out the North and most of Judah, but they stopped short of total destruction.

Chapter 24 introduces the latest superpower- the Babylonians. For a nation that has not had an impact so far, at least in their more contemporary form, they enter the story with a bang. First, the Babylonians subdue the mighty Egyptians- conquering much of the Egyptian territory. Then they turn their sights on the tiny kingdom of Judah that they passed on their way to Egypt. At this point, the young Jehoiachin is king and does not stand a chance against the powerful foe. The Babylonians enter the city and begin the long destruction process with the first exile of the nobility and upper class, including the king. All that is left in Judah is the lower classes of the population.

Nebuchadnezzar appoints Jehoiachin's uncle as king, and in a further disgrace, he changes his name from Mattaniah to Zedekiah. Changing names is not something new in Tanach. God changes the names of Abram, Sarai, and Moses changes Hoshea’s name (to Joshua). All of these names are different Hebrew versions of an already Hebrew name. Pharoah changes Joseph’s name to an Egyptian one when he makes him grand vizier. Later on, Daniel and his compatriots will have their names changed to Babylonian names.

One would have expected that like Pharoah, and like he does later, the foreign king would change his vassal’s name to a foreign name. But Nebuchadnezzar does not change Mattaniah’s name to a Babylonian one. Instead, he selects another Hebrew name and a flattering one at that- God is righteous. Some interpret this as hubris on Nebuchadnezzar’s part claiming that he was righteous because God had chosen him to destroy the city. The Talmud in Keritot 5b offers that Nebuchadnezzar named him Zedekiah as warning that God will be in the right to punish Zedekiah if he rebels against Nebuchadnezzar. This is supported by the end of the chapter:

Indeed, Jerusalem and Judah were a cause of anger for the LORD, so that He cast them out of His presence. The narrative faithfully records the lineage of the Kings of Judah and Israel, their successes, failures, alliances, political intrigues, sieges wars, dynastic marriages births and deaths. The authors understood statecraft. Events have a recognizable political logic to them. And at the same time the story is interspersed with the vignettes and prophetic observations about the moral and spiritual history of the times: This king did good in God’s eyes, that king did evil; God blessed the people accordingly, with peace and prosperity for the good and punished them with war and upheaval for the bad.

The vicissitudes of nations and empires that may have seemed either politically predictable or chaotic and arbitrary to those enmeshed in them are presented in the light of prophetic hindsight - as the moral consequences of inexorable spiritual laws.

The beginning of Chapter 24 is a fine example of this. The question of “why?” directs us to a deeper answer, in the belief that history has a greater meaning. That meaning, according to verses 3-4 is that the destruction is based on moral sins too great to be forgiven: “All this befell Judah at the command of the LORD, who banished [them] from His presence because of all the sins that Manasseh had committed, and also because of the blood of the innocent that he shed. For he filled Jerusalem with the blood of the innocent, and the LORD would not forgive.”

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Points-to-ponder.jpg","1536x1536-width":1000,"1536x1536-height":1000,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Points-to-ponder.jpg","2048x2048-width":1000,"2048x2048-height":1000
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Points-to-ponder.jpg","1536x1536-width":1000,"1536x1536-height":1000,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Points-to-ponder.jpg","2048x2048-width":1000,"2048x2048-height":1000
