After recounting in unsparing detail the plundering of the Temple, the exile of people and finally the utter devastation of Judea, the author flashes forward 27 years into the depths of the Babylonian exile and gives us this little anecdote about the treatment of the exiled King Jehoiachin:

“In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of King Jehoiachin of Judah...King Evilmerodach of Babylon, in the year he became king, took note of King Jehoiachin of Judah and released him from prison. He spoke kindly to him, and gave him a throne above those of other kings who were with him in Babylon. His prison garments were removed, and [Jehoiachin] received regular rations by his favor for the rest of his life. A regular allotment of food was given him at the instance of the king—an allotment for each day—all the days of his life” (25:27-30).

The commentators are divided on how to read this vignette. Is Merodakh’s patronizing treatment of the former King an expression of the ultimate degradation of Judah, as if Jehoiachin has become so harmless and pathetic that he no longer needs to be humiliated? Or should we see the material improvement of the former king as a sign of comfort and a portent that the worst is over and the Judah’s fortunes are set to rise?

Da’at Mikra shows how the narrative of the kingdom’s decline and fall is replete with linguistic parallels to the descriptions of Judah at the height of its glory under David and Solomon.

For example, at the end of his life David blesses God that he has merited that “his eyes see” his son Solomon peacefully succeeding him on the throne” (I Kings I:48). In grotesque contrast, King Zedekiah is made to watch as his sons are slaughtered in front of him, before the King’s eyes are put out so he will see nothing else ever again (II Kings 25:7). The very last thing he is permitted to witness is the violent destruction of his dynasty. This awful episode is made more painful still by the reference to David seeing his son’s serene succession.

Similarly, the epilogue, of Jehoiachin eating food from the King of Babylon’s table is set against the effusive descriptions of the food at King Solomon’s table (I Kings 5:2-3) and the multitudes who ate from the King’s table at the zenith of the kingdom. Jehoiachin’s humiliation is rendered all the more acute by this verbal resonance.

And yet, Da’at Mikra sees in this a sign of hope. All the degradations of Israel have now played out, the precise inverses of her glory days. We’ve read chapter after chapter about prophets and kings, royal intrigue, wars and miracles, exile and destruction. The Holy Temple, so deeply longed for and celebrated at the beginning of Kings I, has just been conquered and destroyed by foreign rulers.

We might expect the book to end with a powerful lament, or perhaps a prophecy of hope for the nation’s future. Something on a grand enough scale to match the disaster that befell the people. But instead, we read somewhat mundanely that Jehoiachin, the defeated king of Judah, was released from prison. The end.

Then again, perhaps we shouldn’t knock the small stuff; there can be important takeaways on every level.

For whatever reason the Babylonian king decided to release Jehoiachin, he didn’t only release him. If we want to be metaphorically-literal about it, he “raised his head.” In the much earlier story of Joseph, that phrase is used to describe both the baker’s beheading and the butler’s reinstatement (Genesis 40: 13, 19); in verse 27, we (and Jehoiachin himself?) may not be sure which sort of head-raising experience awaits. But as we read on, we discover what else the king did, that it was a reinstatement of sorts – not as king, but as a person of dignity. We also get some clues as to what it takes to create a sense of dignity for a person: kind words, social recognition, nice clothing, and food – not just a meal or two, but real food security. The parallels to Joseph’s own release from prison are also quite striking!

The inclusion of each of those details seems designed to highlight the necessity of them all; we might particularly note the apparently superfluous mention of kind words, without which even official status, nice clothing, and food security could leave a person feeling somewhat empty.

At the same time, what the conquered Judaean king experiences on an individual level might indeed offer a message of hope on a grander scale. Jehoiachin’s survival means there is hope for the survival of the Davidic line, and his survival with restored dignity signifies the hope that the dignity of the Jewish people will be restored. In fact, Jehoiachin’s survival led to the birth of Zerubbabel – who ultimately leads the people back to their land.

Jehoiachin’s Babylonian imprisonment was temporary, and so was his people’s Babylonian exile. Like him, the people will be restored, if not to their former glory, at least to a degree of dignity and security.

Of course, one wonders whether Jehoiachin could ever have felt completely secure, or whether he would have been constantly watching his step to remain in the Babylonian ruler’s good graces – and it will be up to the Jewish people, when they do return to their land, to determine by their actions whether they will remain in their Ruler’s good graces. The grand scale of Jewish history is far from complete.

image: Engraving of "Manasseh Led Away Captive" published in The Story of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, published by Charles Foster in 1883.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2kings25-king-prison.jpg","1536x1536-width":1500,"1536x1536-height":844,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2kings25-king-prison.jpg","2048x2048-width":1500,"2048x2048-height":844
Like Joseph, Jehoiachin is released, and with him - One might wish that the story of the Israelites had ended in a happy, celebratory, victorious way, to parallel how that story began, with the Exodus. But if you’ve been reading along with II Kings, you know that the story is going in a very different direction. In fact, on the face of it, this chapter is the most dire of all: Jerusalem is besieged, the city is breached, the Temple is then destroyed, and the people taken into exile. King Zedekiah witnesses his own sons’ execution before having his eyes gouged out.

Finally, the last glimmer of hope is snuffed out with the assassination of Gedaliah by fellow Jews.

Throughout this chapter, the events are described in excruciating detail: we’re told the geography of the city as the Babylonians rampage through it, we’re told exhaustively of the spoils they took from the Temple, and we’re given a long list of Judean dignitaries and officials executed by the Babylonian King.

The chapter, the book, the story: they all end with a twist. In the last few verses, all the despair and woe of the previous two chapters is set aside: Jehoiachin, formerly king of Judah, current Babylonian captive, is freed from captivity by the new Babylonian king. Not only is he freed, but we learn, in the exacting detail used in the rest of the chapter, that Jehoiachin is treated well and given a special place of honour in the Babylonian court.

Decades after his exile, and indeed decades after the destruction of the Temple, there is a glimmer of hope. Jehoiachin’s freedom and elevation are a sign to the reader-in-exile that despite all the evil that has befallen us, times will change, things will get better, kindness will return.

One phrase is especially poignant: vayedaber ito tovot - “He spoke kindly to him”. These last verses of the Israelite story forecast a renewal of hope, goodness, wholeness, all fueled by a simple kindness. So, it’s true, the story doesn’t end the same way it began. Those that could be carried off to Babylonia were taken there, while those that could not be transported intact—like the bronze pillars, stands, and tank (13)—were broken up and carried off piecemeal. Zedekiah paid a dear price for his rebelliousness: his own sons were killed in his presence and then he was blinded. The high priest, his deputy, and three official gatekeepers of the Temple were executed, along with the captain of the guard and other military officers.

Again (see 24:14), only the upper class was exiled; the most impoverished of the population were left behind “to be vinedressers and field hands” (12). Indeed, the only words of his that have been recorded in the Bible are “Stay in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you” (24). Gedaliah did not last long. He was assassinated by survivors of the royal family (hence the Fast of Gedaliah) and the remaining Judeans fled to Egypt in fear of Babylonian reprisal.

On the other hand, the Book of Kings ends on a somewhat positive note: Nebuchadnezzar’s son and successor eventually released Jehoiachin from prison (27), elevated him to the highest ranks of Babylonian nobility (28), and provided for his lifetime maintenance (29).
