The account of King Jehoash is marked by a notable contradiction:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

All his days Jehoash did what was pleasing to the LORD\u2026 The shrines (<\/span>bamot<\/span><\/em>) however, were not removed; the people continued to sacrifice and\u00a0 offer at the shrines (verses 3-4).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jewish tradition (<\/span>Mishna Zevachim 14<\/span><\/a>) specifically prohibited the employment of <\/span>bamot<\/em> <\/span>for Divine worship when there was a central Tabernacle in Shiloh, Nov, and Gibeon, and a Temple in Jerusalem, so how could it be said of Jehoash that he \u201cdid what was pleasing to the LORD\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Don Yitzchak Abrabanel states that since the people were offering their sacrifices to God, as opposed to idolatrous deities, and the Temple was at that time in particular disarray, Jehoash thought that \u201cno harm was being done.\u201d\u00a0 Furthermore, the biblical text describes the manner in which he made concerted efforts to have the Temple repaired, and he would have succeeded in this endeavor, had he not had to bribe the Arameans not to attack Jerusalem.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

It appears then that the dilemma that confronted Jehoash was whether worshiping God in an individualized fashion, i.e., utilizing <\/span>bamot<\/span><\/em>, should be given precedence over centralized worship in the Temple, authorized though lacking in a pleasing type of general environment and the presence of a cross-section of the Jewish people.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
