This dramatic scene is depicted in 1697 Antoine Coypel’s aptly named painting “Athaliah Expelled from the Temple.” Coypel was the court painter for Louis XV and the director of the Academie Royal. The extremely young Joash is depicted on the throne that is way too big for its youthful inhabitant. He is dressed royally, but clearly unaware of what’s going on around him. The central figure is actually Jehoiada who stands firmly to his side with finger pointing at Athaliah. Athaliah is struggling against the guards and has an expression that perhaps seeks mercy from her grandson. Half the crowd watches in amazement as the queen is whisked away while the other half bows and proclaims Joash the true king. The woman in green to Joash’s side may be Jehosheba, given her proximity to the young king. The throne itself seems to be placed haphazardly in the great hall of the Temple, perhaps there to assist in the swift coronation. Two turbaned men stand guard next to the throne. These are most likely fellow priests who helped protect the king in hiding. Too young to actually hold a sword and shield, perhaps the weapons placed at the foot of the throne are further symbols of Joash’s royal lineage. The painting is extremely busy, especially the background. The mass of armed men and fitful movement helps capture the chaos of the day.

Image: Antoine Coypel, Athaliah Expelled from the Temple, 1697, This raises the question of how David could have been permitted to make use of a crown that had been an object of idol worship and therefore under the category of items from which deriving benefit is prohibited? To solve this difficulty, Rav Naḥman suggests that one of David’s Canaanite generals, Itai Ha-Giti, had revoked its status as an object of idol worship. The Talmud goes on to ask how David could support on his head such a heavy crown? Rav Yehuda says that Rav says that the crown did not securely encircle any human head, but rather that it was refitted to rest lightly specifically on David’s head. But, Rabbi Yosi, son of Rabbi Ḥanina, contends that the crown had a built-in magnet (even shoevet) that allowed the heavy golden crown to be suspended just above King David’s head, creating the appearance that he was wearing it. She rules over Judah for more than six years and is the only woman to ever do so in that official capacity. She claims this position as the mother of the last slain monarch, Ahaziah, but arrives at this place of power through her own cunning and murderous actions. Immediately upon the death of her son, King Ahaziah, she wipes out all remaining descendants who might lay claim to the throne. She acts much like her predecessors and clears her own path to power, with one major difference: She is a woman. In ancient Israel no woman has held the throne.

There is, however, another twist in the story. One heir to the throne, a baby boy named Joash, survives her purge. Jehosheba, the sister of the preceding (now deceased) King Ahaziah, along with her husband, the priest Jehoiada, hatch a plan to hide Joash away and ultimately, on his seventh birthday, present him to the people and anoint him as King. As they do so, Athaliah cries out “treason”, which it is, but to no avail. The people and the priests are behind the newly crowned King Joash and she is powerless to stop them. The story of Athaliah ends with her murder in her own palace.

What are we to make of this episode? Picture the scene: a queen who has been ruling for 6 years being replaced with a seven year old boy. Certainly, this plan was not his. Joash is merely a pawn in the power schemes of others. What was driving the people to do this? Why so much urgency to dethrone Athaliah? Could they not have just waited a few more years until the natural death of Athaliah or at least until the boy had matured into a man and might fulfill this role with some competence?

The rabbis try to answer these open questions. They try to fill in these blank spaces by imputing to her a desire to destroy the Davidic dynasty and they cast her as an adulteress – in other words, a bad woman who needed to be removed.

Yet, all such indications are absent from the text of Kings itself. In fact, Athaliah’s actions mimic those of a long line of monarchs, who wipe out challengers to their power and destroy the remaining lineage of Ahab, and other evil Kings. This leaves us wondering: Was she any worse than the many previous evil Kings? Could it be that her fatal flaw, which necessitated her replacement by a seven-year old boy, was not anything that she herself did, but simply her status as a woman, acting in a way and playing a role that until then only men had inhabited?

Is the story of the Athaliah a relic of the past or are there ways that we see her story still alive today?

Image: Athaliah, as depicted in Antoine Dufour’s Vie des femmes célèbres, c. 1505; in the Dobrée Museum, Nantes, France. This violation is expressed in the narrator's omission of a formulaic regnal summary; the daughter of Jezebel may administrate the kingdom, but her name will never be recorded in the roster of Judahite kings. Athaliah's behavior bears witness to the corrupting influences of the northern kingdom, such as the execution of the deposed royal line and the adoption of Baal worship — norms that have now seeped into the political culture of Judah.

Unlike Jehu's revolution in Israel, Athaliah's motive in massacring her own family is inexplicit. Her passion was simply for power itself, and this drive of hers was so strong that it caused her to carry out a series of extreme acts....She did not even make any serious political or religious changes within the country. She became simply a manifestation of this one drive: to rule.”

She is the sole female biblical figure to be awarded the moniker: "the Wicked" - hamirshaat (II Chr. 24:7).
