Chapters 9 and 10 are full of the bloody campaign of Jehu. The body count is astounding. In chapter 9, Jehu kills 1) Joram, 2) Ahaziah, 3) Jezebel. Three is a very small number, but Jehu gets bonus points for killing not only the king of Israel, but also the king of Judah and the queen mother. In chapter 10, the gloves are off. It turns out that Ahab, like the judge Gideon, had 70 sons. At the start of chapter 10, these 70 become ‘kills’ number 4-73 with a bonus for the heads being placed in baskets and sent to Jehu. Not content with baskets of severed heads, Jehu has them piled up in heaps outside the city.

The next deaths are not numbered, but the text goes into great detail about who was killed. Jehu dispensed with not only the rest of Ahab’s household, but also killed all the lords, Ahab’s friends, and his priests. It is unclear if these are priests of Baal or priests that worked in the Golden Calf sanctuaries. Numbered kills 73-115 are courtesy of the 42 brothers of Ahaziah that Jehu meets along the way to Samaria. The group of 42 claim to be traveling to salute the king and queen. It is possible that they had not yet heard about the royal massacre in chapter 9 or that they were coming to pledge fealty to Jehu. It does not matter, because Jehu takes them alive, and then has them killed over a pit.

He returns to Samaria and then kills another unknown number of people connected to the house of Ahab in Samaria. Jehu then fakes a major Baal-fest at the main temple in Samaria. He gathers every single Baal priest and Baal worshiper in Israel to a jam-packed Baal event. As the party rages inside, Jehu channels his inner Samson. He traps the people inside, and instructs his men to slaughter every single last one of them. The exact number is not listed in the text, but there is another source one can use to estimate. In Judges 16, the text describes that the temple of Dagon housed over 3000 individuals. It is very likely that the temple to Baal accommodated at least that amount if not more. The final tally for Jehu is unknown, but the last two chapters give no doubt that Jehu’s campaign was both highly successful and highly bloody.

-62029f2bc4076--62029f2bc4077gen4-murder blood Knowing that he is a military captain and not part of the royal lineage, Jehu sets up a loyalty test to solidify his rule. This test involves the people decapitating the remaining 70 children and grandchildren of Ahab and delivering their heads to Jehu. He then moves on to eliminating the many devotees of Baal, the prophets, priests and lay people, along with their places of worship, all of which are summarily destroyed.

Yet, after all of this drama and effort to eliminate the pervasive presence of Baal, Jehu ultimately fails to end his reign as a “good King”. In two consecutive verses we hear both of his great victory and his great failure. Verse 28 celebrates that Jehu has successfully accomplished the daunting feat of abolishing Baal from Israel, however this is immediately followed by a big “but” in verse 29. But, Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam… and did not remove the Golden Calves.

Really? Jehu, who describes himself as “zealous for God” (v. 15) doesn’t know better than to finish off the task? What is it about these Golden Calves? Abarbanel explains that the calves were not intended as idols or worshipped as such by their creator, Jeroboam, and likewise Jehu did not see them as a threat. Jeroboam simply created them as symbols of his tribe, Ephraim. However, over time, the people began to worship them. And such was the case with Jehu, who we are told in the next verses was not able to continue to walk in the path of God, despite having shed so much blood in his attempt to do so.

Much as with the original Golden Calf of Exodus, the people in the time of Jehu, who were accustomed to a life of idolatry, could not make such an abrupt shift to a new life of monotheism overnight. Simply destroying the infrastructure of Baal worship could not change their hearts and undermine their temptations. As with all ingrained behaviors, addictions and beliefs, change is a process and having options for regression, such as golden calves laying around, makes that process even harder. While Jehu’s zealous intentions may have been good, he failed to know his audience and even to know himself. Golden Calves would once again be the downfall of Israel.

Image: Bull in Istanbul Ancient Orient Museum Ishtar Gate / wikipedia

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2kings10-golden-calf.jpg","1536x1536-width":640,"1536x1536-height":426,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2kings10-golden-calf.jpg","2048x2048-width":640,"2048x2048-height":426
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2kings10-golden-calf.jpg","1536x1536-width":640,"1536x1536-height":426,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2kings10-golden-calf.jpg","2048x2048-width":640,"2048x2048-height":426
Jehu: A Passion For Good? The closing lines of II Kings 10 offer only a scant but representative glimpse of Jehu's era, a period of national decline: “In those days, the Lord began to reduce Israel. And Hazael smote them throughout the territory of Israel east of the Jordan, all the land of the Gilead…” (II Kings 10:32-33).

What we witness here is a total capitulation on Israel's eastern front, in which Hazael's forces dominate the Israelite tribes on the east side of the Jordan. "The Lord began to reduce Israel" sounds very much like divine displeasure with Jehu. The waning of Israel's power may have political underpinnings. Jehu's assassination of Jezebel and his removal of Baal engendered a rupture of ties with Phoenicia; his execution of the royals of Judah left him without a southern ally. This situation damaged the kingdom military and economically, leaving Jehu vulnerable and weak. And yet it is not without some irony that Jehu, the swashbuckling military captain, proved inept at defending his people, unable to succeed on the battlefield where his predecessor failed.

In these final lines of the chapter, Jehu is not a success story. We leave this dramatic episode with a complex understanding of Jehu: on the one hand a zealot for God, but on the other hand a man who failed to adopt for himself the high standards that he demanded from others. As shall be seen, his is the longest-ruling dynasty of the northern kingdom, and yet he presides over the beginning of a period in which Israel will suffer greatly from Aramean dominance.

Alex Israel, II Kings: In a Whirlwind, Maggid Books, 2019, Jehu’s Revolt

Alex Israel - Since the combination is unique to this chapter and to Jeremiah, the medieval exegetes were inclined to regard them as one and the same.
