After multiple chapters detailing the history of the house of Omri and the ravages brought to Israel in its wake, chapter 9 signals the end of Ahab\u2019s dynasty in the North. This chapter is yet another colorful read. There are a few conversations with sharp retorts that match the sharp swords brandished about. The first is between Jehu and Joram, the king of Israel. Elisha tells Jehu that he will become king. Jehu races towards the city where Joram is waiting. The watchman recognizes Joram\u2019s wild charioteering. This is probably one of the only times in Tanach where someone is recognized for reckless driving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Joram goes out to greet Jehu and asks: \u201c\u2018Is all well, Jehu?\u2019 But Jehu replied, \u2018How can all be well as long as your mother Jezebel carries on her countless harlotries and sorceries?\u2019\u201d (verse 22). Joram is no match for his wild-driving general. He greets him hoping for the best, but Jehu, without hesitation, plunges a verbal dagger into Joram\u2019s heart. Joram knows what is about to happen, and he turns heel and races away calling out to his cousin Ahaziah, the king of Judah, that regicide is about to take place. Jehu\u2019s words landed with a direct hit, and so did his arrow. In one shot he slays the fleeing Joram.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After dispatching King Ahaziah as well, Jehu finally meets a proper verbal sparring partner, Jezebel. Jezebel gets all dolled up either to entice Jehu or to enhance her royal stature. Jehu enters the throne room and \u201cas Jehu entered the gate, she called out, \u2018is all well, Zimri, murderer of your master?\u2019\u201d (verse 31). Jezebel knows her Israelite history well. Zimri was the former general who assassinated Elah, then king of Israel. Jezebel\u2019s question is meant as a sharp rebuke of Jehu not just because she references a famous usurper, but for what happened next. Zimri is only king for seven days before Omri, Jezebel\u2019s father-in-law, took the crown from him. Jezebel may be telling Jehu not to rest on his laurels. The last general who assassinated a king only lasted seven days before the house of Omri took over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The queen deserved either a royal death or a royal retort. This time, however, Jehu does not match sharp words with a sharp sword. Instead, he gives her an ignominious ending. He does not even give her the respect of killing her himself, rather, he gets one of her eunuchs to defenestrate her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cWhat goes around\u2014come around.\u201d That is the contemporary equivalent of the rabbinic expression \u201cBy the measure with which one metes out, so is it meted out to him.\u201d Philosophers and theologians call it <\/span>lex talionis<\/span><\/i>, Latin for the law of retaliation, and literary types may call it poetic justice. In this chapter, we witness such a reversal of the fortunes of the House of Ahab.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Elijah had cautioned his royal nemesis that \u201cI will bring disaster upon you. I will make a clean sweep of you, I will cut off from Israel every male belonging to Ahab, bond and free\u201d (1 Kings 21:21). In this chapter, Elisha\u2019s appointed messenger, in anointing Jehu to succeed Jehoram son of Ahab, announced: \u201cThe whole House of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off every male belonging to Ahab, bond and free in Israel (v.8). In that earlier warning, Elijah had said: \u201cIn the very place where the dogs lapped up Naboth\u2019s blood [i.e., his field in Jezreel], the dogs will lap up your blood too\u201d (1 Kings 21:19), and in this chapter the messenger said: \u201cThe dogs shall devour Jezebel in the field of Jezreel, with none to bury her\u201d (10).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Finally, as Jehu approached, Jezebel\u2014who, curiously, had prepared for her denouement by painting her eyes and dressing her hair (30)\u2014 went for the last word, addressing him (as in the title of these remarks) as Zimri, an officer who had rebelled against the earlier King Ba`asha, slaying him and his household (1 Kings 16:10). If Jezebel was up on her royal history\u2014or on her Tanakh, for that matter\u2014there might have been a twinge of sarcasm in this metaphor, given that Zimri ruled for only seven days (16:16). More intriguing, however, is the coincidence (?) that Ba`asha\u2019s downfall was forecast by a prophet named Jehu. Go figure.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If you hadn\u2019t been paying attention and happened upon the end of Chapter 9 of 2 Kings, you might think you had just entered a Quentin Tarantino film. This chapter describes the terrible death of Jezebel, who serves as one of the great villains of the Book of Kings. Since marrying King Ahab, she has increased the worship of Baal in the Kingdom of Israel, threatened Elijah with death and orchestrated the plunder and murder of Naboth, a simple man who refused to give up his vineyard to the King.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As a result of these actions, like many of her idol-worshiping compatriots, she comes to an untimely death, as promised by God. Yet, her death stands out in two ways. One is her very gory death and the accompanying graphic description. We read that, \u201cthey pushed her out [of the window] and some of her blood splattered on the wall and on the horses and they trampled her.\u201d If that was not enough, we are further told that when they went to bury her, \u201cthey were only able to find her skull, feet and the palms of her hands\u201d which as the text reminds us, fulfills Elijah\u2019s prophecy that dogs will devour Jezebel\u2019s flesh. These hauntingly graphic images are meant to be so.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The second noteworthy aspect of her death is Jehu\u2019s insistence, after ordering she be murdered in this manner, that she be given a proper burial. What are we to make of Jehu\u2019s initiating both her disgraceful death and her respectful burial? The answer given by Jehu in text is that she is a King\u2019s daughter, which seems not to solve any of the above issues. If her royal status earned her a decent burial, why did it not protect her from this gruesomely executed death?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashi adds a layer to the story, based on a midrash, and tells us that despite her evil ways, Jezebel did carry with her some merit. It was her practice to dance before brides, using her hands, feet and head and it was this one act that earned her a proper burial. The same hands, feet and head that were accomplices to her evil ways also brought great happiness to brides on their wedding day.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Can you imagine Jezebel, the scheming wife of Ahab whose name has become synonymous forever more with cunning evildoers, joyously dancing and moving her head, feet and hands in wild abandon, in front of brides? This is an image to rival the gory images of her death that the text leaves us with. In II Kings 9:3 Elisha instructs one of his disciples to travel to Ramot-Gilad to anoint Jehu as the new king of Israel. The instruction ends with the odd addition to \u201cthen open the door and flee without delay.\u201d The disciple follows Elisha\u2019s instructions- although with additional detail about the destruction of the house of Ahab. In 9:10, the prophet makes sure that we know that the disciple opens the door and flees, following the curious additional instruction of Elisha. Why would this odd instruction be part of the message to Jehu? If it was simply that Elisha feared that his disciple was in mortal danger promoting a coup headed by a top general of Israel, then why send the disciple in the first place? Furthermore, once the disciple sees that Jehu does not immediately call for his arrest or death for his treasonous act, why would he need to flee?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps the reason is that Elisha was trying to send an additional message with the actions of his disciple and not just his words. Through his action the disciple is both anointing Jehu and also quickly running away.\u00a0 The message to Jehu is that God has anointed you as king of Israel, but he can just as easily \u201crun away\u201d from his support of you. In fact, we see at the end of the 10<\/span>th<\/span> chapter that this is precisely what happens. Even though Jehu commits to fulfill the instruction of the disciple in destroying the house of Ahab, Jezebel, and Baal, he does not fully commit. God then removes his protection from Jehu, and we are told in II Kings 10:30-32 that God allows for the reduction of Israel by the capture of the Transjordan territories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this way we see that a prophet's actions are just as important as his or her words.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In our chapter, Jehu is anointed as the tenth king of the northern kingdom of Israel by an unnamed disciple of Elisha. According to Seder Olam 18, this disciple of Elisha was none other than the prophet Jonah. Though Jehu\u2019s anointing was done in private, when Jehu makes his becoming king known to his officers they immediately \u201csound the horn and proclaim, \u2018Jehu is king!\u2019\u201d (II Kings 9:1-13). Jehu then kills his predecessor, Jehoram, his mother Jezabel and the rest of the idolatrous House of Omri. All this is done to honor the God of Israel, since the Omrides had promoted the worship of Baal.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Talmud Bavli Sanhedrin 102a goes on to add that Jehu was a very righteous person. This is supported by the verse \u201cThe Lord said to Jehu, \u2018Because you have acted well and done what was pleasing to Me, having carried out all that I desired upon the House of Ahab, four generations of your descendants shall occupy the throne of Israel\u2019\u201d (II Kings 10:30). But this is immediately followed by the statement \u201cBut Jehu was not careful to follow the Teaching of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart; he did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit\u201d (II Kings 10:31). This is exemplified by Jehu\u2019s devious proclamation: \u201cAhab served Baal little; Jehu shall serve him much!\u201d (I Kings 10:18). Indeed, Jehu did not put an end to the worship of the golden calves that Jeroboam had set up at Bethel and Dan. Because of Jehu\u2019s failure to serve the God of Israel \u201cwith all his heart\u201d, toward the end of his reign, \u201cthe Lord began to reduce Israel. And Hazael harassed them throughout the territory of Israel\u201d (II Kings 10:32).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Significantly, Jehu is mentioned in Assyrian records, notably on the \u201cBlack Obelisk\u201d discovered in 1846 in the excavations at ancient Nimrud and preserved in the British Museum. In this bas-relief, King Jehu of Israel is depicted as kissing the ground in front of Shalmaneser III and presenting a gift. In the inscription on this obelisk, Jehu\u2019s tribute is dated 841 BCE. It is the earliest preserved archaeological depiction of any Israelite.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On my first day of work at American Jewish University, I was given a piece of advice that I carry with me every single day. The founding president of the University, Rabbi David Lieber told me, \u201cYou can get anything done so long as you don\u2019t worry about who gets the credit.\u201d Such a simple insight, yet so counter to the way most of us navigate the world.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

How often have you heard people think about their legacy? What will be remembered? What can they leave behind when they no longer walk this earth? Or, how often do people attempt to smooth their own career trajectory by trying to assure that they get proper credit (and remuneration or promotion) for a good idea or a successful venture?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is human nature to fight our own mortality, and the fact that the world will move on without us, by trying to create a benefit for ourselves in this lifetime and a memorial to our efforts after we are gone.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And yet, it saps us of the moment we are in, and it desiccates the future awaiting us. By diverting our energy into \u201cowning\u201d an idea, a product, a service, we don\u2019t\u2019 focus on the idea itself. By putting our sense of compensation in some future credit, we ignore the simple joy of making something good happen today, now.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This chapter contains the antidote. In a struggle to bring meaning in his time, Elisha dispatches a \u201cyoung prophet\u201d to bring a revelation of God\u2019s will to a would-be usurper and future king. The anonymous young prophet finds Jehu, the son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi, and anoints him as the new king, issues a verbal confirmation of the prophesy, and then flees. Scripture never identifies the prophet\u2019s name or identity. Like most angels in the Tanakh, he is there for the moment and we never hear from him again.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet he changes the course of Israel\u2019s history, and he merits to carry God\u2019s message. Quite a significance, even though we don\u2019t remember his name.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And in the end, the names don\u2019t mean much. We all walk down streets named after people who were bigshots in their own time, and now we know the name as a street, or a car, or a school. But we still know nothing about the person who used to have that name.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Names don\u2019t matter much, and our personal identity will join the flow of humanity across time. Not the drop, but the river, counts. What matters is not who we are, but what we achieve. Jehu is presented by the text as the agent of God, but further examination raises some disquieting questions about him. Why does Elisha abdicate his mission and instead select a subordinate to anoint Jehu? After all, Elisha traveled to Damascus to instigate Hazael's rise to power (II Kings 8:7-15). If the national prophet can travel unhindered and unharmed to appoint an enemy king, what impedes his active role in this instance? Furthermore, the subordinate prophet's instruction \"to flee without delay\" (9:3) suggests highly irregular behavior; even Jehu's colleagues observe the prophet's erratic behavior and presume that he is insane! What do we make of this unorthodox conduct?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Abarbanel offers an explanation: [Elisha] could not travel to Ramoth Gilead to anoint Jehu, as the excitement of his arrival would disclose the event [of Jehu's anointing.] He thus performed the act by proxy, giving instructions to one of the prophets who sat before him...to enact [the anointing] in an inner room so that the king not be informed...and to ensure that the prophet not be endangered; and he commanded [the prophet] to flee so that he not remain there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Treason is risky business. One cannot openly spur a loyal army officer to revolt without endangering one's life. In our story, the prophet is about to interrupt a meeting of the joint chiefs of staff \u2014 a group of men who are by definition loyal to the king \u2014 and to anoint one of them as a traitor, a mutineer against his commander-in-chief, the king.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We appreciate Abarbanel's point. Elisha's public profile precludes him from inciting the rebellion. The youthful prophet, who rushes in and exits quickly, may just get away, even if the plan backfires. The privacy of the anointing affords Jehu the option of keeping the clandestine message secret for the time being, allowing him time to think and plan. His initial response when questioned about the prophet's purpose \u2014 \"You know the man and the way he speaks\" (II Kings 9:11) \u2014 feigns refusal to divulge the secret, but in fact, it invites further inquiry. When his comrades press him for the truth, he readily reveals the prophet's purpose. An ad hoc coronation is staged, the event so hurried that the nearby staircase is turned into an impromptu podium on which to \"enthrone\" Jehu. The group's spontaneous backing of the mutiny is indicative of a discernable dissatisfaction with King Jehoram. Possibly this was a pervasive sentiment in the military after Jehoram failed in his military campaign against Moab (ch. 3), and was defeated in his conflict with Aram (8:28-29). The unanimous and instantaneous response of these high ranking officers reveals a deep loss of confidence in the national leadership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The group of prophets, bonded together in a kind of guild, were known for working themselves into ecstatic states, often with the help of musical instruments, as the two stories of Saul among the prophets in 1 Samuel illustrate. Calling a prophet a madman, then, makes perfect sense, and that equation occurs elsewhere in biblical literature.<\/p>\r\n

  1. Meshuggy<\/em>! The disciple is called \u201cthat madman\u201d (meshuga\u2019) by the officers in verse 11,\u00a0 and the lookout in verse 20 recognizes Jehu from his unrestrained horsemanship: \u201cit looks like the driving of Jehu son of Nimshi, who drives wildly\u201d (be-shiga\u2019on).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Peace<\/em>. The word \u201cpeace\u201d appears 9 times in this chapter, which opens one of the bloodiest rebellions in Israelite history.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Jezebel<\/em>. Daughter of royalty herself, she responds haughtily (bravely?) to Jehu\u2019s rebellion: \u201cshe painted her eyes with kohl and dressed her hair, and she looked out of the window,\u201d (30), and so once its clear who\u2019s queen, she challenges Jehu.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Zimri - short reign, long memory.<\/em> Zimri was king for barely a week, but he remains in the collective consciousness as the rebel who failed, disastrously. That\u2019s why Jezebel says to Jehu: \u201cIs all well, Zimri, murderer of your master?\u201d (31). She\u2019s saying - you\u2019re a murderer, and a failure. Sad. And if it wasn\u2019t clear, she\u2019s not really concerned about his welfare. (But of course she miscalculated her power and support, and was thrown under the bus, or the horses\u2026).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. Payback time for Naboth<\/em>. Jehu, very consciously and proactively, brings about the death of Jehoram, so that it will be crystal clear, that this is a direct punishment for the murder of Naboth. \u201c\u2018I swear, I have taken note of the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons yesterday\u2014declares the LORD. And I will requite you in this plot\u2014declares the LORD.\u2019 So pick him up and throw him unto the plot in accordance with the word of the LORD\u201d (26).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  6. Self-awareness, or persuasion<\/em>? Jehu emphasizes time and again that he is acting according to God\u2019s word. Who is he trying to convince - and why?
