Chapter 6 compares the Northern Kingdom and the Southern Kingdom. The Northern Kingdom is under siege. There’s a very harsh famine in the city. Food is scarce and the people are desperate. Verses 26-30 tell the story of a woman who approaches the king. She explains that she and her friend entered into an agreement one night. On one night, they would kill and eat her child, and then on the next day they would kill and eat her friend’s child. The question itself is extremely heartbreaking. The king has no words and simply cries.

Two women approaching the king in a disagreement over a dead child and a live child is reminiscent of the story from I Kings 3. There, two prostitutes approach Solomon with the question about the identity of a baby. This story is held up as a high point of the Southern Kingdom and of Solomon’s wisdom. While that story is also heartbreaking, it seems to have a happy ending.

The story in the North is the exact opposite. There is no happy ending. The Northern Kingdom is in such disarray that the trial is not about which baby should live, but which baby should die. The story of the siege of Samaria also foreshadows events in the Southern Kingdom. Hundreds of years later, the North is already expelled. The last city of the Southern Kingdom, Jerusalem, will be encircled, and there will also be a strong famine. As the prophet Jeremiah writes in Lamentations 4:10, women were forced to boil their children in order to survive. So, while, at first glance, chapter 6 seems to show how great the Southern Kingdom was, it is also a warning for what the Southern Kingdom can, and will, become, if it does not follow the right path.

image: created with Dall-E 2, AI illustrator

https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643bb4ef65dec-643bb4ef65ded2kings6-two-women-two-babies.png.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643bb4ef65dec-643bb4ef65ded2kings6-two-women-two-babies.png-150x150.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643bb4ef65dec-643bb4ef65ded2kings6-two-women-two-babies.png-300x300.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643bb4ef65dec-643bb4ef65ded2kings6-two-women-two-babies.png-768x768.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643bb4ef65dec-643bb4ef65ded2kings6-two-women-two-babies.png.png
1536x1536":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643bb4ef65dec-643bb4ef65ded2kings6-two-women-two-babies.png.png","1536x1536-width":1024,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643bb4ef65dec-643bb4ef65ded2kings6-two-women-two-babies.png.png","2048x2048-width":1024,"2048x2048-height":1024
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643bb4ef65dec-643bb4ef65ded2kings6-two-women-two-babies.png.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643bb4ef65dec-643bb4ef65ded2kings6-two-women-two-babies.png-420x420.png
And a story of a trial involving two mothers, a dead baby and a live one - He showed him the spot; and he cut off a stick and threw it in, and he made the ax head float” (6:6). An obvious question is, why did Elisha need to fashion a brand new “stick” when he could have used the one from which the metal head had been dislodged? The consensus of commentators—medieval and modern alike—is that this magnified the miraculous nature of the process. According to JPS's translated version, Elisha said: "Do you see — that murderer has sent someone to cut off my head!" (32). It seems that this king had already committed a crime of murder before. Prophet Elijah blamed King Ahab of Israel for committing a crime of murder: "Thus said the LORD: Would you murder and take possession?" (1 Kings 21, 19).

According to the original Hebrew version, Prophet Elisha's words were not "that murderer" but "that son of a murderer" (32). The first was Ahaziah, and the second was Jehoram.

A second clue lies in the Kings book's chronology. The Bible tells about King Ahab's death six chapters ago (1 Kings 22, 40) and about King Ahaziah's death five chapters ago (2 Kings 1, 17). Jehoram succeeded Ahaziah as king for he had no son (2 Kings 1, 17) and reigned until Commander Jehu killed him (2 Kings 9, 23). It seems that the stories about the days of his majesty King Jehoram of Israel are told along the first nine chapters of 2 Kings.

Therefore the It is told that Serah, the daughter of Asher, survived from that generation, and she showed Moses the grave of Joseph. She said to him. "The Egyptians put him in a metal coffin which they sunk into the Nile." So Moses went and stood by the Nile. He took a tablet of gold on which he engraved the Tetragrammaton, and throwing it into the Nile, he cried out and said, "Joseph, son of Jacob! The oath to redeem His children which God swore to our father Abraham has reached its fulfillment. If you come up, well and good. But if not, we shall be guiltless of your oath." Immediately, Joseph's coffin came to the surface and Moses took it.
And you need not be surprised at this. Behold it says, "As one was cutting down a tree.... And the man of God said, 'Where did it fall?'" (II Kings 6:5-6). Now, if Elisha, the disciple of Elijah, could make iron come to the surface, how much more so could Moses, the master of Elijah, do it! (Mekhilta DeRabbi Yishmael, Beshalah; Tosefta Sota 4:3)

On the one hand, the midrash is suggesting that Elisha bears Moses' prophetic powers and employ the selfsame technique.

Moreover, it is possible that this midrashic analogy develops a wider connection between the two stories. The story that follows Moses extracting Joseph’s casket is the crossing of the Reed Sea. There we witness the pursuit by "All the chariot horses of Pharaoh, [and] his horsemen...” (Ex. 13:9-10), and Israel's terror at the sight of their military forces. Moses responds, "Have no fear! Stand by, and witness the deliverance which the Lord will work for you today" (Ex. 13:12).

The same pattern and language is manifest in the very next story of our chapter. The king of Aram sends a force of "horses and chariots...." Elisha's assistant sees the horses and chariots and cries out. Elisha responds, "Have no fear! Those who are with us are more than those who are with them" (II Kings 6:14-16).

In both stories we see an attack of horses and chariots, a cry of fright, a reassurance by the prophet, and miraculous salvation which eliminates the military threat. The intertextual connection is not merely the miraculous raising of metallic objects from a riverbed. For Elisha, as for Moses, the force of horses and chariots need not be intimidating — because after all, it is not the laws of nature, but rather the power of God, that controls nature.'

Alex Israel, II Kings: In a Whirlwind, Maggid Books, 2019, A Floating Ax-Head

Alex Israel -
