At first, he is high and mighty, belittling the powers of Elisha and the rivers of the Land of Israel. But when he condescends to obey the prophet’s advice and is miraculously healed by bathing seven times in the river Jordan, he becomes a changed man. Na’aman reverentially acknowledges that the God of Israel is the one and only God and promises never to bring a sacrifice to an idol again.

Yet his transformation is not quite complete. For he begs Elisha’s forgiveness for the accommodation that he feels he will need to make with his king’s’ pagan faith, saying:

But may the LORD pardon your servant for this: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow low in worship there, and he is leaning on my arm so that I must bow low in the temple of Rimmon... He craves Elisha’s indulgence in advance, to which the prophet replies curtly “go in peace.”

Interestingly, this story is the source for the halachah that a non-Jew who has accepted God and the seven Noachide Laws is not required to give up his life for the sake of kiddush hashem, sanctifying God’s name. Whereas a Jew ought to rather die than worship idols, Elisha does not forbid Aram’s ceremonial subterfuge. The Talmud (Sanhedrin 74b) infers from this that as a non-Jew his compromise is allowed. Only Jews are commanded to love God so much that even in the face of death their love should not waver.

But what should we make of Elisha’s terse, two-word reply in response to Naaman’s forty-six word speech. It is hardly a ringing endorsement. Abarbanel writes that “go in peace (or wholeness)” is in fact an implicit warning against Naaman’s proposed plan of pretense. “He was saying, don’t do this because it will be a stumbling block with your master; they will say that you converted and throw you out.”

We may recall that Abarbanel lived in Spain during the fifteenth century, when many Jews outwardly converted to Christianity, but inwardly and privately attempted to remain Jews. Abarbanel knew well the dangers of a double religious life. Hundreds of these Marannos were arrested, interrogated, tortured and killed by the inquisition despite trying to conceal their faith. Ultimately, the remnant of Spanish Jewry was expelled in 1492. It is fascinating that Abarbanel appears to imagine a similar fate for Na’aman.

Image: Cure of Naaman in the River Jordan, c. 1150 (British The king of Aram was incapable of imagining a scenario in which the prophet would not be fundamentally subordinate to the king, and so he sought the prophet by means of the latter. By contrast, the king of Israel couldn't conceive of a situation in which the prophet would be responsive to his control, and so he failed even to entertain the prospect of appealing to Elisha!

Elisha hears that the king has torn his clothes. The king had asked: "Am I God to deal death and give life, that this fellow writes to me to cure a man of his leprosy?" And indeed, as God's envoy, Elisha's role is precisely to mediate life and death: The leper is equivalent to the dead (as implied by Num. 12:12),8 and in the selfsame manner that our previous chapter narrates Elisha's resuscitating a dead boy, here he will restore life to Naaman.

Alex Israel, II Kings: In a Whirlwind, Maggid Books, 2019, The Transformation of Naaman

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Alex-Israel-2_kings_cover.jpg","1536x1536-width":1443,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Alex-Israel-2_kings_cover.jpg","2048x2048-width":1711,"2048x2048-height":1821
As opposed to Aram, an Israelite prophet is not subordinate to a king.
