In the Plagues Project<\/a> you will find more than 30 videos, each offering a unique perspective on Judaism and plagues.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Plague is, certainly, a timely topic to all of us these days, both regarding the corona virus that is still with us, and of course, in their centrality during their Passover Seders. We hope that The Plagues Project can help expand our community's thinking on this important topic by showcasing the variety of ways that Jews have thought about Plagues - both the Biblical Plagues and plagues throughout history - for the last 3,000 years.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

We believe that a plurality of voices can be brought together to explore the vast canon of Jewish literature. Tradition tells us that the Torah has \u201cseventy faces,\u201d and we look forward to exploring them with you. Bringing together these varied perspectives was made possible by a collaboration between BINA: The Jewish Movement for Social Change<\/a>, Judaism Unbound<\/a>, 929 English<\/a>, The Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto<\/a>, and jewishLIVE<\/a>. This project is being launched in partnership with the Hillel\u00a0Office Of Innovation (OOI)<\/a>, which is publishing a series of essays reflecting on living during the period of the Coronavirus, titled Torah in a Time of Plague <\/em>(Ben Yehuda Press, March 2021).<\/p>\r\n

Chapter 15 began with the rule of Abijam, the son of Rehoboam. Abijam was an evil king, but God made it clear that the Davidic line would continue because of the righteousness of David.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jeroboam\u2019s line does not get equal protection. Baasha from Issachar assassinates Nadav and becomes king, but Baasha\u2019s line is also short-lived. It turns out that God\u2019s promise of an everlasting line will not continue at all in the Northern kingdom. Jehu the prophet foretells the end of the line of Baasha, just like the line of Jeroboam which Baasha ended. Baasha\u2019s son Ela only reigns for two years before Zimri, a captain in his chariot corp, assassinates him.\u00a0 Zimri\u2019s reign does not even last a week before Omri, another general, surrounds Ela\u2019s palace where Zimri is holed up. Seeing the writing on the wall, Zimri burns the palace down around him. The text concludes Zimri\u2019s reign with the oft repeated line: \u201cbecause of the sins which he committed and caused Israel to commit, doing what was displeasing to the LORD and following the ways of Jeroboam\u2026.\u201d (verse 19).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What could Zimri have possibly done during his Scaramucci-length reign? Radak, Metzudat David, and Abarbanel explain that this verse includes the bad acts of Zimri during his time as the chariot captain for Baasha. Malbim is not convinced that Zimri would be punished for what he did before he was king. Instead, Malbim posits that Zimri was planning to continue the evil acts and was just cut short of actually following through with everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But how could someone be punished for acts they did not commit? The answer to this question may be in the next two verses:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The other events of Zimri\u2019s reign, and the treason which he committed, are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of Israel. Then the people of Israel split into two factions: a part of the people followed Tibni son of Ginath to make him king, and the other part followed Omri (verses 20-21).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps Zimri\u2019s sin was that he perpetuated the chaos of the Northern kingdom. Zimri planned a coup against the king, which threw the country into a civil war-like chaos with two competing generals fighting over the crown, ending in the reign of Omri, founder of the most notorious line of the North. Zimri was only king for a week, but he could have brought stability to the North. Instead, he burned the whole thing down around him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Translation is always an interpretation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Verse 18 in our chapter is translated by JPS: \"When Zimri saw that the town was taken, he went into the citadel of the royal palace and burned down the royal palace over himself. And so he died\".<\/span><\/p>\r\n

According to this\u00a0 translation and interpretation, King Zimri commited suicide. But it is not the only possible translation nor the only possible interpretation of this verse.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Verse 18 can be translated alternatively: \"When Zimri saw that the town was taken (by Omri), he (Zimri) went into the citadel of the royal palace. So he (Omri) burned down the royal palace over him (Zimri). And so he (Zimri) died\".<\/span><\/p>\r\n

According to the alternative interpretation, King Zimri tried to survive behind the walls of the most secure place in the capital \u2013 the citadel of the royal palace of Tirzah. Maybe Zimri hoped that Omri would not dare to ruin such a beauty (Song of Songs 6, 4) as the Germans in World War 2 hoped no one would bomb beautiful Dresden. The chapters we are about to study chronicle the epic struggle between two personalities \u2014 Ahab, king of Israel, and his nemesis, the great prophet Elijah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ahab and Jezebel's Baal worship constitutes the focal point of the tension, but the medium that generates much of the drama is a drought. Elijah withholds rainfall to pressure Ahab and his nation to abandon their commitment to Baal. Why is rain chosen as the means of influencing Ahab? Is there a connection between Baal and rain?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Baal is the rain or storm god, responsible for fertility and agricultural success. The Talmud (Moed Katan 2a-b, Bava Batra 28a) even refers to a field irrigated exclusively by rain as a <\/span>sedeh Baal<\/span><\/em>, a \"Baal field.\" The primary agricultural and economic drawback in Israel and Phoenicia \u2014 two lands essentially on the same geographical continuum \u2014 is lack of rain. With no great rivers to provide irrigation, the land of Israel relies solely on rainfall. which is unpredictable and sporadic; hence the enormous attraction to Baal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Torah asserts that total commitment to God's laws is the only means of guaranteeing rain. Baal worship, however, ostensibly offered an alternative guarantee of rainfall, and thus economic stability and prosperity. The desperate Israelite farmer, whose crops and livelihood were threatened by drought, might have felt that a visit to the local priest of Baal was an excusable religious infraction if it were to ensure his family's survival.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We should not dismiss Baal as merely a figurine or molten image \u2014 whole worlds of mythology bolstered its worship. Baal constituted the male representative of the rain god. Its female counterpart, Ashera, took two forms: a tree or a female image or figurine, frequently a pregnant or nursing woman. The theory was that Baal (the rain) fertilized Ashera (the tree - see 1 Kings 18:19).This union of male and female led to cultic sexual rites in the temples of Baal; the sexual union of male and female temple prostitutes (<\/span>kadesh <\/span><\/em>and <\/span>kedesha<\/span><\/em>) would simulate and stimulate the god's bringing the desired rainfall and its ensuing abundance (Deut. 23:18-19). Thus, we can appreciate the connection made by the Torah (for example, in Leviticus 18) between idolatry and illicit sexual practices. This background may help us understand the allure of this deity, which seemed to exhibit an almost magnetic attraction for the Jewish people from the time of the Judges (Judges 2:11) through the Temple's destruction (II Kings 23:4).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During 2005, Bregman served as the Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at Harvard University and was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He also has served as Forchheimer Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. The conclusion of our chapter relates the beginning of the reign of Ahab over the Northern Kingdom of Israel (I Kings 16:28-33). We are immediately told that he \u201cdid more to vex the Lord, the God of Israel, than all the kings of Israel who preceded him\u201d (verse 33).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mishnah Sanhedrin 10:2 includes Ahab among those three kings and four commoners who have no share in the world to come. According to the early medieval mystical Midrash Konen, Ahab is confined in the fifth rung of Hell along with 10,000 myriads of heathen, under the supervision of the Angel Oniel, who flogs all of them but Ahab, because his forefathers answered \u201cWe will do and we will obey\u201d at the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai (see Exodus 24:7).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

An extended discussion of King Ahab in Talmud Bavli Sanhedrin 102b begins with a midrashic etymology of his name in Hebrew, Ahav, which can be understood as made up of two words: \u201cAh\u201d-Woe! and \u201cAv\u201d \u2013 Father indicating that Ahab was a \u201cWoeful Father\u201d to idolatry. Ahab\u2019s sins of idol worship were even worse than those of Jeroboam. According to Yehudah Halevi in his Kuzari 4:14, the prophets of Ahab were the prophets of Baal and their worshippers were absolute idolaters, while the prophets of Jeroboam were the prophets of the God of Israel. The two golden calves that Jeroboam set up at Bethel and Dan were intended solely for the worship of God, while Ahab\u2019s altars were intended solely for the worship of Baal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Talmud, referring to Hosea 12:12 \u201ctheir altars were heaped on the furrows of the field\u201d, goes on to state that there was not a single furrow in Israel on which Ahab did not set up an idol and bow down to it. The Talmud then suggests that, though Ahab was so evil, he merited to reign for twenty-two years, because he honored\u00a0 the Torah by refusing to give it to Ben-Hadad (see I Kings 20:9) \u2013 and the Torah that was given in Hebrew which uses an alphabet of twenty-two letters. Because he supported Torah Scholars with his vast wealth, half his many sins were forgiven. Finally, the Talmud suggests that Ahab did not deserve a place in the world to come because he wrote on the doors of Samaria, his capital: \u201cAhab has denied the God of Israel\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Significantly, King Ahab of Israel is mentioned by name as \"A-ha-ab-bu Sir-ila-a-a\" in the Kurkh Monolith of the Assyrian King, Shalmaneser III (859\u2013824 BC), which includes a description of the Battle of Qarqar fought in 853 BCE.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

King Ahab lives on as the main protagonist in Herman Melville's novel, Moby-Dick (1851). There Ahab is portrayed as the monomaniacal captain of the whaling ship Pequod. The novel is the story of Ahab\u2019s obsessive pursuit of the elusive white whale, Moby-Dick, who, for Ahab, is the very personification of cosmic Evil.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We read at the close of the previous chapter that Jeroboam died and was succeeded by his son Nadav, who ruled for two years and followed in the evil footsteps of his father and grandfather (15: 25-26). He then became the victim of a conspiracy (<\/span>kesher<\/span><\/em>, see 15:27) that placed on the throne of the Northern Kingdom a \u201cman of Issachar\u201d named Baasha, who exacted from the House of Jeroboam the precise vengeance that had been foretold (in chapter 13) by the man of God and confirmed by Ahijah of Shiloh (chapter 14). In spite of that, \u201cHe did what was displeasing to the LORD; he followed the ways of Jeroboam and the sins which he caused Israel to commit\u201d (15:34).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When our chapter opens, another prophet, Jehu ben Hanani, prophesied that Baasha is about to suffer the very same fate he meted out to Nadav and Jeroboam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the town shall be devoured by dogs, and anyone who dies in the open country shall be eaten by the birds of the sky; for the LORD has spoken. (14:11)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

Anyone belonging to Baasha who dies in the town shall be devoured by dogs, and anyone belonging to him who dies in the open country shall be devoured by the birds of the sky. (16:4)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n

Even conspiracy (<\/span>kesher<\/span><\/em>, see 16:9, 16, 20) struck again as Elah, Baasha\u2019s son, was slain by Zimri, one of his officers. Zimri, after exacting the prophesied vengeance on the House of Baasha, became the victim of a conspiracy himself as the people chose a general named Omri to ascend the throne. Omri besieged the royal palace at Tirzah and Zimri (to spite Omri?) burned it down about himself after ruling for just one week.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Omri eventually moved his capital to Samaria (Shomron), which became an epithet for the Northern Kingdom (and remains in use to this very day to designate Jewish-held territory within the northern West Bank), and established a new dynasty whose most famous (or infamous) member, Ahab, makes his appearance just as our chapter is about to close.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

16:7 \u201cAnd indeed through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani the word of the Lord had come against Baasha and against his house, because of the evil he had done in the eyes of the Lord to vex Him by the work of his hands, to become like the house of Jeroboam, and because he had struck him down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This clause is a little cryptic. The initial \u201che\u201d has to be Baasha, and so the person he struck down is Jeroboam. Since the destruction of the house of Jeroboam for the offense of idolatry was announced in a divinely authorized prophecy, one might have thought that there was no sin in Baasha\u2019s killing Jeroboam and all the males of his house. Perhaps the writer means to suggest that ruthless murder, even if it is the enactment of deserved retribution, remains ruthless murder, especially if the motives of the killer are far from noble, as appears to be the case with Baasha. In all these reports, the writer manifestly struggles with putting forth a theological explanation for political upheavals. The history of the kingdom of Judah, whatever its vulnerabilities and cultic derelictions, reflects relative stability: Asa\u2019s reign lasts for forty years, while a series of kings in the rival kingdom of Israel are assassinated, with one regnal span as little as two years and another only seven days. One might infer that this instability goes back to the fact that the northern kingdom was established by a usurper, Jeroboam, in contrast to the Davidic dynasty in the south with its claim of divine election and the heroic figure of David as its iconic founder. The writer, however, feels constrained to explain that each murdered monarch perished because of his idolatrous ways.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Israel and Judah - spot the differences\u2026<\/em> In the Kingdom of Israel - rapid kingly turnover, rebellions, and regime instability, as compared with the stable kingship of Asa, the Judean king, who rules concurrent to all the dramas in our chapter. This comparison reflects a deep difference: despite their sinfulness, the kings of Judah will not be deposed, on account of the promise to David that his dynasty will rule continuously.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. What do we actually know about the various kings and their reigns?<\/em> Not much. Mainly, that they continued with \u201cJeroboam\u2019s sin,\u201d until Ahab, who committed new sins - that is the cult of Baal and Asherah. About Omri, we know that he was active in settlement, even building a new city, upon which the sages later looked with favor\u00a0 .<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. If you drink, don\u2019t rule<\/em>. Baasha found his death at Tirzah, when he was \u201cdrinking himself drunk\u201d (verse 9). Perhaps Zimri found his opening to kill him when alcohol was in charge, and not Baasha.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. The generals are revolting<\/em>. Zimri was in charge of half of the chariotry, meaning the general in charge of half of the armored corps. Omri was the chief of staff. Who was Tibni son of Ginath? Not clear. But he lasted four years opposite\u00a0 Omri, so apparently he too had his military supporters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. What\u2019s the connection?<\/em> The chapter, which had been devoted exclusively to the kings and their doings, ends with some information about a private citizen named Hiel, who built up Jericho in the days of Ahab. It was through him that the curse that Joshua had put on anyone who would build up Jericho was carried out. All his sons died: \u201cHe laid its foundations at the cost of Abiram his first-born, and set its gates in place at the cost of Segub his youngest\u201d (verse 34). How does this connect to the story?
