He just starts talking. This opening verse is in stark contrast to everything else that will happen to the most famous prophet in the Books of Kings. Elijah warns Ahab that the land will be afflicted by drought, and is gone. God brings him first to a river where the birds and nature feed him. After the river dries up, Elijah travels to a place called Zarephath, to live with a woman and her only son. The woman, also beset by the drought, tells Elijah that she does not have any food to give him. Elijah promises her that God will provide, and (foreshadowing the Chanukah story) her small cruise of oil lasts for much much longer.

One day, the woman’s son gets very ill and dies. She cries out to Elijah that such a holy visitor brought the eye of God into her house and punished her for her sins. Elijah prays to God and resurrects the child.

And the woman answered Elijah, 'Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD is truly in your mouth’” (verse 24).

Elijah appeared at her house out of nowhere. Her small cruse of oil and jug of flour lasted for months on end; the drought did not harm her. Those were not reason enough to believe that Elijah was a man of God? Yes, resurrecting her son is an awesome miracle, but these other miracles should have already made her a believer.

Some commentators think this miracle impressed her the most because Elijah himself performed it. Elijah informed her that the oil and flour would last, but she felt that another prophet may have told him that. Abarbanel believes that the woman did think that Elijah was a prophet due to the oil, but this level of miracle meant that Elijah was on a higher level that made him a man that God connects with directly. Malbim has a similar idea, but points to the flour and oil as suspect prophet work. The woman was not sure if Elijah was performing magic for the initial miracle, but a magician could not bring a boy back from the dead. Only a man of God could do that.

Another reason could be the difference between the two miracles. The oil and flour helped Elijah as well, but Elijah did not need to save her son. The selfless act was the first tip off that this was no ordinary man. The second is that the flour and oil just happened, but Elijah prayed for the boy to be resurrected. Seeing that God answered his prayers was the final act that proved to her that he was a man of Thematically, it certainly seems manna-like how the widow’s food is miraculously replenished, just as Elijah prophecies. There are tell-tale linguistic references here too (an unusual word for jar, as well as references to baked wafers and oil). The manna link serves to deepen our admiration for the widow—in this case for her faith that Elijah’s assurances that God will sustain them through the famine.

This link also affords insightful commentary on the manna episode itself. When we compare the manna and widow stories, we see that the widow does not complain until after her son dies of famine whereas Israel complains of famine when there was none (Exodus 16:3). We also see that she trusts that God will miraculously provide food whereas Israel worried at first that they needed to hoard the manna. The widow story thus shines a critical light on Israel’s behavior during the exodus and a favorable light on God’s generosity and patience.

Perhaps the deepest insights come from pondering how our chapter twice goes out of its way to describe the widow as gathering wood. The key word here, lekoshesh, is used in only three other occasions in the Hebrew Bible, and in only one other instance in reference to gathering wood: the case of the man who is put to death for gathering wood on the Sabbath (Numbers 15:32-36). This comparison illuminates the faithlessness of the wood gatherer: he should have assumed God would continue to provide wood. And it also points to his selfishness: if the widow can share her life-sustaining private property, he can refrain from “raiding the commons” while everyone else is resting.

By adding just a few additional words to link the two stories, we are led to marvel anew at the widow’s virtuous character and to appreciate the fragility of the social cooperation that sustains the Shabbat.

Image: Woman Carrying Twigs, Munkacsy, 19th C.

Elaboration on ideas in this essay may be found in the essays “Between Shabbat and Lynch Mobs”; “How to Curtail Pernicious Social Competition: The Legacy of Zelophehad and his Daughters”; and “Why Do We Deserve God’s Favor?” published at the Lehrhaus online journal.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings17-wood-gatherer.jpg","1536x1536-width":1000,"1536x1536-height":1277,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings17-wood-gatherer.jpg","2048x2048-width":1000,"2048x2048-height":1277
Why is it important to know she was gathering wood? On the other hand, he has no back story: he bursts upon the scene in the very first verse of our chapter and launches into his condemnation of Ahab without as much as an introduction, save for the spare remarks we have used as the title for these comments: “Elijah the Tishbite, an inhabitant of Gilead.” How much more can we presume to know?

First of all, a closer look at the original text is in order, lest we lose sight of the fact that Elijah was both a toshav (Hebrew for inhabitant) of the Gilead region and a tishbi—arguably, a resident of a placed called Toshav, perhaps situated within the Gilead.

Next, we look at the Gilead itself, which we know—from both the Torah (Numbers 32) and the Book of Joshua (22)—to have been settled by the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half of Manasseh, making it likely—though far from certain—that Elijah belonged to one of those tribes.

With these data in hand, let us now see how Radak performed the identification.

Our Sages were divided over his tribal affiliation. The identification with Phineas is based on the quality of zealousness they shared: Elijah: “I have been truly zealous for the Lord” (1 Kings 19:10) and Phineas: “Because he was zealous On the one hand, the raven's large size makes it ideal for transporting food. Furthermore, Noah also sends out a raven in search of a means of subsistence. Yet this parallel may point to a shared trait of Noah and Elijah — their extreme disengagement from society.

However, the raven is an "unclean" bird (Lev. 11:15) and widely viewed in folklore as cruel. Psalms 147:9 speaks of the "offspring of the raven that call out," and Job 38:41 adds that the raven fails to feed its young, leaving them hungry. Why does God choose this callous bird as His messenger? Malbim explains: [God] orchestrates His sustenance through ravens, which are cruel by nature, so [Elijah] should remember that he similarly has been cruel to the nation, killing them by famine.

Rashi adopts a similar approach regarding the drying of the water in the wadi: "The wadi dried up" (17:7) — So [Elijah] would understand the need for rain...for it was severe in God's eyes that Israel was dying by famine.

These commentators view Elijah as actively withholding the rainfall; God utilizes a variety of media to indicate to him that the time has come to exercise compassion. Elijah, however, appears to be impervious God's prompting. This line of thinking is valid regarding the widow in Zarephath as well. In the introductory scene, we are witness to a dreadful image, as the widow collects a few twigs in order to cook her last meager rations — a little flour and oil. Elijah arrives and requests water, then food. He adds insult to injury by insisting that she "make me a small cake first, and bring it to me, and for you and your son afterward" (17:13). How can Elijah be so insensitive? Does he not see the woman's suffering? Even if he knows God will perform a miracle (17:14), is this emotional indifference necessary?

Alex Israel, 1 Kings: Torn in Two, Maggid Books, 2013, Three Years of Drought and Three Miracles

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/alex-israel-kings-1.jpg","1536x1536-width":1020,"1536x1536-height":1304,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/alex-israel-kings-1.jpg","2048x2048-width":1020,"2048x2048-height":1304
God tries to teach him that it’s time for compassion. Moses, of course, is the ultimate and with him they broke the mold. But since then, prophets have brief, cameo roles. They appear, say something specific, and then we don’t hear from them again. Perhaps in really special cases, we listen in as they offer a second prophecy (recall Ahiyah of Shilo, anyone?). Throughout the Books of Kings we will witness swarms of nameless prophets, and false claimants to the title. But Elijah is different than what we’re used to. He’s bigger than all that.

Elijah’s story starts in the middle. No real introduction, no birth and childhood stories, we launch instantly into his struggle against Israel’s most evil power couple, King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. Even his name, Elijah, tells us what the theme of this struggle will be: “Yah is my God.” At this point in Israel’s history, the existence of monotheism is what’s at stake. Others run after a host of idolatrous gods and goddesses, their priests far outnumber the servants of God, and their willingness to spill blood and crush opponents is without limit. Into this struggle, Elijah will throw his full weight, launching an enterprise that continues to this very day.

So we’re very interested in how he establishes his credentials. What kind of God is he serving? What are the core values of this Oneness he seeks?

Significantly, his first encounter is with a starving widow. God commands Elijah to find her and feed her. Widows in antiquity were among the bottom of the social heap, powerless and lacking connections. So the first thing we learn about Elijah’s God is that God’s concern starts from the bottom up: widows matter no less than kings. Elijah performs two miracles on her behalf: producing water for her and her family, and then multiplying loaves of bread so they have ample food to eat. Apparently, this God of monotheism is committed to feeding the thirsty and the hungry.

But it doesn’t stop there. The God of Israel is also the God of life. After a short while, the widow’s boy grows ill and appears to die. When she confronts Elijah, his immediate response is to take the child’s lifeless body into his embrace, to cry out to God, and then to perform the miracle that restores the child to vigor and health.

Sustenance, nourishment, life. Those are the priorities of this unique God. And that elusive uniqueness deserves our devotion to this day. We too must remain the people whose faith culminates in feeding the hungry, caring for the widow, and sustaining life.

Image: Elijah and the The commentaries are divided on this, but the plain sense of the text, as well as the Talmudic sources suggest that the drought was Elijah’s idea.

A Talmudic passage in tractate Sanhedrin (113a) suggests that it was Elijah’s outrage that the rampant idolatry, murder and corruption in Israel was going unpunished that led him to try and wrest the “key of rain” from God and take matters into his own hands. Elijah saw Ahab and Jezebel getting away with murder - and Ba’al worship - and was seized with righteous indignation and zeal for God’s honor. How could it be that biblical promises are ignored with impunity? As the Talmud (Ta’anit 3a) points out, “In this later verse, dew is not mentioned! Why not? Because it never stopped.” Despite Elijah’s threat to stop the dew as well as the rain, in fact, according to the Talmud, the dew never ceased.

Why not? Elijah is a figure who sets great store by the power of withholding and returning the rain to prove that the Torah’s promises are effective and thereby to bring the people back to serving God. Whereas rain in Israel in the winter is sporadic and unpredictable, dew is perennially and reliably present.

The constant care with which God relates to Israel in the mode of dew, with its almost imperceptible gentleness persists even through the most turbulent ups and downs of the relationship.
