Elijah utilizes anger, humor, bombast, and a miracle to convince the people that the worshipers of Baal are mere charlatans. The centerpiece of the event is the fire reigning down from heaven to consume the dampened slaughtered cow and altar. Elijah constructs a multi-layered reference in this display.

Then Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come: ‘Israel shall be your name’ (verse 33).

The text spells out the literal metaphor of taking the twelve stones. Elijah is trying to convey to the people that when the nation is united as twelve tribes together, they form the children of Israel and the basis for the worship of God. Now the kingdom is fractured, like the twelve pieces of Abijah’s robe from a few chapters ago.

But there is another reference here. When Jacob was fleeing from Esau in Genesis 28, he rested for the night and took a stone for a pillow and had his famous ladder dream. The midrash explains that there were many stones that merged into one to form his pillow. This dream also happened at the location of the future Temple. During that dream God promised Jacob,

‘Remember, I am with you: I will protect you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. God is everywhere! Jacob’s reaction must be to God’s promise of protection and return. Jacob was on the run for his life from his brother. He was all alone. Perhaps in this dark moment his faith wavered. God’s message in the dream is that even in the lonely, scary moments, God is there.

Elijah is trying to show the people that even though they have gone astray; even though they are wandering around running from their own demons in a land that may as well be foreign, God is there to protect them. God is everywhere. Does the message resonate? The answer lies in another connection between the two stories.

After Jacob sees the vision and finds God, he tells God that if he goes to his uncle Laban “and I return safe to my father’s house— the LORD shall be my God” (Genesis 28:21). After God sends fire down to consume the altar, the water, the wood, and the sacrifice the people repeat Jacob’s declaration: “The LORD alone is God, The LORD alone is God!” (verse 39). The people see that God was there all along, and like their forefather, they declare their devotion to He brings two bulls as sacrifices, the prophets of Ba’al twice call on their idol for help and twice their pleas are rejected.

Samet points out that when Elijah comes to pray to God, he also offers two prayers, that have linguistic parallels but are very different in their content.

In the first, he says: “Oh Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel! Let it be known today that You are God in Israel and I am your servant” (v.36). Elijah appeals here to the covenantal history of God and Israel and his own special status as God’s prophet.

In the next verse however, Elijah says: “Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you are God” (v. 37). Here there is no reference to God’s particular history with Israel – or with Elijah. The claim at stake here is God’s universal rule.

Samet shows that these prayers parallel two purposes to the trial that Elijah has built into its setup. The first is a sort of clinical test. To resolve the confusion that has arisen over whether Ba’al or God is the true God, Elijah proposes an experiment: whichever God responds to his followers prayers by sending down fire on the altar is the true God. The question is framed empirically, susceptible to a definite, evidenced-based answer, that will be acceptable to all.

However, interwoven with this quasi-scientific procedure are very particularist themes of restoring the loyalty of the people to God, and the fractured unity of Israel. Elijah rebuilds the altar that had been smashed by the prophets of Ba’al, does so “in God’s name,” and gathers together twelve stones symbolising the warring tribes of Israel. Behind the veneer of even-handedness, there is a passionate national-religious purpose.

Elijah’s tragedy is that while the first purpose, the empirical demonstration of God’s existence and power succeeds magnificently, the hoped for healing of the people and return of Israel to God are fleeting, and soon dissipate. By the next chapter, King Ahab, who had appeared impressed by the test results, is pursuing Elijah to kill him once again.

The Talmud identifies the profound duality at work here, interpreting Elijah’s doubled appeal, “Answer me God, answer me” (v.37) thus: “answer me – so that fire will come down from heaven, and answer me that their minds won’t say that it is witchcraft” (Berachot 9a.).

Here, Elijah is painfully aware that incontrovertible “ocular proof” through a miracle is not enough; the perversity of human minds may still interpret the miracle away. Reforming the people's hearts to be whole with God again is a harder task than momentarily demonstrating His reality.

Image: Elijah and Baal’s Priests, Lucas Cranach the Younger, 1545, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings18-elijah-carmel-Lucas.png","1536x1536-width":616,"1536x1536-height":323,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings18-elijah-carmel-Lucas.png","2048x2048-width":616,"2048x2048-height":323
Elijah has a dual task, and a dual goal. His view on the world is black and white: he is absolutely right and terribly wrong; he cannot find his place in the world. The Torah has a very cautious attitude towards zealots. They are like a strong spice: a tiny bit might be ok, but not too much. This is one reason to invite Elijah back to every Pesach seder and every bris so he can gain compassion and respect.

Image: The statue of Elijah from the roof of the St. Elias Monastery, Keren Carmel (Muhraka) / he.wikipedia

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings18-muhraka.jpg","1536x1536-width":800,"1536x1536-height":600,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings18-muhraka.jpg","2048x2048-width":800,"2048x2048-height":600
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings18-muhraka.jpg","1536x1536-width":800,"1536x1536-height":600,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings18-muhraka.jpg","2048x2048-width":800,"2048x2048-height":600
Dr. Moshe Sokolow is Associate Dean of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, Yeshiva University, and teaches a weekly class in parashat hashavu`a at Lincoln Square Synagogue. As a priest, he would have been forbidden to touch a corpse, ergo the child had not actually died but—perhaps—had suffered only respiratory arrest. Of course, an obvious alternative explanation—utilizing the selfsame facts—is to argue that the mitzvah of rescue (piku`ah nefesh) trumped that prohibition.

Our chapter opens in the third year of the drought that Elijah had invoked with God instructing him to “Go, appear before Ahab; then I will send rain upon the earth” (1). Malbim saw them as two related examples of revival:

The opinion of the Sages is well-known: When [Elijah] required the keys of resurrection, he [first] needed to return the keys to the rain… At first, Elijah sealed all the conduits that provided rain and sustenance, so he no longer had the ability to restore life to anything because that necessitated the opening of a conduit. However, while attempting to revive the child, he needed to renege on his sealing of the flow and that reopened all the life-giving flows that had been sealed off together with the rain.

In the interim, and unbeknownst to Elijah, Ahab had been scouring the earth for him. Elijah then tells Ahab he hears “a rumbling of [approaching] rain” (verse 41), in imminent fulfillment of what Elijah had prophesied at the beginning of our chapter. Our chapter comes full circle by concluding with a detailed description of the end of the drought: “the sky grew black with clouds; there was wind, and a heavy downpour fell” (verse 45). But first, after Elijah hears the initial indications of the coming rainstorm, we are told that “he stretched himself upon the ground” (verse 42).

Significantly, Elisha, Elijah’s disciple, later adopts a similar posture in reviving the son of the Shunammite widow: “He put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands, as he stretched himself over him, and the body of the child became warm” (II Kings 4:34). Scripture seems to suggest that “stretching oneself out” is a very powerful and intense form of non-verbal prayer. But, why in our chapter does Elijah also “put his face between his knees” (verse 42)? It is possible that Elijah chose this way of hiding his face because, at this point, he did not yet want to see the approaching raincloud. But – dramatically -- Elijah sends his servant to look for and eventually see “a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising in the West” (verses 43-44).

Significantly, the early wonder-working Rabbi, Hanina ben Dosa, is reported to have employed an approach to life-saving prayer similar to that of Elijah. Talmud Bavli Berakhot 34b relates that when the son of Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai fell ill, Rabban Yohanan said to him: “Hanina, my son, pray for him that he may live.” Hanina put his head between his knees and prayed for the son and he lived.

The practice of putting one’s head between one’s knees in prayer seems to have been replaced by another physical gesture to intensify prayer. Talmud Bavli Berakhot 13b relates that Rabbi Yehudah Ha-Nasi would “pass his hands over his eyes,” when reciting the first verse of the Shema in order to recite this “acceptance of the yoke of Heaven” with complete concentration and intention (kavvanah). This Talmudic passage is reflected in what has become the accepted custom. “One places one’s hands over one’s face in reciting the first verse [of the Shema], in order not to look at anything that would interfere with concentrated intention (Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim 61:5).

Image: Women saying the Shema during prayer services at a synagogue in Medellin, Colombia. He appears on the scene out of nowhere in 17:1 and declares a drought, “until I say so.” Three years later, he meets Ahab and blames him for the drought, then sets up a massive showdown to prove to the people once and for all that “The Lord alone is God! (18:39). He is apparently in his element at that showdown, mocking the prophets of Baal and expressing unwavering confidence that God is with him and will send fire as He has withheld rain, at Elijah’s call. Elijah then kills 400 idolatrous prophets – not a task we like to think about, but one which certainly displays Elijah’s capabilities for decisive public action.

And yet.

Sometimes, the biggest, boldest actions of the most decisive leaders mask a more complex internal life.

Elijah is devoted to God, but like anyone, he has his moments.

The most obvious is when, hungry and tired, in danger, and “no better than my fathers,” Elijah asks God to take his life (19:4). This is Elijah’s low point, from which he can’t seem to recover; God tries to work with him, but Elijah simply repeats in despair, “I am moved by zeal for the LORD… the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant... I alone am left, and they are out to take my life” (19:10, 14). Elijah is burnt out and unable to connect with his people, and God finally instructs him to hand the mantle over to a successor.

But even before that personal showdown, easy to miss between his monumental exclamations at Mount Carmel and his later heartbreaking expressions of frustration with his lot and life, Elijah takes one poignant moment alone and puts his head between his knees (18:42). After his powerful demonstration, and despite his assurance to Ahab that rain is coming, Elijah suddenly doesn’t seem so sure. Perhaps he is actually worried that the rain might not come as called – and so he repeatedly sends his servant to check, until a cloud appears and he can relax.

And perhaps Elijah is simply drained. Elijah expresses a concise imperative, “Go and say to your lord Elijah is here,” and then the steely resolution at the end of the dialogue, “As the Lord of Armies lives, Whom I have served, today I will appear before him.” Obadiah, on the other hand, terrified by the prospect of conveying this message to Ahab, spouts a stream of highly nervous volubility, anxiously repeating twice what he regards as Elijah’s impossible order to him and at the same time defending his own record as a God-fearing man. The effect is almost comical: he is a good man and has incurred danger in his loyalty to the Lord, but he is also an ordinary man, susceptible to fear. The contrast to the iron-willed Elijah is striking.
