He brought about a famine. He has no qualms threatening the king to his face. He orchestrated an epic showdown with the prophets of Baal. But Elijah can’t figure out why things are still going poorly. Jezebel sets her forces out to capture him, and God uses the opportunity to prepare him for a long trek to the Sinai Desert to the mountain where the Torah was given.

Elijah probably felt vindicated. The giving of the Torah was an epic event as well. Thunder, lighting, earthquakes, and fire were all on full display that day. For Elijah, God reprises the sound and light show, but shows him each time that He does not appear in this larger-than-life display of power. In the end, God appears in the soft quiet whisper (“the still small voice”). God’s message seems clear- following Me and being zealous for My name do not require bombast. Instead, God can really truly be found in small quiet moments.

But why did God wait this long to send this message to Elijah?

Looking back at the past few chapters, it seems like God actually tried to relay this message. After Elijah confronts Ahab and promises a famine, God whisks him away to an isolated cave to be fed by nature. In this isolation, God wanted to show Elijah that God can provide in a quiet way. Relying on the world around for basic sustenance forces someone to look towards God and to see God’s hand present in one’s life. Then, God sends Elijah to the poor widow and her son. This is yet another example of trying to see God in the quiet moments. This poor widow lived alone with her son and they only had each other. When her son died she turned to Elijah to save him, which he did. God took compassion on her and her son, and the woman saw that Elijah was a man of God. While the miracle was great, it was also very private. There was no loud bombast here.

The fireworks on Mt. Carmel may have excited the people to action that very day, but it clearly did not have the type of everlasting effect that one who acts in a quiet manner can have.

But Elijah still does not get it. Before God’s show, Elijah proclaimed that “I am moved by zeal for the LORD, the God of Hosts, for the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant” (verse 10). After the show, he repeats the same thing: “I am moved by zeal for the LORD, the God of Hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant.” (verse 14). Elijah could not learn his lesson from two subtle hints from God, and he surely did not when God spelled it out directly. It was at that moment that God decided that he needed to make a change and instructed Elijah to prepare for his succession.

https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643018cc02f8a-643018cc02f8b1kings19-fired.jpg.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643018cc02f8a-643018cc02f8b1kings19-fired.jpg-150x150.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643018cc02f8a-643018cc02f8b1kings19-fired.jpg-300x222.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643018cc02f8a-643018cc02f8b1kings19-fired.jpg-768x567.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643018cc02f8a-643018cc02f8b1kings19-fired.jpg-1024x756.jpg
1536x1536":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643018cc02f8a-643018cc02f8b1kings19-fired.jpg.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1134,"2048x2048":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643018cc02f8a-643018cc02f8b1kings19-fired.jpg.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1418
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643018cc02f8a-643018cc02f8b1kings19-fired.jpg-1200x886.jpg
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2023/04/643018cc02f8a-643018cc02f8b1kings19-fired.jpg-569x420.jpg
You’re If we had written the Bible, we would have had Elijah becoming top prophet, King Ahab and Queen Jezebel profusely apologizing for any agony they caused him prior to this great show of power and truth, and the whole kingdom repenting wholeheartedly, abandoning Baal worship and living happily ever after.

Instead, chapter 19 opens with Ahab telling Jezebel what Elijah did. In our chapter alone, there are numerous contact points: the angel in the desert (as at the burning bush, Ex. 3:2), the miraculous forty days without eating or drinking, and, of course, Elijah's rendezvous with God at Mount Sinai. Furthermore, the chapter ends with the appointment of Elijah's disciple, Elisha, who will succeed him, much as Joshua, Moses' student, became his successor. (Even the name Elisha — "God will save" — matches the meaning of Joshua!). The chapter is filled with hidden references to Moses. But the parallel created by the focal scene of this chapter is the most evocative: Moses also visited God in the cave, or "nook," on Mount Sinai. It was at that site, in that self-same mysterious cave, that the momentous debate raged between Moses and God, as Moses demanded Israel's forgiveness despite the grave idolatry of the golden calf (Ex. 33:17-23). At that great epiphany, God's presence, or essence, passed by Moses to utter the cardinal attributes of divine mercy:

“And God passed over his face and proclaimed: The Lord, the Lord, a God compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness and truth, extending kindness to the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity, transgression and sin” (Ex. 34:6-7).

What is the historic significance of the cave at Mount Sinai? At that spot, Moses heroically defended his people when they had been found guilty of idolatry. At that cave, God revealed Himself as a merciful God, expressing His desire and capacity to for generosity and forbearance. God wants Elijah to learn from the great prophet Moses, the defender of Israel, who invoked the covenant to save the nation. Elijah doesn't get the hint! How wide, then, is the gulf that separates Moses and Elijah! Moses pleads for the nation; Elijah blames the nation. On the one hand, Moses knows how to present God's demands to the people — he rebukes them for their part in the golden calf and kills the perpetrators. But on the other hand, it is Moses who boldly stands before God to demand national forgiveness. In contrast, Elijah stands in the name of God and accuses the nation of abrogating the covenant.

The cave at Sinai should have resounded with the mandate to defend and shield the nation despite its sin. Elijah understands the power of influence that Jezebel holds not just over the king, but the whole nation, and goes into hiding with a totally deflated morale. God visits Elijah in his mountain cave hideout and asks him this pivotal question: “Why are you here (19:9)?” Elijah’s answer includes pointing to his own zealotry in defending God and failure to exact a lasting impact on the nation.

God offers Elijah some professional development.
