One answer could be that by literally freezing Jeroboam’s arm, God freezes the decree to kill the prophet. Perhaps this is a punishment that foretells Jeroboam’s own death. After a person dies, their limbs begin to stiffen up by a process known as rigor mortis. Jeroboam will eventually die because of his own evil actions by building the two calves and the false altars. Freezing his arm as it will be frozen in death is a way to show Jeroboam that it is his actions that will cause his death.

Another answer may come from the book of Exodus. Perhaps God’s message to Jeroboam is that Jeroboam is a mere mortal who was granted this position by God. God is the all powerful one who uses an outstretched arm. The arm of Jeroboam can be frozen and rendered useless in the face of God’s power. In chapter 12, Jeroboam built the calves and proclaimed that they were gods that took the people out of Egypt. This then is also a reminder to Jeroboam and the people of the real God who took them out of Egypt.

ps65-hand Thereby, the house of Jeroboam incurred guilt, to its utter annihilation from the face of the earth (13:33-34).

This story, then, expresses the confusion into which Jeroboam's new religious centers thrust the nation. The chapter states unequivocally that even a leader designated by God may not abrogate God's word. What were Jeroboam's options? He knew that the Torah mandated a single place of worship (see Deut. 12); his bamot clearly violated this law. In verse 2, “the man of God”—rabbinic tradition, based on 2 Chronicles 9:29, identified him as Ido the Seer—delivered the following oracle:

“O altar, altar! Thus said the LORD: A son shall be born [nolad] to the House of David, Josiah by name; and he shall slaughter upon you the priests of the shrines who bring offerings upon you. And human bones shall be burned upon you.”

First of all, why did he address the altar twice? Here, we have a classic confrontation between peshat (literary and linguistic interpretation) and derash (homily). Radak explained that the repetition of the name of something in direct address is standard for Tanakh and cites, in evidence, “Abraham Abraham” (Genesis 22:11), “Jacob Jacob” (Gen. 46:2), “Moses Moses” (Exodus 3:4), and “Samuel Samuel” (1 Samuel 3:10). Rashi, however, explained that he was simply referring to two altars: that which he stood before in Bethel, and the other, which stood in Dan. We can ask: which is the peshat and which the derash?

Second, a close reading of the Hebrew text reveals a problem with our translation. Since Josiah would not be born for several hundred years, why speak of his birth as though it had already occurred? An answer to this question comes to us from Don Isaac Abrabanel (15-16th century, Spain and Italy):

This verse teaches us important fundamentals. First, that prophets saw matters that came to them in [a divine] flow in detail, rather than the flow being [only] of generalities and the imagination of the prophet filling in the details—as is maintained by recent Jewish philosophers. If that were the case, this prophet would not have perceived who of the House of David would perform these particular actions, nor that his name would be Josiah, since it would not occur for many years.

In all candor, I must admit to finding this somewhat unsatisfactory. At the beginning of our chapter, an unnamed prophet suddenly appears: “A man of God arrived at Bethel from Judah at the command of the Lord. While Jeroboam was standing on the altar to present the offering, the man of God, at the command of the Lord, cried out against the altar: ‘O Altar, Altar! Thus, said the Lord: A son shall be born to the House of David, Josiah by name; and he shall slaughter upon you the priests of the shrines who bring offerings upon you. And human bones shall be burned upon you’” (13:1-2).

The rabbinic sages identify this “Man of God” with the Prophet Iddo (see Seder Olam Rabbah 20), in line with II Chronicles 9:29, which speaks of “the visions of Iddo, the seer, concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat”. It seems that Iddo’s “visions” were recorded in one of the lost books mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, referred to as “the Midrash of the Prophet Iddo” (II Chronicles 13:22).

Josephus (Antiquities VIII.8-9) elaborates on this biblical narrative. When Jeroboam was about to offer sacrifices on the altar at Beth-El, a “man of God” named “Jadon” (i.e. Iddo), sent by God from Jerusalem, made his prophecy as recorded our chapter. In anger, Jeroboam stretched out his hand to seize Iddo, but his right hand withered. The altar at Bethel also was broken to pieces; and all that was upon it was poured out, as the Prophet had foretold should come to pass.

So, the King Jeroboam understood that Iddo was a true prophet. He begged Iddo to restore his right hand. When his had was restored, Jeroboam invited the Prophet to dine with him. But Iddo refused, saying that God had forbidden him to eat or drink in Bethel. But a false prophet in that city did manage to persuade Iddo to eat with him. But God appeared to Iddo and said, that he would be killed for transgressing God’s commands. Indeed, as Iddo was returning to Jerusalem, a lion attacked and killed him.
