The first is from the beginning of the First Book of Kings when David instructs Solomon to tie up all of David\u2019s loose ends by getting rid of the people that had long harmed him. This chapter sets up three individuals who spent their time on the run from David, and who now are coming back to wreak havoc on his son.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second story is from I Samuel 15 when Samuel tells Saul that he will lose the monarchy and Saul grabs at Samuel\u2019s cloak and rips it. The two chapters have a few similarities and differences:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel: Conversation between prophet and deposed king.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kings: Conversation between prophet and new king. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel: Saul rips Samuel\u2019s coat accidentally. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kings: Ahijah rips his own cloak on purpose.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel: Cloak ripped into twelve pieces.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kings: Cloak ripped in two. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel: Message reinforced by cloak ripping.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">King: Cloak ripping is part of the message.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Saul ripping the cloak in the book of Samuel, the text emphasizes that the split in the monarchy is Saul\u2019s fault. His failure to listen to God and Samuel led to the monarchy being torn away. In Kings, God is giving the kingdom to Jeroboam because of the actions of Solomon. That is why Ahijah is the one who rips his cloak and gives it to Jeroboam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also an additional wordplay in the text. The word used for cloak in I Samuel 15 is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>me\u2019il\u2019<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(mem, \u2019ayin, yud, lamed, vav). The word used in Kings is \u2018<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">salmah<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(sin, lamed, mem, heh). This word appears earlier in Tanach in reference to clothes along with the similar \u2018<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simlah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u2019 So why the change of words? The letters s(h)in, lamed, mem, heh are also the spelling of Shlomo\/Solomon.\u00a0 This adds an extra layer to the symbol of the cloak being torn into While we decided that Saul tore Samuel\u2019s cloak inadvertently, we also considered the possibility that the tearing was deliberate. In that context, we entered verses 29-30 of the present chapter into evidence:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During that time, Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem and the prophet Ahijah of Shiloh met him on the way. He had put on a new robe; and when the two were alone in the open country, Ahijah took hold of the new robe he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once again, we have one robe, two parties, and four possibilities, since each party might have torn his own robe or that of his fellow. Once again, the exegetes are divided. Yosef Kara (whose position usually reflects that of Rashi who, curiously, offered no resolution to this dilemma) inferred from Ahijah\u2019s tearing \u201cthe new robe he was wearing\u201d that it was his own, while Radak openly acknowledged \u201ceither Ahijah or Jeroboam, it is indeterminate.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outstanding, in this respect, is the commentary of Yosef Ibn Kaspi, a contemporary of Ralbag and a fellow Proven\u00e7al, who disambiguated the verses and provided an explanation for the tearing of the cloak:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most correctly, [the robe] belonged to Ahijah, since it was customary for prophets to wear a cloak. Furthermore, the verse [30] calls it \u201cthe new robe he was wearing\u201d and does not call it \u201cJeroboam\u2019s robe\u201d as [the next verse] addresses him [explicitly] as \u201che said to Jeroboam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, those who were unblemished [spiritually] were unconcerned about tearing their clothing\u2014even if it is new and expensive\u2014and, in general, they are unaffected by incurring financial loss in the pursuit of spiritual perfection\u2026 While it would have been sufficient to do all this verbally, [action] is a more effective way to make an impression on the minds of the observers and listeners.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the case actually was, the symbolism\u2014both here and in 1 Samuel\u2014is the same: the undamaged robe represents wholeness; tearing it reflects separation and dissolution. Just as Samuel was signifying the rending of Saul\u2019s kingdom and its transfer to David, Ahijah, by distributing ten parts of the robe to Jeroboam, was giving him the lion\u2019s share of the According to a talmudic and kabbalistic tradition, it was worse than that. His love for them caused a kind of a cosmic rupture which, perhaps, is only now starting to be fixed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most beloved of these women, Rashi says, was Pharoah's daughter. When Solomon married her, according to the Talmud, \"the Angel Gabriel stuck a reed in the sea out of which grew the great city of Rome.\" (Sanhedrin 21b) Upon this terse and enigmatic statement, Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, drawing on earlier kabbalistic sources, builds a sweeping schematic history (Orot. 18).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rav Kook saw the greatness of Solomon in his successful integration of creative imagination into all aspects of his rule. Though his magnificent architecture, buildings adorned with beautiful art, all-encompassing wisdom and creative legal judgments (such as in the case of the two women who both claimed one baby), Solomon attained an unprecedented merging of the intellectual and imaginative worlds.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But imagination is, at least in Jewish thought, double-edged. The power to evoke images can help us conceive of beautiful not-yet existent things, but it also may tempt us to idolatry by forming visual representation of the divine. Moreover imagination is at work in erotic fantasy and sexual sin. Solomon fell prey to both of these, unable to maintain the delicate synthesis of a refined\u00a0 imagination with the rational, legal sphere, that he had previously achieved.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The breakdown came when he married Pharaoh's daughter. This was the moment of the foundation of Rome, Rav Kook explains because from then on the imaginative powers that Solomon had previously managed to domesticate, began to desert him - and the Jewish people. They had to go somewhere, he assumed, and where they went was to Rome, which became the citadel of Western, Christian culture. The stunning, religiously inspired art and architecture of Rome developed as the visual arts atrophied within Jewish civilization.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rav Kook predicted that with the return of the Jewish people to a physically rooted existence in its land, creative imagination would find expression once more. During 2005, Bregman served as the Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at Harvard University and was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He also has served as Forchheimer Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. In this final chapter of the story of Solomon, we read of his fall from God\u2019s grace, due to his marriage to hundreds of foreign women who led him to worship their foreign gods (I Kings 11:1-7). From here on Scripture details God\u2019s anger at Solomon and his punishment, particularly the adversaries God raises against Solomon, Hadad and Rezon, and the rebellion of Jeroboam (verses 9-40). Our Chapter ends with a chronological summary of King Solomon\u2019s reign, a brief notice of Solomon\u2019s death and mention of his successor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just prior to these concluding verses, Scripture includes what seems like a kind of bibliographical note: \u201cThe other events of Solomon\u2019s reign, and all his actions and his wisdom, are recorded in the Book of the Acts of Solomon\u201d (verse 41).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This \u201cbook\u201d seems to have been a more complete historical record of the reign of King Solomon that served as a source for the compilation of the Books of Kings.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The medieval Biblical commentator Rabbi David Kimhi (Radak) understands this bibliographic note to refer to \u201cbooks that Solomon composed in his wisdom, but which are no longer found among us\u201d. These books are in addition to the three biblical books traditionally attributed to Solomon: Proverbs, Song of Songs and Ecclesiastes (see Seder Olam Rabbah, Chapter 15 and Song of Songs Rabbah 1:1:6 and 10).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don Isaac Abarbanel (Portuguese Jewish statesman, Bible commentator, died Venice 1508) notes in an extensive comment on I Kings 11:41 that it was the custom of each Israelite king to appoint a scholar to record in a book all the daily acts of that king. One of these books is what is referred to in our Chapter as \u201cthe Book of the Acts of Solomon\u201d.\u00a0 Books concerning other Israelite kings are incorporated in a lost \u201cBook of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel or the Kings of Judah\u201d. A prophet would select from the stories recorded in this Book the most official and instructive narratives and these were compiled in the Books of Kings that have come down to us. Some of the remaining stories of the Israelite kings were incorporated by Ezra in the biblical Books of Chronicles (see Talmud Bavli Baba Batra 15a), as is written concerning King Solomon: \u201cThe other events of Solomon\u2019s reign, early and late, are recorded in the chronicle of the prophet Nathan and in the prophecies of Ahijah the Shilonite and in the visions of Jedo the seer concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat\u201d (II Chronicles 9:29). That landscape makes the sudden downfall of King Solomon in this chapter all the more stunning, and nearly incomprehensible, with the suggestion of this revered and holy King devolving to the level of idol worshipper.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gemara (Shabbat 56b) as well as many commentaries (Rashi, Radak and Ralbag among them) explain that King Solomon himself did not participate in idol worship but his 700 wives and 300 concubines did. The implication that that King Solomon was guilty by association goes even further, with the Gemara and commentaries taking King Solomon to task for failing to take action to oppose the behavior of his wives. That apparent complicity was deemed by God as tantamount to participation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The narrative of the construction of the Temple describes a global economy in which King Solomon was deeply embedded. Through trade with neighboring countries for building materials and employment of foreign labor, the Jewish nation both physically and spiritually did not exist in a bubble. The presence of differing and often conflicting moral practices would likely have been pervasive, and King Solomon had the unenviable task of walking the line between building and leading a Torah-based nation while pragmatically needing to maintain allegiances with nations and leaders who modeled practices that were wholly contradictory to Torah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">King Solomon faced an age-old challenge that remains relevant for every nation, leader and individual today: \u201cWhat can I accept? What can I overlook? And where do I draw the line?\u201d Looking through the lens of King Solomon\u2019s personal and professional environment one can understand how he became desensitized to the gravity of idol-worship. But this particular line had already been drawn by God. There are few things for which our Torah requires a zero-tolerance policy, but idol worship is one of them (along with murder and adultery).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern western societies often demonstrate 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century philosopher Karl Popper\u2019s paradox of tolerance: upholding tolerance by being intolerant of intolerance. But Torah spins it differently, insisting on some absolute moral imperatives of which we are commanded to be intolerant, and actively protest infractions of them. And Solomon loved God.... (3:1-3)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This marriage is the opening detail about Solomon following his initial struggle for the throne and the defeat of his rivals. At this early stage, the verses emphasize Solomon's love of God, informing us that his religious orientation is extremely positive. Yet the prominent marriage to Pharaoh's daughter seems ominous. From this point on, she interjects into the storyline regularly in 7:7-8, 9:16, 9:24, and 11:1.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By making their marriage the opening (3:1) and closing (11:1) note of the Solomon narrative, the Bible is tainting Solomon from start to finish. In its uniquely creative style, the Midrash proposes that the day of the dedication of the Temple was in fact the day of Solomon's wedding to Pharaoh's daughter (Lev. Rabba 12:1).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yudan said: All seven years of building the Temple, Solomon never drank wine. When he built it and married the daughter of Pharaoh, that night he drank wine. And there were two dances: One was the celebration of the building of the Temple, and the other was the celebration of Pharaoh\u2019s daughter. God said: \u201cWhose should I find acceptable, these or those?\u201d At that moment, He considered destroying Jerusalem\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is unlikely that Solomon's wedding actually coincided with the Temple dedication, but by superimposing one upon the other, the Midrash vividly expresses Solomon's two-mindedness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, in recording the marriage to Pharaoh's daughter at the very outset of the Solomon narrative, the book of Kings asserts that these competing loves contend for his heart from the earliest moment. Solomon seeks to balance the two, but he does not know which dance to dance, which party to attend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solomon is caught between clashing forces. Seeking to influence the world, he instigates a benevolent foreign policy, extending a hand in partnership to each country of his empire. The daughter of Pharaoh represents Egypt, Solomon's most powerful ally, symbolizing the power, trade, and international influence that appeal to his imperial mind. However, the world around Solomon is not neutral; it is pagan. He seeks to export monotheism, but he soon discovers that there is a cultural two-way street. His wives import a devastating idolatrous culture, which in time, \"in his old age,\" overwhelms him. As we noted in the introduction, the book of Kings examines history from the vantage point of the Temple's demise, probing the causes of its destruction. The Midrash depicts God as contemplating the Temple's destruction from its very beginnings, as if to label the Temple fundamentally flawed. Women. Horses<\/em>. Joining the unimaginable quantities of gold, and the fantastically huge cavalry described in the previous chapter, is the absolutely legendary number of wives and concubines - 1000! (verse 4). The criticism of the number of wives is overt, and it reminds us that this is one of the three explicit limitations that the laws regarding kingship seeks to place on an Israelite king: \u201cMoreover, he shall not keep many <\/span><b>horses <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or send people back to Egypt to add to his horses\u2026And he shall not have many <\/span><b>wives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, lest his heart go astray; nor shall he amass <\/span><b>silver and gold <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to excess\u201d (Deut. 17:16-17).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Regards from the Book of Samuel<\/em>. A kingdom torn from its king, and a cloak symbolically rent, are reminiscent of Saul (see 1 Samuel 15, e.g.). Now, though, the tearing is not final, and the symbolic rip is planned in advance.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Long-standing enemies.<\/em> Hadad the Edomite and Rezon the Aramean have some baggage still from David\u2019s regime, and they have been a nuisance during Solomon\u2019s rule (not just towards the end). So why are we hearing about them only now? So we can understand their actions in the context of Solomon\u2019s crime(s) and punishment(s).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Egypt<\/em>. Egypt has a changing political role throughout the chapter. At the end of David\u2019s reign, Egypt granted political asylum to Hadad the Edomite. At the height of Solomon\u2019s rule, a strong alliance is forged with Solomon\u2019s marriage to Pharaoh\u2019s daughter. At the end of Solomon\u2019s days, and after a new king arose in Egypt - Shishak - asylum is given to Jeroboam son of Nabat - who rebels against Solomon.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Things to keep in mind for the next chapter<\/em>. Jeroboam. He\u2019s from the tribe of Ephraim. He was in charge of \u201cthe laborers of the House of Joseph,\u201d that is the corv\u00e9e that the central government imposed on the northerners.
