As such, Egypt has played and will play an outsized role in the Tanach. Abraham went to Egypt and hid Sarah from Pharoah, but he still took her, and then God punished him. Jacob also has to contend with Egypt. Joseph is sold to an Egyptian taskmaster and becomes viceroy, the brothers go to Egypt for food, and then Jacob and his whole family stay there. Jacob even has an audience with Pharaoh. The Israelites are slaves in Egypt and then freed.

Then Egypt disappears from the story. Throughout the books of Joshua, Judges and Samuel, the only mention of Egypt is in reference to the Exodus. Egypt is a non-factor because the Israelites are a non-factor. They are a young nation focusing on conquering their own land. Even under their nascent king, Saul, the nation is young and dealing with local enemies like Amalek and the Philistines. When David ascends the throne, the nation is growing stronger and extends conflicts to outside its immediate border, but only its immediate border. The alliance with Tyre is the furthest that David’s country will extend. But that is the beginning of an international focus.

Solomon marrying the daughter of Pharaoh is the first sign in Israel’s arrival on the world stage. The fact that the ruler of the most powerful nation in the Near East would consider marrying off his daughter to Solomon was a big deal. While it ultimately led to Solomon’s downfall, the action was significant. Getting close to the world power means that you now are in their sights. In chapter 14, the king of Egypt swoops in and captures the golden shields that used to be housed in the Temple. As a metaphor for the weakened state of the kingdom since Solomon crafted them, Rehoboam can only replace them with copper ones.

The problem with all of the Pharaohs that came before is that none of them have names. This makes it difficult to tell which Pharaoh is Pharaoh at any given time in the Tanach. This current king of Egypt, though, is not a Pharaoh: he is simply called Shishak the King of Egypt. Most scholars feel confident Shishak was Shoshenq I. There was a stele discovered in Megiddo that lists Shoshenq’s conquests in Canaan, though the names of Jeroboam and Rehoboam and Jerusalem are not included.

Why is this king of Egypt not called Pharoah? Here, we begin to see its fulfillment. When Jeroboam’s son took ill, he sent his wife to consult Ahijah, the very same prophet who had earlier chosen him to rule over the ten tribes. Although Jeroboam instructed her to travel incognito, Ahijah was forewarned by God of her approach and he greeted her with “Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why are you disguised? I have a harsh message for you” (6). Implicitly, Jeroboam feared that Ahijah would respond to him severely regardless of the actual inquiry, and that fear was confirmed. Even without hearing her question about the fate of the child, he warned her that his message would be “harsh.”

Ahijah then proceeded to enumerate God’s charges against Jeroboam, who had been promoted to king in order to enhance the service of God. After all, the total number of kings who had ruled over Israel by this point in time was three: Saul, David, and Solomon. Saul failed God in his inability to confront Amalek as instructed (1 Samuel 15), David sinned grievously in the matter of Bathsheba and Uriah (2 Samuel 11-12), and of Solomon we read:

In his old age, his wives turned away Solomon’s heart after other gods, and he was not as wholeheartedly devoted to the LORD his God as his father David had been. The faith in God of Saul, David, and even Solomon never wavered, however susceptible to error they may have been. Jeroboam was of another type; he set God aside, as it were, and pretended He was not there. In these incidents, the objective is not merely misrepresentation but to perpetrate an act of deception (e.g. I Kings 20:35-41, II Samuel 15). In this regard, the biblical story — that of Adam and Eve hiding in the Garden of Eden — provides a poignant comparison. In that episode, the act of concealment is an attempt to outwit the all-knowing God rather than to deceive man. In his essay “Man Sees with the Eyes, God Sees to the Heart: Camouflage in the Flight of God,” Prof. Yair Zakovitch comments:

The greatest paradox transpires when mere mortals, whose vision is a human, flesh-and-blood perspective, attempt to deceive Heaven.... He who hopes to evade God under the disguise of a mask is animated by either naivety or desperation.... The paradox is readily apparent: At the very moment of hiding from God, the road leads to Him. Even the blindness of the prophet will not help the scheming king.

Here, too, Jeroboam seeks to hide from the prophet and circumvent God; however, it is God who guides the prophet. Thus, no matter how Jeroboam's wife conceals her identity, and no matter how blind the prophet may be, God will send His inexorable word to His prophet and deliver His pronouncement. In a cruel reversal, the messenger sent by the king to bring about the child's recovery becomes an agent of God bearing a message of death: "As for you, arise, go to your house; when you enter the city, the child will die" (14:12).

Jeroboam's wife is forced to endure an excruciating journey home, cognizant that her return will bring about her son's demise. In a sinister echo of the mofet, the prophetic sign of the previous chapter (13:3), the very death of her child verifies Ahijah's prophecy. Indeed, had Jeroboam heeded the first sign, the second would not have been necessary. The prophet instructs Jeroboam's wife, "Arise, go to your house" (14:12), and the child dies "when she came to the threshold of her house" (14:17). There is a deliberate interplay here between Jeroboam's physical house or home and his royal "house" (14:10, 13). The death of the child at the moment of entry into the house signifies the "death" of Jeroboam's royal dynasty.

Alex Israel, 1 Kings: Torn in Two, Maggid Books, 2013, Jeroboam Condemned

alex israel - While these literary records are not identical with the Biblical Books of Chronicles, they are referred to there, in I Chronicles 9:1, II Chronicles 20:34, and elsewhere. Significantly, a more extensive echo of the brief bibliographic comment at the end of our Chapter (verse 30), is found in II Chronicles 12:15: “The deeds of Rehoboam, early and late, are recorded in the Chronicles of the prophet Shemaiah and Iddo, the seer”. Moreover, “A Midrash of the Prophet Iddo” is said to have recorded additional historical information (see II Chronicles 13:22). Contemporary Biblical scholars have suggested that these lost “Chronicles”, which seem to have been recorded in some literary form, may have been similar to the royal annals of other ancient Near Eastern nations, preserved in inscriptions, such as the stele set up by King Mesha of Moab around 840 BCE.

The Portuguese Jewish statesman, financer, philosopher and Bible commentator, Don Isaac Abarbanel (died 1508), raises the general question why Scripture seems not to have included all that was apparently recorded in the lost “Books of the Chronicles of the Kings” (in his Introduction to the Book of Joshua, under the heading of his “third uncertainty – ha-safeq ha-shelishi”). In the extensive process of answering this question, Abarbanel relates to our chapter in his specific comment on I Kings 14:29. He suggests that the Biblical narrative here chose to include only what it considered relevant to the specific history of Rehoboam’s reign. However, additional events were recorded in one of the Chronicles of all the Kings of Judah, which included stories about Rehoboam.

Abarbanel goes on to suggest that among these no longer extant written records, an entire book was devoted to lauding Solomon (see I Kings 11:41), while just one other book was devoted to all the other kings of Judah, because they together were reckoned as historically important as Solomon alone. Whatever later biblical scholarship may make of Abarbanel’s imaginative reconstruction of how the Scriptural record was committed to writing, it is worth noting that this historically important Jewish figure -- who almost succeeded in preventing the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 by offering an enormous sum to the Spanish monarchy -- suggests that the Biblical record selectively preserves primarily what was of lasting historical consequence.

image: Don Isaac Abarbanel, creator unknown, c. 1437.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings14-Isaac_Abrabanel.jpg","1536x1536-width":252,"1536x1536-height":374,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings14-Isaac_Abrabanel.jpg","2048x2048-width":252,"2048x2048-height":374
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings14-Isaac_Abrabanel.jpg","1536x1536-width":252,"1536x1536-height":374,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1kings14-Isaac_Abrabanel.jpg","2048x2048-width":252,"2048x2048-height":374
What is Remembered and What is Forgotten? This phrase is primarily associated with the Israelites building shrines and altars outside of Jerusalem and worshipping God in the way other nations would worship their gods. After the death of Solomon, the Kingdom of Judah and the Kingdom of Israel, though divided, come to the same conclusion to fix a problem of inconvenience. Travel to Jerusalem is costly and time-consuming. The Kingdom of Israel, now a distinct political entity, does not want its citizens to worship God by sacrificing in Jerusalem which is in Judah. The Judean king, for his part, does not want his people to need to cross his whole territory to perform regular rituals.

What is so bad about having a local place to worship God?

God’s instructions in Deuteronomy were clear. There will be a designated place for the worship of God, and that will be the only place for all time. Except that we know it would not be. For much of Jewish history now we have done without a sacrificial system.
