Lest you think that involving an idolater in the construction of Israel’s holiest site might be a mistake, the Bible goes out of its way to lavish praise on the unparalleled wisdom of Solomon. “God endowed Solomon with wisdom and discernment in great measure, with breadth of heart as vast as the sands on the seashore.”

Such wisdom, such expansiveness of heart, precludes the possibility that his reaching out was a thoughtless mistake. The thousand and five songs and three thousand parables referred to may accord with at least some of the content of Song of Songs and Proverbs, which are attributed to him; the sages add Ecclesiastes to his repertoire. But his wisdom goes beyond that; the book of Kings notes his knowledge of trees and animals and his superiority over all other known scholars. Rashi interprets this as referring to his knowledge of natural sciences:

"He discoursed about trees" — the health of each plant and the constitution of the timber; which is suited to what type of construction, what soil it needs. And likewise "about beasts" — their medicinal needs, reproductive techniques, and nutrition.

We gain the impression that Solomon is a master of philosophy and literature, botany and zoology, and that no sphere of human wisdom eludes him. How does any individual--especially a king, who has many other responsibilities--amass this huge knowledge base?

When the text says that "Solomon built," we assume that the king planned, supervised, and financed the construction, not that he actually chiseled the stonework and cut the wood. We are not speaking of Solomon the individual; rather of his kingdom as a whole. Similarly, when we discuss Solomon's wisdom regarding trees, beasts, and fowl, we are speaking of the intellectual environment he has created in Jerusalem.

Solomon's genius lies in his plan to harness all worldly knowledge and make Jerusalem the hub of all wisdom, be it scientific, artistic, technological, or intellectual. Sometimes he achieves this goal by importing foreign expertise. When approaching Hiram, the king of Tyre, in order to procure timber, Solomon specifies that "there is none among us who know how to cut timber like the inhabitants of Sidon" (5:20). Yet Solomon insists, "My servants will work with yours" (ibid.). His intention is that his men should learn this art, the work and skill of the lumberjack, from the Phoenicians. He imports not only cedar wood, but also the technical know-how, thus expanding the knowledge base and skill set of the nation.

Beyond Solomon's personal genius and prowess, he pools the most advanced knowledge and scholarship in his kingdom. He establishes Jerusalem as the center of global expertise. He turns it into the Yale and Harvard, the Oxford and Cambridge of the ancient world. It thus becomes a magnet for intellectuals and students who seek to further their education at this crucible of knowledge.

Isaiah depicts Jerusalem as a city which will dispense wisdom and justice for all nations:

“Shall stand firm above the mountains
And tower above the hills;
And the many peoples shall go and say:
“Come, let us go up to the Mount of the Lord,
To the House of the God of Jacob;
That He may instruct us in His ways. Should we be wholly impressed, when we read of the huge quantities of his daily food provisions, of his 40,000 stalls of horses, and the vast armies of laborers who brought cedar and cypress wood from Lebanon, the raw materials of the Temple? Who hasn’t wondered, standing before ancient miracles such as the Acropolis or the Coliseum, or early modern marvels like Versailles, about the cost to the anonymous, forgotten workers who built them? Should we feel similarly about Solomon’s glorious achievements?

To be sure, we learn that the workers who traveled to Lebanon were treated with far greater consideration that most construction laborers in the ancient world. Each shift spent a month in Lebanon, and two months at home. (v.28) The Talmud (Ketubot 62a) cites this verse in relation to the maximum length of time one who works away from home can be apart from his wife. The Temple was not built on the ruins of the family life and dignity of the thousands of men who toiled to create it. This is a powerful testament to Solomon’s compassion.

Yet there are undercurrents of disquiet in the midrashim and commentators about the human implications of these colossal endeavors. Rashi (v.30) for example is concerned to show that those who did the hardest work of quarrying and dragging the stones were not native-born Jews but proselytes who had been attracted to join Israel by the greatness of Solomon’s kingdom (the implication being that they would have been satisfied to fulfill even menial roles.) Abarbanel, who as royal treasurer in Spain, knew about the logistics of supplying kings, details the immense apparatus of workers and overseers required to exact and transport Solomon’s daily tribute of food.

A poignant questioning of the cost of all this grandeur appears in the Talmud (Bava Metzia, 86a) where the rabbis find ways to infer that Solomon’s provisions (thirty kors of fine flour, ten fat oxen, a hundred sheep etc.) were many times greater than even the amounts detailed in the Bible. Rabbi Yitzhak argues that each of Solomon’s 1000 wives made him a feast of these proportions in her house each night, because every wife thought to herself, “Perhaps he will dine with me tonight.” I don’t think that this is merely a hyperbolic statement about Solomon’s wealth. To me it evokes a tragic image of 999 lonely women gazing upon 999 untouched banquets every night of Solomon’s reign, and the unspeakable waste involved in maintaining his opulent lifestyle.

Should we then be troubled? Yes, somewhat. Our chapter and its commentaries show Solomon’s uncommon concern for many of those who enabled his grand achievements, while also hinting at their inevitable human toll.

<span Or better yet, man does not live by לֶּ֤חֶם alone. What, exactly, does לֶּ֤חֶם anyways? Making matters more complicated, the Arabic cognate لحم (laḥm) means ‘meat’. According to Edward Ullendorff, the Semitic root means merely "primary food", so that the specific sense can vary from region to region.

It should be noted that the English word ‘bread’ once also had a broader meaning of ‘food’. Noah Webster’s entry for ‘bread’ in his original 1828 dictionary has for one sense of the word, ‘food in general’.

It is with this question in mind that we read 1 Kings 5:2: “Solomon’s daily לֶּ֤חֶם consisted of 30 kors of semolina, and 60 kors of [ordinary] flour.”

Rashi provides insight into the manifold meanings of the word in his comments to Genesis 31:54 in which Jacob and Laban make a pact, which is concluded, in typical Jewish fashion, with a meal (לֶּ֤חֶם).

He says: Any article of food is termed לחם bread, as (Daniel 5:1) “made a great feast (lechem rav)”, and (Jeremiah 11:19) “Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof (belachmo)". Thus, according to Rashi, although the Hebrew לֶּ֤חֶם can have the specific meaning of ‘bread’, it can retain its basic (or perhaps original) meaning of ‘food’.

This discussion regarding meaning is not trivial for the translator, since in any given context, the translator must choose between the two meanings. Thus, Harry Orlinsky notes in his Notes on the New Translation of the Torah (on the 1962 JPS translation), that he translated 'to eat lechem' in Genesis 37:25 as 'to eat a meal' since "to eat bread...fails to reproduce the idiom in Heb. akhal lechem."

One way to have one’s bread and eat it too is to read the use of לֶּ֤חֶם here as synecdoche, a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa. In other words, the word לֶּ֤חֶם could mean ‘bread’ but be representative of the meal as a whole.

<span style="font-weight:
