The young nation was in no position to do anything on their own. God needed to hold their hand each step of the way. God showed the people exactly what type of Tabernacle God wanted. Our challenge is to see how many of those years can be accounted for by ordinary, textual, means.

First of all, we know with certainty that the period between the Exodus and entering the Land of Israel was 40 years. We also know that Saul ruled for 2 years, and David for 40 years, which, along with Solomon’s 4, account, with certitude, for 86 years. It is with the intervening period, reflecting, the era of Joshua and the Judges, that we run into a problem: Even if we had a record of how many years each judge ruled, we do not know whether they were all consecutive—rather than overlapping—nor do we know how long of a gap there may have been between even consecutive tenures.

However, we do have a significant piece of chronological information, courtesy of Jephthah. The King of Ammon had raised the issue of the legitimacy of Israel’s right to the land east of the Jordan, claiming that “when Israel came from Egypt, they seized the land that is mine” (Judges 11:13). In his reply, Jephthah argued that “Israel has been inhabiting [Trans-Jordan] for three hundred years, why have you not tried to recover them all this time?” (26). That would close our gap to a bit less than a century, and we could assume that the outstanding time was subsumed in the period between Jephthah and the inauguration of Saul.

An alternative explanation, albeit less traditional, would stipulate that the number 480 is not exact but symbolic, or representational (“typological”). Given that 40 years is an oft-recurring number in biblical chronology (we have noted two such examples in our own brief accounting above), 480 could be understood as a formulaic way of saying 40 X 12—another typological number. In fact, if we return to the priestly genealogy of 1 Chronicles 5 that we cited in chapter 4, and we count backwards from Azariah “who was the priest in the House that Solomon built” (36), we arrive at Phineas, son of Elazar, son of Aaron, a contemporary of the Exodus. This way we have no need to account for a missing century.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/1kings6-calendar.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/1kings6-calendar.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/1kings6-calendar.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/1kings6-calendar.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
Sarah Rudolph is a freelance Jewish educator, writer, and editor. It notes that “When the House was built, only finished stones cut at the quarry were used, so that no hammer or ax or any iron tool was heard in the House while it was being built” (verse 7, compare I Kings 7:9). This represents an extension -- to cover the entire Temple -- of the divine command that the altar specifically was to be built only of previously hewn stones (‘even gazit), quarried and dressed without the use of any iron tool (Exodus 20:21 and Deuteronomy 27:5-6, see also Joshua 8:30-31).

Mishnah Middot 3:4 records that the stones of both the Ramp (Ha-Kevesh) and the Altar (Ha-Mizbeah) were quarried as whole stones using no iron tool. For iron would have rendered the stone invalid for use in the Temple. The stone was not even plastered using an iron trowel, lest iron should touch the stones. For iron [from which weapons are made] is fashioned to shorten human life, while the Temple was built to lengthen human life. And what shortens life should not be wielded against what lengthens life (see Sifre to Numbers 35:25, section 160).

But, how was it possible to quarry, dress and maintain stone without the use of any iron tools? A complex set of traditions explains that this was accomplished by use of the “Shamir” (see Legends of the Jews [2003], pp. 35,40, 973 and 975). Talmud Bavli Sotah 48b indicates that stone could be split by merely showing it to the Shamir. This suggests that the Shamir was an animate being. Medieval Jewish authorities (see, for example, Rashi to Pesahim 54a and Maimonides’ Commentary on Avot 5:6) explain that the Shamir was a stone-cutting worm.

According to Mishnah Avot 5:6, the Shamir was one of those extraordinary things that were created at the last moment of the six days of creation to be held in reserve for when they would be needed later. Midrash Tehillim 78:11 adds that the Shamir was brought to Solomon from Paradise by an eagle or by a hoopoe. Talmud Bavli Gittin 68a-b preserves an extensive explanation of how King Solomon obtained the elusive Shamir by commanding Ashmedai (Asmodeus), king of the demons. After Solomon made use of the Shamir to cut the stone needed to build the Temple, it seems to have disappeared from our world (Mishnah Sotah 9:12).

Image: Lion-headed Chnoubis, photo by Robert L. Abarbanel (1437-1508) poses a number of questions on this seemingly simple verse: First, why do we count years here from the Exodus from Egypt and not from creation or from Solomon’s reign itself? Second, why the “fourth year” when King David, his father, already instructed Solomon to build the “House” and even gave him the plans and most of the material? Third, I would like to add, is there meaning to the “second month” mentioned both as “second” and in its name “the month of Ziv”??

Abarbanel thinks that the Exodus hints at the fact that the First Temple’s years are counted from the construction of its predecessor, the Mishkan, which lasted for 480 years. Solomon’s Temple then stood for 410 years. 70 years of the exile passed following the destruction of the First Temple before the Second Temple was built, which totals 480 again. According to our tradition, the Second Temple also stood for 480 years, although that count includes a debate regarding the Second Temple’s “missing years” (historically, it stood for about 580 years). For Abarbanel and others, the numbers indicate a connection between all the central worship places creating a continuity of Sanctuaries for God, who (based on Exodus 25:9) said that if we build a holy place set aside for Him, He will dwell among us.

As for King David’s plans and materials, Solomon brought them to the Temple’s treasury (Kings I, 7:51), so they were not lost or spent.
