According to chapter 7, Solomon took 13 years to build his palace. The commentators are almost unanimous in explaining that this discrepancy is meant to praise Solomon. While he took 13 years to build his palace, which is extensively detailed in this chapter, he rushed the building of the Temple to make sure it was completed in a much shorter seven years. In the description of his wealth in chapter 5, the text brings up his many stables, and in chapter 7 that he built a whole separate palace for the daughter of Pharaoh. This is referred to as the “Lebanon Forest House” because it was built of “cedars of Lebanon” -- “with four rows of cedar columns, and with hewn cedar beams above the columns” (I Kings 7:1-2). To undertake the massive metalwork in his palace, Solomon brought Hiram from Tyre (verse 13-14). With the help of this renowned artisan, Solomon set up two bronze columns “at the portico of the Great Hall. He set up one column on the right and named it Yakhin, and he set up the other column on the left and named it Boaz” (verse 21, compare II Chronicles 3:17, Jeremiah 52:20-22).

It is curious that columns, no matter how impressive, should be given human names. According to a late Midrashic text (Midrash Tadshe, Chapter 2, as reworked by Radak to I Kings 7:21) ‘Yakhin’, was so named to express the hope that the Temple complex should be established forever, as it says: “as the moon, it shall be established (yikon) forever” (Psalms 89:38). “Boaz” was so named as an expression of strength, since this name can be read as a contraction of two Hebrew words “Bo ‘Az” (“in it is strength”), as it says: “The Lord will give strength [‘oz] to His people” (Psalms 29:11). The Hida (Haim Yosef David Azulai, died 1805) interpreted these two names to teach the moral lesson that one who prepares himself (Yakhin) spiritually can override the strong (Bo ‘Az) temptation to sin. First, many claim that the text is simply using round numbers. They wouldn’t have said the tank was 10 cubits from brim to brim, and the circumference was 31.4159… cubits. Though, they easily could have said 31 and a half cubits, and we would have known they were close.

Another interpretation was that they were measuring the inside, and the rim of the brim had some thickness. The text indeed later (verse 26) says that it's width was a handbreadth (1/6 of a cubit). But then then the diameter was measured from the inside, and the circumference from the outside - why? It's possible, but a stretch.

My favorite resolution of this conundrum is to look at the text itself. The Hebrew describing that 30 cubit circumference says: .וקוה [וְקָו] שְׁלֹשִׁים בָּֽאַמָּה יָסֹב אֹתוֹ סָבִיב You’ll notice there is a word there in square brackets. This indicates there is a discrepancy between the word as read (“keri”) and the word as written (“ketiv”). The word is kav, which means “line” (or as the translation has it: “it measured”).

The word as it is written is קוה (no vowels - since it is not read), and it is read קָו. Why is this relevant? Let us remember that all Hebrew letters also have number equivalents. The “science” of these alpha-numeric equivalencies (and I use the word “science” advisedly) is known as gematria. For instance aleph=1, bet=2, and so one, with kof=100. So the numeric value of the word in question as written equals 111 (100 + 6 + 5), while the letters for how it is read equal 106 (100 + 5). Still with us? Here’s where it gets interesting.

Do the math: divide the written by the spoken, that is 111∕106, and what do you get? 1.047169… This is a correction factor. However, the gates perceive that Solomon is referring to himself as the "king of glory," and they threaten to consume him.
