The Queen of Sheba hears about Solomon through the name of God and wants to visit him herself to test him with riddles. The origin of the Queen’s visit sounds similar to Jethro’s visit back in Exodus and Rahab’s in Joshua: “Jethro priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard all that God had done for Moses and for Israel, God’s people, how God had brought Israel out from Egypt” (Exodus 18:1) and “we have heard how the Lord dried up the waters of the Sea of Suf before you, when you came out of Egypt” (Joshua 2:10). This time, the trigger for an outsider to visit is not miraculous, it is simply fame: in wisdom and wealth. This presents a shift of Israel to a “normal” nation. She and the king exchange gifts before her returns home (verses 10-13). Our chapter then details the vast amounts of treasure that King Solomon received each year and stored in his Lebanon Forest House. Then we are told that “The king also made a large throne of ivory, and he overlaid it with refined gold. Six steps led up to the throne, and the throne had a back with a rounded top, and arms on either side of the seat. Two lions stood beside the arms, and twelve lions stood on the six steps, six on either side. This midrashic text goes on to describe how Solomon’s throne was decorated: A golden scepter was suspended behind it, on top of which was a dove. We do have some biblical clues, but the rest is pure speculation—perhaps, even fantasy.

First of all, let us examine the biblical evidence. Sheba appears to have been—in really ancient times—a reasonably popular name, occurring no fewer than three times in Genesis: first, as a son of Kush (son of Ham, son of Noah; Gen. 10:7); second, as a son of Joktan (son of Eber, son of Shem, son of Noah; Gen. 10:28); and, finally, as a son of Jokshan (son of Abraham via Keturah; Gen. 25:3). (NOTE: Apart from the striking similarity between the names Joktan and Jokshan, the first and third Shebas each had a brother named Dedan. Go figure!) There are also three references to Sheba in Ezekiel—where Dedan is also mentioned—and the raiders who slew Job’s children and looted his home are also identified with Sheba (1:15). However, since Utz, Job’s homeland (and likely the source of L. Frank Baum’s Oz), is otherwise unidentified, that’s not much help.

Here is the commentary on verse 1 of Ralbag/Gersonides, who lived in Provence in the 14th century. See if you can tell where the biblical allusions end and the speculation begins:

In the Book of Ben Sirah it is written that she was the mother of Nebuchadnezzar. She was born to one of the sons of the concubines whom Abraham banished from the presence of his son Isaac [Gen. 25:5], advising them to distance themselves lest they subjugate Isaac’s descendants, because anyone subjugating Isaac’s descendants will never ever recover. Now, when they heard that Solomon was a world ruler, they thought that he was the Messiah whom Abraham had told them to anticipate. That is why the Queen of Sheba came when “she heard of Solomon’s fame through the name of the Lord,” hearing that Solomon ruled the world, even over the shades and the birds.

NB: The Book of Ben Sirah to which Ralbag referred is not the apocryphal book of that name, but a work of lesser repute known as the Alphabet of Ben Sirah. Also, the legend of the Queen of Sheba features in Islam as well, which identifies her with the South Arabian kingdom of Saba’ and dates the arrival there of the first Yemenite Jews to the time of Solomon. The Ethiopic Church adopted it, too, claiming that the kings of Ethiopia were descended from the union of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Hence, the renowned King Haile Selassie referred to himself as The Lion of Judah.

Image: Betty Blythe as As Ralbag notes, the queen of Sheba witnessed the influence of that wisdom in everything Solomon did – from his table settings to the placement of his servants to his palace to his justice. And as Ralbag further suggests, his use of wisdom itself grew the wisdom: “She heard of him, that everything he did, he did for the sake of God… and because of this, he grew excessively in wisdom, because this is one of the great tools for acquiring wisdom.” A “tool” – not a unique divine gift, but something anyone can wield.

The fact that God granted Solomon wisdom was not in itself what really impressed the queen of Sheba.

Ultimately, the true source of Solomon’s wisdom was his own drive to do right with it, and such commitment is a tool available to us all, to motivate our own growth and permeate everything we do.
