In the Tanach, the text occasionally employs a literary device known as “dramatic irony.” Dramatic irony is when the audience knows more information than the characters in the story. One example of this is the story of Joseph and his brothers. The reader knows that the viceroy of Egypt is really Joseph, but the brothers themselves do not know.

Here, chapter 16 employs a different type of irony- situational irony. Situational irony is when the outcome is something people do not expect at all. A famous example of this is in the Wizard of Oz where everyone in Oz thinks that the Wizard is all powerful, but in the end it turns out that he is just a man behind a curtain. On David’s solemn march out of Jerusalem he encounters a man walking with donkeys laden with food. The scene is reminiscent of Abigail's midnight trek to stop David from attacking her household. David sees the donkeys and wonders where Mephiboshet is. Ziva responds that Mephiboshet decided to stay back in Jerusalem hoping that in the chaos of Absalom’s revolt and David’s flight that the throne would be restored to the house of Saul.

David immediately revokes the promises he made to Mephiboshet in chapter 9. Instead, he tells Ziva that he can have all the lands of the house of Saul. On its face, David’s decree seems just. If Mephiboshet did in fact rebel, then he should be stripped of the gifts David had bestowed upon him. If this was a case of dramatic irony, then the text would have revealed what really happened, and the reader would be able to judge David. But, the text does not give us the background. The reader is in the same situation as David who takes Ziva’s word at face value. The situational irony appears in a few chapters when it is revealed that Ziva was lying to David.

Why does the text employ this tactic now? By not revealing the backstory behind Ziva, the text allows the reader to sit in David’s shoes fleeing Jerusalem. This adds to the drama of the situation and places the reader at ease with the main character. It also makes the reader react differently when the truth is later revealed. Did David act too harshly? Did he act too quickly? Or did Ziva properly calculate that a harried deposed leader would not have time for a full investigation?

Robert Alter is the Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has taught since 1967. David’s concubines are mentioned only over two verses, a short section that holds a deep well of pain and violence. In a deeply disturbing attempt at reifying his power, Absalom sleeps with -- it would seem, rapes, as the women have no option to opt out -- his father’s concubines. The women have been left behind as others have fled, “left to mind the palace” (16:21). The reader gets the impression that they are viewed as almost an accoutrement to the palace, an accessory that accompanies the building rather than members of the royal household.

The apex of Absalom’s rebellion is this act of sexual violence. This is, per the advice of Ahithophel, the moment that will solidify his power, his complete replacement of his father. By having sex with the women his father has sex with, he will himself become the king. But, unlike many other women in the Prophetic books, these several concubines are silent. If they spoke — or screamed, or protested — the text does not report it.

Absalom’s rape of his father’s concubines is shocking in its scale and implied violence. But it is not new. The event takes place on the palace roof; this is the same palace roof from which his father King David observed Bathsheba bathing and demanded her attentions. Acts of violence, in particular sexual violence, often take place embedded in a context that has created a situation in which they will be overlooked or downplayed. Absalom’s assault is not even the first act of sexual aggression in the book to take place in that exact location!

Acts of violence are perpetrated by individuals, but also within systems. Absalom does not act alone; he is encouraged by Ahithophel, and he acts in a context where women are already being treated as objects, left with the royal palace rather than taken to safety away from Absalom. To combat such violence takes more than individual condemnations; palace roofs must cease to be places where men feel they can do whatever they want.

<span style="font-weight: Scripture understands that Ahithophel’s advice was generally accepted as sound: “In those days, the advice which Ahithophel gave was accepted as if a man inquired of the word of God; that is how all the advice of Ahithophel was esteemed both by David and by Absalom” (verse 23).

The Midrash on Psalms (3:4) comments on this verse, that his advice “was as if a man inquired of the word of God”. The Midrash notes that according to the Masorah, the word “man” is read (Qeri), though it is not actually written (Ketiv). From this Masoretic note, the Midrash learns that Ahithophel was not like a “man”, but rather like an angel. And consequently, in referring to his once trusted counselor, David lamented: “It was not an enemy who reviled me — that I could bear! It was not my foe who vaunts himself against me — from him, I could hide. But it is you [Ahithophel], my equal, my companion, my friend! Sweet was our fellowship. How did that come about?

The Midrash (Yalqut Shimoni II, Remez 151) states that Ahithophel himself misread astrological signs, leading him to believe that he would become king of Israel. He looked at Absalom and advised him to have sexual intercourse with the concubines of King David, his father. Absalom asked in surprise: “You are telling me to possess my father’s concubines?! Ahithophel assured him that this was indeed a divine decree, recalling that God had said to David: ‘I will make a calamity rise against you from within your own house; I will take your wives and give them to another man before your very eyes and he shall sleep with your wives under this very sun’” (12:11).

Ahithophel then went on to advise Absalom to murder his own father, David. En passant, we recall that David had earlier exclaimed “the Zeruiah boys are just too tough [or savage] for me” (2 Samuel 3:39), hinting at yet another score that will not be settled until we get to David’s last will and testament (1 Kings 2).

Image: Shimei curses David, 1860 woodcut by Julius Schnorr von Karolsfeld / wikimedia

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2sam16-shimei-ben-gera.png","1536x1536-width":800,"1536x1536-height":639,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2sam16-shimei-ben-gera.png","2048x2048-width":800,"2048x2048-height":639
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2sam16-shimei-ben-gera.png","1536x1536-width":800,"1536x1536-height":639,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2sam16-shimei-ben-gera.png","2048x2048-width":800,"2048x2048-height":639
Biblical Snapshots: The Blood Of Saul On David's Hands??
