Why does he get such a relatively long end to his story?

Ahithophel first appears on the scene in II Samuel 15 as someone who supported Absalom. There is no backstory for Ahithophel and he is not even listed earlier in David’s group of advisors II Samuel 8. But Ahithophel’s defection was frightening to David: “David said ‘God, please ruin Ahithophel’s advice’” (15:31).

It is a little unclear yet why David is so afraid, but in 16:23 Ahithophel’s advice is described as if it came straight from God’s mouth. This is clearly a higher level of praise than even Jonadab, Amnon’s friend who was also a court adviser. Jonadab is simply described as very smart. Ahithophel advises Absalom to cohabit with David’s concubines on the rooftop. (Perhaps a reference to the David and Bathsheba story, and certainly referencing the story of Ritzpah).

The very next time that Ahithophel has a chance to advise Absalom he is met with competing advice from David’s mole, the elder Chushai. Ahithophel’s plan is simple and effective, but Chushai’s is grandiose and spectacular, and Absalom falls for the bait. Ahithophel knew that if his advice was not followed it meant that it came from God. Only God’s advice was strong enough to overcome his advice.

There is a small reference to Balaam here as well. Balaam was most famous for riding his own donkey and for having his curse overturned to a blessing. Balaam met an ignominious ending being killed on the battlefield in the wilderness. Ahithophel realizes that Absalom is doomed and that if God can overturn his advice, Ahithophel will meet the same end as Balaam. So, he tried to change the narrative. By killing himself, he is able to set his affairs in order and be buried in his family plot. Perhaps Ahithophel is given this extended ending as a reward for him realizing that God was really pulling the strings.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/dt21-hanging.jpg","1536x1536-width":515,"1536x1536-height":370,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/dt21-hanging.jpg","2048x2048-width":515,"2048x2048-height":370
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/dt21-hanging.jpg","1536x1536-width":515,"1536x1536-height":370,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/dt21-hanging.jpg","2048x2048-width":515,"2048x2048-height":370
Dr. Moshe Sokolow is Associate Dean of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, Yeshiva University, and teaches a weekly class in parashat hashavu`a at Lincoln Square Synagogue. In this chapter, both of David’s assumptions were validated: Ahithophel indeed delivered sage and pertinent advice to Absalom, and only Hushai was able to override that advice. The result was salvific for David, who lived to fight another day (22), but catastrophic for Ahithophel, who took it so personally that he returned home to Gilo and commited suicide (23). Gilo, the southern suburb of Jerusalem, is considered to be situated in reasonable proximity to the biblical site of the same name.

Yet another of David’s preemptive strategies paid off in this chapter. Ahimaaz and Jonathan, sons of the priests Zadok and Evyatar, were his spies in Absalom’s camp and brought him word of Hushai’s success and Ahithophel’s comeuppance. Some details of their escapade, however, warrant further investigation. First of all, there is the manner in which they evaded detection by Absalom’s soldiers: While they hid in a well, a woman covered its mouth with drying pitas and pointed the pursuers in the wrong direction, strikingly reminiscent of the manner in which Joshua’s spies were aided by Rahab (Joshua 2).

More subtle, albeit more significant, is the fact that this took place in Bahurim, which was home to Shimei son of Gera, identified as “from Saul’s family” (16:5). This allows David to escape once again. Ahithophel, David’s once trusted counselor, whose advice has now been rejected, returns home to Giloh and commits suicide (17:1-23).

According to Talmud Bavli Sanhedrin 106a, Ahithophel was a pre-eminent Torah scholar.
