For example, the two stories of David sneaking up to Saul in I Samuel- once cutting his robe and once stealing his spear. It is rare, however, to have someone in the actual text notice similarities between the stories. In chapter 4, two guards of Ish Boshet kill him in his sleep. (Bigtan and Teresh in the Purim story come to mind here, but that is not the parallel story). The two then cut off Ish Boshet’s head and bring it to David hoping for a reward for vanquishing David’s enemy.

This story sounds very similar to the one in chapter 1 when the Amalek convert comes to David with Saul’s crown to tell him he died. David himself sees the similarities:

‘The man who told me in Ziklag that Saul was dead thought he was bringing good news. But instead of rewarding him for the news, I seized and killed him. How much more, then, when wicked men have killed a blameless man in bed in his own house! I will certainly avenge his blood on you, and I will rid the earth of you’ (verses 10-11).

David did not need to be up on his 929 to remember a story that just happened. But it brings up an interesting question: was David right to kill the Amalek convert and was he right to kill the two king’s guards? The two guards seem straightforward. They actually killed the king in his sleep. David never called for Ish Boshet’s death. He never even attacked Ish Boshet’s forces. Ish Boshet never pursued David like Saul did. Their act was not done at his behest, so it was murder.

The Amalekite case is different. His account of the story seems to conflict with the text’s account in I Samuel 31. Saul is felled by arrows and requests that his arms bearer kill him so that the Philistines would not torture him. When the arms bearer hesitates, Saul kills himself. But in the Amalekite’s retelling, Saul was still alive when he approached him on the field. Perhaps the Amalekite embellished the story hoping that the added fact that he killed Saul would gain favor with David. David does not investigate the matter, but instead takes the Amalekite at his word and kills him. Just like Ish Boshet’s guards, the Amalekite disregards everything that David did up until that point. David never tried to kill Saul. David may have been right to kill these individuals for regicide, but he may also have been at fault for not making his plans and royal wishes known to all.

-63c79c104824e--63c79c104824f1sam18-crown By this point in the story, we are not surprised by the general thrust of David’s response: he is horrified by those who deem it consistent with David’s desire to kill anyone from the house of Saul. Yet, in formulating his response, David’s language implicitly suggests that he goes even further:

"When wicked men have killed a blameless man in bed in his own house, I will certainly avenge his blood on you, and I will rid the earth of you" (v. 11).

David’s language is strikingly reminiscent of the words the Torah uses to refer to the obligation upon the Jewish court to destroy evildoers from within its midst. Indeed, some of the most pernicious individuals are described in Deuteronomy in this way, including the false prophet (Deut. 13:6), the idolator (17:7), rebellious elder (17:12), false witnesses (19:19), rebellious child (21:21), adulteress (22:24), and kidnapper (24:7).

By invoking this comparison, David does something utterly shocking: their best of intentions notwithstanding, he compares the killers of Ish Boshet to the most vile of criminals described in Deuteronomy. But, we still wonder: what exactly is the significance of David’s implicit invocation of this Deuteronomic phrase?

A brief examination of the overarching themes of Deuteronomy make the significance of this comparison both plain and powerful. The central theme of many of the sections that appear in the portions referenced above - Re’eh, Shoftim, and Ki Tetze - is that they offer the Jewish nation entering the Land of Canaan a blueprint for building a just society. By insisting on the highest of moral standards, and having no tolerance for values that undermine these ethical commitments, the Jews can successfully build the type of ideal society that God has in mind for them in the Holy Land.

This same motif, King David implies, is the underlying theme of his kingdom. David’s reign is built on the Deuteronomic values of ethics and morality. Even - and especially - when those around him seek to act in his best interests by killing off David’s enemies, he will have none of it. Seeking to make the point indisputable, David invokes the zero-tolerance policy of Deuteronomy in seeking to convey that he will not tolerate such behavior.

<span He was loyal to those who took his side, antagonistic, even vindictive, towards those who opposed him, and, above all else, he demanded respect for the institution he personified—the monarchy. Those who expected to curry favor with him by disparaging Saul—like the Amalekite in chapter 1 who told him that he had hastened his demise—ended up incurring his wrath instead.

In this chapter, we have a reprise of this tendency. Baanah and Rechab, captains in Saul’s army (and, by implication of v. 2, fellow Benjaminites and, perhaps, even relatives), turned against Ish-Boshet and delivered his head to David—quite literally—in apparent expectation of a reward. Not only were they executed, but they were dismembered, a gruesome act of public shaming reminiscent of Adoni Bezek who would shame his defeated opponents by cutting off their fingers and toes (Judges 1:6), and then their corpses were put on public display, similar to the postmortem hanging of Haman and sons (Esther 9).

Finally, yet another foreshadowing occurs, as we learn about Mephi-Boshet,* son of Jonathan, who was crippled when his nurse dropped him in her haste to escape David’s expected vengeance. David’s response, though also violent, shows the importance of a unity of vision and values.
