Irked by this imbalance, David wishes to build a temple for God. Initially, Nathan the prophet is all in, but then God appears to Nathan and tells him to reverse course. Why did God not want David to build the Temple?

The conventional wisdom is that David fought wars and so he is too bloodied to be the one to build God's temple. The only problem is that this reason is not mentioned here. Instead, that answer appears only in the Book of Chronicles, the official, yet propagandized version of these events.

The Tabernacle was nomadic, so it matched the people at the time. David thought that now that the people were established, God would want an established house. But God is not on the same page. Reading the chapter, it sounds like God does not want a physical house at all. God promises to establish David’s ‘house’ forever: not a physical one, but a generational reputational one. God also explains that David’s son will “build a house for My name, and I will establish his royal throne forever” (verse 13). This is very different from David’s request to build a house for God to abide in.

God hammers home the point that a house that is established forever is one built on reputation and renown. This is why God does not rebuke the people for not building a Temple all of these years. It was never God’s request for a Temple. To add a Midrashic spin, the word “house” appears twelve times in the chapter after David proposes to build the Temple. Perhaps this number 12 is a symbolic way of the text to show that God does not need a physical house. God’s home is within the twelve tribes of Israel.

Image: R. Even though Nathan counsels David to “do all that is in your heart for God is with you (7:3)”, we learn that he has made this pronouncement without first consulting with God. And God has a different answer. In a gentle but heartbreaking message for David, God told Nathan to explain to David that the desired temple would not be his legacy. Instead, his son Solomon, who will succeed David and solidify his dynasty, will be tasked with building the temple.

David intuitively (or, as some commentaries suggest, from a part of the message that’s not related here) understands that the reason he doesn’t merit building the temple himself is because his greatness had come through fighting wars. David’s battles were divinely sanctioned, but the reality of war, regardless of how justified it may be and how carefully executed, is that there will inevitably be innocent casualties. As the leader, that innocent blood is ultimately on David’s hands.

The medieval commentator Rabbi David Kimhi, Radak, comments that although the blood shed by David did not warrant punishment since the intention was to destroy evil, nevertheless it is possible that there were good and pious victims of those wars. Furthermore, argues the Radak, the temple itself represents the ideal of peace and a house of peace cannot be built by a man of war. Thus, David, for all his own prodigious leadership qualities, is rendered ineligible for the task.

Lesser leaders than King David might be inclined to lick their wounds of disappointment – even resent the decision and decision-maker. But on hearing the answer that fundamentally meant, no, not you, not now, David does something remarkable. “King David then came and sat down before God” (7:18) to praise Him and the Jewish people (7:22-23), and express gratitude to God for ensuring his dynasty through his son Solomon. There is no sulking, no arguing, no passive-aggressive retribution. David purely and passionately looks forward, not back, to the glory that is yet to be bestowed on him, his family and his people. By doing so he has honoured God and the nation and laid the foundation for his successor’s success.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2sam7-hand.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2sam7-hand.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2sam7-hand.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2sam7-hand.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
Rabbi Yedidya Sinclair serves as Senior Rabbinic Scholar at Hazon, the leading US Jewish environmental organization. The author of this episode is faced with the difficulty of explaining a historical fact, that David did not build the temple, as we might have expected, but rather it was his son Solomon who carried out the construction. The probable historical reason was that David was too preoccupied with the struggles with his own court and family. In Chronicles, the reason given is that he had shed blood. Here, the argument God makes is that it is an act of presumption for a mere mortal to build a temple for the unhoused God of Israelite history. But this line of reasoning actually enhances the theological importance of Solomon’s temple, for it suggests that God Himself will build a house when He is good and ready, using the human agency He chooses.
