David and his troops return to Ziklag, but someone else gets there first. Amalek attacked the city while David went out to battle with the Philistines. They destroyed the city and kidnapped the inhabitants. It was certainly a blunder to leave the city unprotected, but David made the political choice to go to battle with Achish as a way to keep his position with the Philistines secure. Had he not gone, or left some soldiers behind, he may have raised further suspicion with the Philistine king. In any event, David does something curious after the troops voice their displeasure:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

David was in great danger, for the troops threatened to stone him; for all the troops were embittered on account of their sons and daughters. But David sought strength in the LORD his God (verse 6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why did David need to ask God if he should go to rescue the people? It seems obvious that the best course of action would be to try to save his wives and his troops' families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps the attack on Ziklag was punishment from God for joining with the Philistines to potentially attack the Israelites. David would therefore be concerned that going to attack Amalek may lead to further disaster. It is also possible that David knew that he needed to save the people, but he was concerned that his troops were distraught. He asks God if he should go, knowing full well God would say yes. The \u2018yes\u2019 was not for David, but for the troops. Hearing God support the counterattack helps rally the troops and secure the victory.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Throughout Tanach we learn lessons on leadership from both major and minor characters:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2022Moses demonstrated how to choose a successor by stipulating that he must be able to serve each member of the community as a unique personality (Numbers 27); how to target a message to an audience by contextualizing the word of God for his followers (Deuteronomy 5) and how to allow for compromise while maintaining the integrity of the law by distinguishing between what is \u201cright\u201d and what is \u201cgood\u201d (Deuteronomy 6);<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2022The early Judges unified the tribes in order to achieve a national inheritance (Judges 16); and<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2022Samuel evoked a revolutionary shift in the national consciousness by bringing the Israelites to a state of spiritual readiness to be led (Samuel 7).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In all of these instances the lessons are under the surface of the story, sometimes only illuminated by commentaries. But in this chapter David does something that is not only explicit in its illustration of leadership but lays the foundation for what became \u201c<\/span>a statute and an ordinance for Israel until this day (verse 25).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Earlier in this chapter we read of a young Egyptian slave who became ill and was abandoned by his troop and left to die. When he was no longer able to participate actively with the community he was no longer of any value. In juxtaposition to this episode, when the men of David\u2019s army suggested that their war booty be shared by only those who actively engaged in battle, David invoked a principle of social equity. No, David said, those who were too weak to go into battle are still an integral part of the community, and we take care of them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On their way to battle the Amalek, who had pillaged David\u2019s community of Ziklag while David and his men were on the battlefield, 200 of David\u2019s 600 men are too weary to cross the Besor River. David and the other 400 go on to win the battle against the Amalekites, declaring the spoils their own. A number of the 400 men argue, with apparent cogency, that only they should receive a share in the spoils of war, not the 200 who remained behind. After all, they reason, only those who risked their lives should receive a share in the booty. What is more, we might add, if the loot following a battle goes equally to those who stay back and \u201cguard the vessels\u201d and those who fight on the battlefield, that might disincentivize future soldiers from placing their lives on the line.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet King David fiercely opposes this proposal, insisting that all the soldiers divide the loot equally, and the text goes so far as to refer to those who make the suggestion as \u201cmean and churlish fellows\u201d (v. 22).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What is the basis for David\u2019s opposition to their seemingly reasonable proposal? He explains that the 400 men\u2019s recommendation is rooted in a fundamentally erroneous assumption: it is not the men themselves who are responsible for the victory, but \u201cthe Lord [who] has granted us, guarding us and delivering into our hands the band that attacked us.\u201d On this view, it is equally the men who fought, and those who stood guard, who partnered with God in bringing about the victory.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The classical commentator R. David Kimhi sharpens the point. Remarkably, not a single Israelite died in battle, and the verses suggest that all but 400 young Amalekites were killed. We may deduce that not only did every Israelite soldier survive, but they were massively outnumbered: compare the 400 soldiers who totaled David\u2019s entire force, with the 400 who are described as a mere fraction of the Amalekite soldiers who had fought in the battle. Accordingly, the soldiers had every opportunity to recognize the hand of God in their victory, yet they failed in precisely this regard. It is for this intentional spiritual blindness - and perhaps arrogance - that David dismisses these men as \u201cmean and churlish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The greatness of David was his constant ability to recognize that his powers were ultimately not his own, but came from God. His charge as a leader is to model that recognition for others - and, ultimately, for us, devoted students of the biblical text.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our chapter continues the narrative of David\u2019s flight from Saul, which now centers around the town of Ziklag. David received this place when he fled to the Philistines and came to King Achish who \u201cgranted him Ziklag; that is how Ziklag came to belong to the kings of Judah, as is still the case\u201d (I Samuel 27:2-6, I Chronicles 12:1). But: <\/span><\/p>\r\n

by the time David and his men arrived in Ziklag, on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid into the Negeb and against Ziklag; they had stormed Ziklag and burned it down. They had taken the women in it captive \u2026 When David and his men came to the town and found it burned down, and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive, David and the troops with him broke into tears\u2026 (30:1-4). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

But later in our chapter, we read: <\/span><\/p>\r\n

David rescued everything the Amalekites had taken; David also rescued his two wives. Nothing of theirs was missing\u2014young or old, sons or daughters, spoil or anything else that had been carried off\u2014David recovered everything (verses 18-19).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ziklag has been mentioned previously as having been first in the tribal area of Judah (Joshua 15:31, I Chronicles 4:30) but then in the tribal area assigned to Simeon (Joshua 19:5). Ziklag returned to be in the tribal area of Judah after the Return from the First Exile (Nehemiah 11:28).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

For many readers of modern Hebrew literature, Ziklag would be associated with the stream of consciousness novel Yemei Tziklag<\/em> (Days of Ziklag) first published in 1958 in two volumes totaling 1156 pages, for which its author, S. Yizhar won the Israel Prize in 1959. The novel describes 48 days during the 1947\u20131949 War of Independence in which it follows a squad of Palmah soldiers trying to hold a godforsaken post in the Negev desert. The story's stream of consciousness focuses on the inner worlds of the soldiers, both during and between battles. The story is based on the real-life battle for Hurvat Ma'achaz<\/em> fought by the Yiftah Brigade in October 1948, although the battle is never mentioned by name. Well into the novel, one of the soldiers, Barzilai, identifies the hill they are defending with the biblical town of Ziklag, and though he and the others quickly realize this identification is incorrect, the name Ziklag sticks.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The correct geographical location of Ziklag had been debated by biblical scholars for generations. But recently, in excavations carried out by the Israel Antiquities Authority and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Ziklag has been identified with the archaeological site of Khirbet a-Ra\u2018i in the Judaean foothills, near Kiryat Gat, 35 miles south of Tel Aviv. This claim has already been challenged by other Israeli biblical archaeologists and will, no doubt, continue to be a subject of on-going scholarly debate (<\/span>see this previous post on this topic<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And so, we might say that the \u201cDays of Ziklag\u201d have now begun yet again.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this chapter, David returned to Ziklag to discover that, in his absence, Amalekite raiders had attacked the town and carried off his wives, among others, as captives. After obtaining divine assurance of success (a fixture of those days, cf. 14:37, 22:10, 23:2, 28:6), he set out in pursuit, He then discovered an Egyptian slave, abandoned by his Amalekite master on account of his weakness (and, presumably, his inability to keep up the pace of the march). David nursed him to health. The lad repaid David\u2019s kindness by agreeing to reveal the location of the Amalekites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

David successfully counterattacked and retrieved his wives and considerable spoils. A question then arose: Were the 200 men who stayed in the camp and did not actively participate in the battle entitled to a share of those spoils? The 400 active warriors* were inclined to deny them a share but David stipulated that \u201cas is the share of one who goes down to the battle, so shall be the share of one who tarries by the baggage; they shall share alike\u201d (24).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The equity evident in this ruling was so impressive that Scripture tells us that this practice became SOP for Israelite armies \u201cto this very day\u201d (25).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is also significant that David dispatched a part of those same spoils to \u201cthe elders of Judah\u201d (26) to be distributed amongst nearby towns that\u2014ostensibly\u2014had suffered at the hands of the Amalekites, whether out of the same sense of equity or as a practical way of obtaining their good will.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

*It is tempting to suggest that the 400 active warriors were those who were in David\u2019s company since he first entered Achish\u2019s service (chapter 21), while the 200 who \u201ctarried\u201d joined him only after he returned to that service later (chapter 27). As several interpreters have observed, there is an antithetical contrast here between David, who has priest and ephod to convey to him God\u2019s oracular counsel, and Saul, who, frustrated in all his attempts to discover God\u2019s intentions, resorts to forbidden necromancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. David\u2019s hot line<\/em>. David asks of God whether he shall be successful in his pursuit and battle. He receives even more than he asks for: \u201cDavid inquired of the LORD, \u2018Shall I pursue those raiders? Will I overtake them?\u2019 And He answered him, \u201c\u2018Pursue, for you shall overtake and you shall rescue\u2019\u201d (verse 8). This shows us once again the gap between David and Saul, who two chapters ago (28) couldn\u2019t get God to respond to him in any of the available channels.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. An energy boost<\/em>. That\u2019s what David\u2019s men give the Egyptian boy who hadn\u2019t eaten for three days: \u201cThey gave him food to eat and water to drink; he was also given a piece of pressed fig cake and two cakes of raisins. He ate and regained his strength\u201d (verses 11, 12). Saving him was a good investment. The Egyptian boy who was almost starved to death by his cruel Amalekite master who left him sick in the field, is willing to cooperate and turn in the whole troop\u2026<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. The source of the law<\/em>. David, who isn\u2019t the official king yet, and is not a prophet of God, decides the law regarding equity in the distribution of the spoils of war, between the warriors and those who stay back in support (verses 23-25).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Forward-thinking<\/em>. The gifts that David sends to the elders of Judah are a confidence building measure in preparation for a new political reality, where David won\u2019t be a company commander in the service of the Philistines, but the new king.
