David at first lives in the capital before making a request for a set area of his own. This is similar to the request that Joseph made to Pharaoh. In response to his request, “Achish granted him Ziklag; that is how Ziklag came to belong to the kings of Judah, as is still the case” (verse 6).

There are two problems with this verse. The first is that Ziklag is already mentioned as the dominion of the tribe of Judah in Joshua (15:31 and 19:5). The simple answer is that Ziklag was under Judean control until Achish and the Philistines conquered it. Now that Achish gives it to David, it will remain his possession. The other possibility is that there were multiple towns named Ziklag. The two times it is mentioned in Joshua, the town is listed as part of two different tribes. In 15, it belonged to Judah and in 19,it belonged to Shimon. In 15, the city is grouped with two others: Madmannah and Sansannah. In 19, it is listed with Beth-marcaboth and Hazar-susah. This could mean that there were two cities each close to two different cities. It is possible then that this Ziklag is a third city.

The second problem is the end of the verse. Many times in Tanach the narrator will jump in to explain that a certain city name exists “until this day.” That phrase is somewhat ambiguous as it does not explain until which day. But verse 6 is different. It specifically says the kings of Judah. What makes this problematic is that the Kings of Judah were not a thing until a couple of centuries later under the reign of David’s grandson. This could mean that a later author, possibly Hezekiah who wrote certain books of Tanach, added this footnote to the verse. It is possible that the note refers to the period when David was solely the king of Judah, before he unified the nation under his rule. The problem there is that the verse refers to kings in the plural, and David was the only king of Judah until his grandson. It is possible then that the author had wishful thinking and believed that the town would continue in the hands of the Davidic line.

image: Michal Ben Hamu / Ziklag is mentioned in this chapter as the city given to David to dwell in by King Achish, son of Maoch of Gat, when David runs away yet again from King Saul, this time taking six hundred men with him, and heading towards the Philistines, hoping Saul will not be looking for him there.

Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai Zerachia (1724-1806), known by his acronym as the ChiDA writes in his book the Chochmat Anach that Ziglag was named so because in traditional Hebrew letter-number equivalencies, known as “gematria,” עיר צקלג the City of Ziklag equals 503 which is exactly (almost) the sum of the forefathers’ lifespans: Abraham – 175; Isaac – 180; and Jacob – 147. But in this chapter, we see another side to the great leader: as he journeys from Israel to the land of the Philistines, his political savvy is on full display. Specifically, knowing the Akhish was an enemy of the Israelities, David takes every opportunity to proactively dispel any notion that he might seek to harm the king.

To begin, David arrives accompanied by some 600 men, making it clear, as Malbim notes, that he was not coming as a spy. What is more, the verse stresses that David came with his family. This suggests that David came not to plunder the area and flee, but to settle peacefully with his family. After all, if his intentions were not peaceful, why would he bring his family and risk their lives?

David then requests to live not in the capital city but in a city surrounded by fields. Why does he specifically exclude the possibility of living in a walled city? By leaving himself fully exposed, David signaled his peaceful intentions.

David goes on to pillage Geshurite, Gizrite and Amalakite cities.
