Chapter 26 plays out almost the same way as chapter 24. Saul and his forces close in on David. In the middle of the night, David sneaks into Saul\u2019s camp. David has the opportunity to kill Saul, but instead steals his spear and his water jug. Just as he did in chapter 24, David goes up the nearest hill and calls out to Saul and shows him once again that he had a chance to kill Saul, but did not. He also takes a moment to get a dig in against Abner, Saul\u2019s general, for not protecting the king.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Saul\u2019s cloak was symbolic in chapter 24, and Saul\u2019s spear is symbolic here. The spear appears a few times in I Samuel. The first is in chapter 13:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Thus on the day of the battle, no sword or spear was to be found in the possession of any of the troops with Saul and Jonathan; only Saul and Jonathan had them\u201d (13:22).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here the spear is symbolic of the power of kingship. Only Saul and his son are given the power denied to everyone else. The spear next appears in the story of Goliath. The text takes time to explain that Goliath\u2019s spear was the length of a weaving beam. The spear once again is a symbol of strength, this time the enemy\u2019s strength. Yet David is able to defeat Goliath despite his powerful spear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In chapters 18-20, Saul tries in vain to kill David by pinning him to the wall with his spear. Saul clings to the spear. In chapter 22, he holds the spear with him while he holds court under the tamarisk tree, and in chapter 26, he sleeps with the spear right at his side. Saul believes that the spear makes him powerful. By capturing the spear David shows him that the spear holds no real power. In the throne room, he was the only one with a spear, but it was not enough to defeat David. In chapter 24, when David takes part of Saul\u2019s cloak he takes a symbol of his kingship and in chapter 26 when he takes his spear he takes a symbol of Saul\u2019s power. Saul does not learn the lesson of Goliath that mere symbolic power is not enough. A spear cannot defeat the other anointed of God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

David receives another opportunity to kill his pursuer Saul, but he again declines to do any harm to the king, \u201cthe anointed one of God.\u201d This would have been the simplest case of self-defense; Saul was leading an army of 3,000 men in search of David, but David ordered his nephew Avishai to stand down, warning, \u201cwho has ever cast a hand against the anointed one of God and been guiltless?\u201d Instead, David takes a spear and water jug from the sleeping Saul and, like a valiant<\/span> \u201cwhite hat\u201d hacker<\/span><\/a>, dutifully informs Saul\u2019s men of their security failure: \u201cWhy have you not guarded your master the king, when any anonymous one of the people (\u201c<\/span>ahad ha-am<\/span><\/em>\u201d) could have come to destroy the king your master.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In 1889, early Zionist intellectual Asher Ginsberg adopted <\/span>Ahad ha-Am<\/span><\/em> as a pen name for his first published essay,<\/span> explaining<\/span><\/a>, \u201cI am no author and have no intention to ever enter the community of authors, and only incidentally am I revealing my opinion in this matter, as an anonymous one of the people whose spirit is engaged with the concerns of the people.\u201d Decades later and widely regarded as one of the great Zionist thinkers, Ahad ha-Am was still writing under the same name.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ahad ha-Am did not explicitly tie his identity to the <\/span>ahad ha-am<\/span><\/em> invoked by David here or to the one referred to by King Avimelekh in Genesis 26:10. But his name was his destiny, and in time <\/span>Ahad ha-Am <\/span>became known for \u201ccoming to destroy the king.\u201d\u00a0 Ahad ha-Am relentlessly criticized the political Zionism of his nemesis Theodor Herzl, deriding the movement as overly preoccupied with power and insufficiently concerned with the sacred ideas of Jewish spirit and culture. He condemned Herzl\u2019s efforts to enlist support for a sovereign Jewish state by conducting diplomacy with world leaders, and he called upon the message of the Prophets, who<\/span> \u201csought with all their might to ensure that the ends would never be subjugated to the means and the \u2018flesh\u2019 would never rule over the spirit.\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

To the extent Ahad ha-Am saw any value in a Jewish state, he wanted it to be guided by its prophets, not its kings.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Of course, Ahad ha-Am did not \u201cdestroy the king,\u201d and he remains a footnote in the story of the triumph of political Zionism. The <\/span>ahad ha-am<\/span><\/em> of David\u2019s imagination also failed to harm the king, because David himself intervened, not out of concern for Saul in particular but because of his zeal for the institution of the \u201canointed one of God,\u201d the institution he and his descendants were chosen to The towering, rich, and complex character of David rightfully dominates most studies of the book of Samuel.\u00a0 But David does not operate alone, and the book contains many secondary characters of equal depth and complexity.\u00a0 In a series of posts beginning with this one, I hope to analyze one such character: Joab\/Yoav son of Zeruiah.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When the Bible first mentions Joab, in I Samuel 26:6, he slips in almost unnoticed.\u00a0 \u201cDavid spoke up and asked Ahimelech the Hittite and Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab\u2019s brother, \u2018Who will go down with me into the camp to Saul?\u2019 And Abishai answered, \u2018I will go down with you.\u2019\u201d The first time Joab is mentioned, the verse is introducing his brother, not him. Joab himself is, from a literary perspective, already there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This brief mention, however, does foreshadow some important things about Joab.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

For one thing, Joab\u2019s fate is closely intertwined with his family, particularly his brothers Abishai and Asahel. Their close fraternal ties will influence the course of major episodes on the road to David\u2019s kingship, and highlight the difficulty in separating the personal from the political in the book of Samuel. If we note that I Chron. 2:16, Joab\u2019s mother Zeruiah is identified as David\u2019s sister (making Joab and his brothers David\u2019s nephews), the personal, familial layer of the palace intrigues that develop over the book is even more pronounced.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Joab\u2019s presence in this story that is not really about him foreshadows Joab\u2019s ubiquity in the drama to come. Although Joab frequently goes unmentioned for several chapters in a row, he seems to be always lurking, reappearing to intervene when he feels the moment demands it. Joab is always already there, observing, influencing, and taking action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Who is Joab?\u00a0 What are his values?\u00a0 How does he come to play such a central role?\u00a0 Does he deserve his fate? In a series of posts on the chapters in which Joab appears, I hope to dig deeper into these questions and more. Next stop: II Sam. Had we not known better, we might think that Saul\u2019s deranged pursuit of David has finally come to an end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

David again has the ability to kill King Saul, and again he decides against it, declaring that he \u201cwould not raise a hand against the Lord\u2019s anointed\u201d (v. 23). Instead, he calls out to Avner, Saul\u2019s commander-in-chief, accusing the general of having failed in his duty to protect the king. Saul hears David\u2019s voice, and is overcome with emotion. David pleads with the king to stop pursuing him: Why does my lord continue to pursue his servant? What have I done, and what wrong am I guilty of?\u201d (v. 18) Saul is finally convinced, and declares with conviction, \u201cI am in the wrong. Come back, my son David, for I will never harm you again, seeing how you have held my life precious this day. Yes, I have been a fool, and I have erred so very much\u201d (v. 21). The chapter concludes, \u201cDavid then went his way, and Saul returned home\u201d (v. 25). Even if it is not quite a storybook ending, it seems that the conflict has been resolved.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet the following chapter opens with David fleeing for his life yet again, this time into the land of the Philistines, beyond the borders of Israel. What happened? Is Saul condemned to pursue David to the death? Is he monomaniacal, Captain Ahab to David the hunted prey? God\u2019s spirit has been removed from Saul; perhaps he is destined against his will to sheer insanity.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A partial answer may reveal itself in our chapter\u2019s final verse, which strikingly parallels a passage in the book of Genesis. After Abraham unsuccessfully pleads with God not to destroy Sodom and its surrounding cities, the Torah states, \u201cWhen the Lord had finished speaking to Abraham, He departed; and Abraham returned to his place\u201d (Gen. 18:33). The language is almost identical to our verse, in which David goes on his way, and Saul returns to his place.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The implication of the verse in Genesis is that Abraham, having exhausted all his options and failed to sway God\u2019s mind, ultimately retreats. Extending the analogy to Saul, the implication is that when the text writes that \u201cSaul returned to his place,\u201d it is not a mere geographical description, but a psychological one. Saul genuinely desired to be swayed by David\u2019s moving words, but he failed, remaining irrationally implacable. Try as he might, Saul was unable to overcome the jealousy-driven impulse toward violence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As opposed to David, who feigns madness (chap. 21), Saul is the true madman. Yet this does not mean that he bears no responsibility. By having sinned against God and forfeited the kingdom, he not only gave up his royal position but also inverted his relationship with God. No longer endowed by a healthy, divine spirit, he is overtaken by a spirit of madness. However moving the words of David, Saul has sealed his own fate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

You may recall that there was some ambiguity regarding David\u2019s initial introduction to Saul. As we pointed out at that time (chapters 16-17), David first appears before Saul as a lute player who succeeded in calming him whenever he was possessed of \u201can evil spirit\u201d (16:23). It was surprising, then, to discover in the very next chapter that as David defeated Goliath and decapitated him, Saul turned to Abner, his chief of staff, and asked \u201cwho is this lad\u2019s father?\u201d and Abner replied \u201cI swear I have no idea\u201d (17:55). When David eventually appeared before Saul, Goliath\u2019s head in hand, the king asked him directly and he replied \u201cI am your servant David son of Jesse the Bethlehemite\u201d (57). An exegetical suggestion to resolve this contradiction focuses on the emphasis placed on obtaining the name of David\u2019s father. While David was assumedly well-known to Saul and his entourage, his remarkable victory over Goliath invited some sort of royal promotion and that required knowledge of his lineage.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Subsequently, we got another, albeit oblique, glimpse into Saul\u2019s preoccupation with parentage when he rebuked his own son Jonathan as a \u201cson of perverse rebellion\u201d who, on account of his friendship with and support for David, was guilty of \u201cshaming your mother\u2019s nakedness\u201d (20:30).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this chapter, we can obtain yet another perspective. While David continued to refer to his relationship with Saul as one of servitude to a master (17, 18, 19), Saul referred to David three times as \u201cmy son\u201d (17, 21, 25).\u00a0 Having previously declared David a traitorous rebel and put a price on his head, Saul now seems to exhibit a greater paternal affinity towards his erstwhile nemesis than he has displayed towards his own offspring.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

NB -\u00a0<\/span>In addressing Saul, David made a strange accusation against his pursuers, claiming that \u201c[a] they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave unto the inheritance of the Lord, saying: [b] Go, serve other gods\u201d (19).   1. Similar but different<\/span><\/i>. Two days ago, in chapter 24, a similar event occurred. The same elements: A near-miraculous opportunity to kill Saul. David, in contrast to his men, is adamant that they avoid that at all costs. A symbolic act to prove to Saul just how close they were. Finally, an emotional exchange, full of regret. Now - find the differences. That\u2019s the interesting part.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. But why??<\/span><\/i> David presents Saul\u2019s pursuit of him as completely irrational and senseless, since David has harmed him in no way (verse 18). So if there\u2019s no logic to this chase - why is it happening at all? In verse 19 David looks for the alleged guilty parties, and even suggests how to get rid of them: \u201cIf the LORD has incited you against me, let Him be appeased by an offering; but if it is men, may they be accursed of the LORD!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. His last words.<\/span><\/i> Saul\u2019s parting blessing to David in verse 25 are the last words that he will speak to him.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Points in heaven, even if not with Saul<\/span><\/i>. David doesn\u2019t trust that Saul\u2019s regret will last and end up saving him.
