The verse states: \u201cAs the ancient parable says: From the wicked comes forth wickedness.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With regard to what is the verse (Exodus 21:13) speaking? With regard to two people who killed human beings, where one killed unintentionally while the other killed intentionally. For this there are no witnesses, and for that there are no witnesses. The Holy One, Blessed be He, summons them to one inn. This person who killed intentionally, sits beneath a ladder, and that person who killed unintentionally descends the ladder, and falls upon him and kills him <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before witnesses<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). That person who killed intentionally is killed, and that person who killed unintentionally is exiled (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to a city of refuge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Radak, if we accept the interpretation of Resh Lakish, the text, in addition to implying that David is declaring himself to be a righteous individual who would never do any harm to Saul, it is also subtly criticizing the king by categorizing him as an evildoer:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as those who are evil in their hearts will carry out evil deeds\u2026 I (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) recognize your heart (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saul<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you will never have compassion for me should I fall into your hands<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nevertheless, I will do you no harm. And the Rabbis have explained that this is a parable of the Creator of the world, this one deserved to die (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the person who killed deliberately<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), but He distributes benefits via the innocent, and detriments by means of the guilty. Therefore, God will seek to avenge your treatment of me from you through an evil doer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but not by me, because my hands will not go against you.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While David\u2019s words could be interpreted as self-serving, i.e., if someone is not pleased with him once he becomes king, by acting directly against him, they would be defining themselves as evildoers, we also gain a tremendous sense of how David was deeply deferential to the office, despite his animosity due to his ill-treatment by the one occupying it (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see v. 6<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: Saul is laying in the cave fast asleep. David enters the cave with sword in hand and has the chance to kill Saul. It is unclear what Saul would have done in this same situation, but based on his actions to date, he would not have hesitated to kill David. David decides against ending his troubles, and instead cuts off a corner of Saul\u2019s cloak. He runs outside the cave and from a safe distance he lifts up\u00a0 the cut corner and calls out to Saul.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saul sees that David could have killed him but did not, and asks David for forgiveness. He also admits for the first time that: \u201cI know now that you will become king, and that the kingship over Israel will remain in your hands\u201d (verse 21). Why does this act of David cause Saul to say this?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robes are extremely symbolic in the book of Samuel. Samuel\u2019s mother makes him a cloak to wear in the Temple when she drops him off. When Saul fails to kill Agag, he tears Samuel\u2019s cloak as the prophet walks away. Jonathan pledges his loyalty to David by removing his clock and giving it to David. When Saul tries to capture David near the young prophets, he removes his cloak while crying out in prophetic ecstasy. David cut off Saul\u2019s cloak as a way to show the king that David was close enough to kill him, but he did not.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David\u2019s reason is that he would not want to kill the man anointed by God. The irony of course, is that David too is an anointed of God. Saul may have finally realized this message when he saw the ripped cloak. He must have had a flashback to the ripped cloak of Samuel. This devastating memory may have shaken him awake from his rage to remember that this transition was from God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But David does not walk away unscathed from this encounter. He doesn\u2019t dismiss David as an enemy, he doesn\u2019t treat him like a rebel. He calls him \u2018<em>beni<\/em>\u2019, my son. He invites him to say \u2018yes, it is my voice,\u2019 and thus accept this designation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how can David answer in the affirmative, when Saul\u2019s \u2018<em>beni<\/em>\u2019 could mean so many different things? The word \u2018<em>beni<\/em>\u2019 might express an emotional truth, or simply refer to David\u2019s status as Saul\u2019s son-in-law. It might even mean nothing more than an impulse of the moment, a knee-jerk response to David\u2019s usage of \u2018<em>avi<\/em>\u2019, \u2018my father\u2019, in his address. Furthermore: can David access the meaning of Saul\u2019s \u2018<em>beni<\/em>\u2019, when his experiences of being a son are vastly different than Saul\u2019s?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our first glimpse of Saul focused on his connection to his father: \u201cThere was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish son of Abiel\u2026 a man of substance.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had a son whose name was Saul, an excellent young man\u201d (9:1-2). Kish set Saul on his path to greatness by sending him to seek lost asses, and worried when his son failed to return. We never see David\u2019s father expressing similar emotions; in fact, \u201cour first glimpse of David is his absence\u201d from his father\u2019s house and mind (David Wolpe, David: The Divided Heart, p.1 ). Jesse didn\u2019t include David in his meeting with Samuel, didn\u2019t reveal his youngest son\u2019s existence until the prophet asked him if he had more sons, and didn\u2019t summon him until Samuel explicitly demanded to meet this absent boy. Throughout this exchange, Jesse never mentioned his youngest son by name. Before we know anything about David himself, before we even know his name ,we know that his father kept him at a distance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever Saul meant by saying \u2018<em>beni<\/em>\u2019 would have been influenced by his own experiences. But whatever David might have heard within this word would have been shaped by his own. How can he answer in the affirmative, when he can\u2019t access the world of associations and meanings that shapes this word on Saul\u2019s lips? How can he accept this open hand, and build a bridge across uncrossable divides?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saul\u2019s question remains unanswered, and the word \u2018<em>beni<\/em>\u2019 echoes over the deep divides it cannot bridge. One day, David will cry this word when he himself will battle a beloved rebel. At times of drama, they artfully deploy linguistic and thematic motifs from other biblical books to illuminate the textual unity of the Tanakh and give us keys for how to read its stories.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s chapter is a stunning example. Its heart is the moment when Saul recognizes David, holding a shred of Saul\u2019s cloak in his hand. David shows Saul that he could easily have killed him a moment earlier in the cave and that Saul\u2019s suspicions of David\u2019s hostility are therefore baseless. Saul admits the truth and breaks down in grief and contrition.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recounting this encounter, the author unleashes a blizzard of references to stories in Genesis.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, after David\u2019s speech protesting his innocence, Saul answers in amazement, \u201cIs that your voice, my son David?\u201d (v.16) echoing Isaac\u2019s \u201cthe voice is the voice of Jacob,\u201d when his younger son comes to him disguised in Esau\u2019s clothes. Then in the same verse, Saul \u201clifts up his voice and weeps,\u201d the exact words used to describe Esau\u2019s weeping in the same Genesis story when he realizes that Jacob has taken his blessing.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, Saul then says to David, \u201cyou are more righteous than me.\u201d (v.17) These are almost the precise words that Judah uses in Genesis 38 when confronted by his daughter-law Tamar. She had also disguised herself; at that moment Judah recognizes that his suspicions of her were false.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third, Saul admits \u201cyou did me good, but I did you evil,\u201d (v.17) reminding one of Joseph\u2019s words to his brothers, \u201cwhile you thought to do me evil, God thought to do good.\u201d (Gen. 50:20) Here is yet another story of self-revelation after Joseph has disguised himself from his brothers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourth, David holds out the piece of Saul\u2019s cloak up as evidence of his guiltlessness, as Potiphar\u2019s wife holds up Joseph\u2019s cloak. To her husband this is testimony to his guilt, but to readers it is evidence of his hasty flight and innocence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are we to make of this excess of intertextuality? The Genesis stories show people who dress up, dissimulate, hide and sometimes morally compromise themselves in pursuit of a larger kind of justice, truthfulness or integrity. They raise hard questions about the elusive nature of authenticity and the limits of deception to pursue justifiable ends. Their denouement involves simultaneously the recognition of someone who has been disguised and the acknowledgement of that person\u2019s basic honesty despite the accommodations they have made with a tricky reality.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his flight from Saul\u2019s murderous rage, David has lied to Ahimelech that he is on a mission from the King, pretended to be a madman, and arguably through another deception, been indirectly responsible for the massacre of the priests of Nob. The subterfuges of the heroes of Genesis are nothing next to David\u2019s. (v. 5) Why does he not act in self-defense? As a way of accounting for his behavior, David\u2019s constant refrain is that Saul is the anointed of God (v. 7). For David, to kill God\u2019s chosen is inconceivable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, morally speaking, this seems odd. Saul was God\u2019s anointed, but he was told that he had forfeited the throne to David. And in any case, if the anointed of God seeks to murder me in cold blood, may I not raise a weapon in self-defense?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leads us to wonder if there might have been an additional, unstated motivation behind David\u2019s seemingly unopportunistic behavior. After all, it wasn\u2019t just that Saul was the anointed one; he and David were also rivals for the same throne. On a political level, if David is seen as Saul\u2019s killer, it could easily motivate Saul\u2019s supporters to oppose David\u2019s rise to power, weakening any future claim David might stake to the throne. Further, on the level of personal morals, David may have recognized that to kill his bitter rival might have ultimately amounted to vengeance rather than mere self-defense.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Echoing this latter possibility, elsewhere in the Jewish tradition we encounter the concern that we may not act legitimately for fear of being motivated by feelings of hate. As the First Chief Rabbi of Mandate Palestine, Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook (1865-1935), put it in regard to the impossibility of Pinhas\u2019 killing of the sinful Zimri as a model for future generations:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The act of zealotry regarding \u201cOne who lies with a non-Jewess, zealous ones may assault him,\u201d is a law that is not taught. It cannot be carried out without full intent, which is pure and clean of any personal bias. It must not have mixed in any spark of murder, for it is performed not by a Jewish court that adjudicates capital punishment, lacks witnesses, and may only be performed in the moment, and its entire purpose is to extinguish the evil for the sake of heaven. Only under these conditions can an otherwise prohibited act, which impurifies, become a permissible and holy act. (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shemu\u2019ot Ra\u2019aya<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Parshat Pinhas)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same may be said of David. Concerned that he might have an admixture of personal vendetta against Saul - or be perceived as acting on that basis - David refuses to become his killer. Instead, he simply cuts the corner of the king\u2019s cloak, suggesting that even as David remains master of his emotions and need not stoop to violence, eventually he \u201cwill become king, and the One of the proofs we offered was that the torn cloak would later become a tangible symbol of Saul\u2019s acceptance of David\u2019s succession to the monarchy. It is in this chapter that this proof unfolds.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saul, in the company of 3,000 soldiers, pursued David to the Dead Sea region where David took refuge in one of the caves of Ein Gedi\u2014the general area from which the Dead Sea Scrolls would be recovered millennia later. David sought refuge in the recess of the cave, after which Saul went to sleep near its mouth. Although David could have killed Saul as he slept, he merely cut off a corner of Saul\u2019s cloak (4), an act of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l\u00e8se majest\u00e9<\/span> <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that he subsequently regretted (5-6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Saul left the cave, David displayed the torn piece as evidence that Saul\u2019s life had been in his hands and he declined to take it (11), invoking an \u201cancient proverb\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meshal hakadmoni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to the effect that \u201cevil emanates [only] from the wicked\u201d (13). The sound of David\u2019s voice moved Saul to tears (16)\u2014perhaps reminding him of David\u2019s earlier lute playing and singing\u2014and he admitted that he had treated David badly (17).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, Saul made an astonishing admission: \u201cI know that you will surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established by your hand\u201d (20). What accounts for this sudden acknowledgement that David would be king? Rashi offered two explanations, one <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peshat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (contextual) and the second <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">derash<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (homiletic). \u201c[a] For I see that the Holy One, Blessed is He, saved you from my hand. [b] The Midrash Aggadah states that Samuel gave him this sign, that the one who tears his robe will reign after him.\u201d With all due deference to Rashi, I think that latter explanation is no less <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peshat<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> justified by the larger context, than the In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. In a wonderfully dramatic scene, King Saul enters the same cave to relieve himself. David\u2019s men urge him to take this apparently \u201cGod-given\u201d opportunity to kill Saul, who has been seeking to kill David. But \u201cDavid went and stealthily cut off the corner of Saul\u2019s cloak\u2026He said to his men, \u2018The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my lord\u2014the Lord\u2019s anointed\u2014that I should raise my hand against him; for he is the Lord\u2019s anointed.\u2019 David rebuked his men and did not permit them to attack Saul\u201d (24:5-8).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Saul leaves the cave, David calls after him that he could well have killed him: \u201cMay the Lord judge between you and me! And may He take vengeance upon you for me, but my hand will never touch you. As the ancient proverb has it: \u2018Wicked deeds come from wicked men!\u2019 My hand will never touch you\u201d (verses 13-14). David\u2019s courageously sparing Saul\u2019s life, when he had a chance, succeeds in assuaging the king\u2019s fear that David will usurp the monarchy. Saul admits: \u201cI know now that you will become king, and that the kingship over Israel will remain in your hands\u201d (verse 21). At the end of our chapter, David and Saul part company reconciled, at least for the moment (verse 23, compare chapter 26 and on).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cancient proverb\u201d (<em>Mashal Ha-Qadmoni<\/em>) \u201cwicked deeds come from wicked men!\u201d is used by David to convince Saul that he has no intention of killing him, for David proclaims that he is not one of the \u201cwicked men\u201d who would take advantage of such a natural human situation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Rashi on I Samuel 24:14, David\u2019s <em>Mashal Ha-Qadmoni<\/em> should be understood as \u201cThe Proverb of the Ancient One of the World (<em>Qadmono shel \u2018Olam<\/em>), the Torah, which is the Proverb of the Holy One, Blessed be He\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Midrash (Song of Songs Rabbah 1:1) elaborates on this and other biblical proverbs: \u201cYou find cases of a righteous father begetting a righteous son, a wicked father begetting a wicked son, a righteous father begetting a wicked son, and a wicked father begetting a righteous son. And each finds confirmation in a verse of Scripture, in a proverb, and in a rhetorical expression (<em>melitzah<\/em>)\u2026That a wicked father may beget a wicked son finds confirmation in Scripture, as it says: \u201cAnd now you, a breed of sinful men, have replaced your fathers, to add still further to the Lord\u2019s wrath against Israel\u201d (Numbers 32:14). This is further confirmed in a proverb: \u201cAs the ancient proverb has it: \u2018Wicked deeds come from wicked men!\u2019\u201d (I Samuel 24:14). And anyone who has ever hiked there today can understand why.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutting corners<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The symbolic wardrobe of the Book of Samuel includes not only the cloaks of prophets, and the robes of kingship, but also shreds. The swatch that Saul tore from Samuel\u2019s coat 8 chapters ago is joined now by the corner of Saul\u2019s robe that David stealthily removes.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My lord, my father, the king, the anointed one of God<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is with all these that David addresses Saul, communicating a message of conciliation, expressing a broad range of emotions.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David\u2019s adages and similes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. David tries to convince Saul of the irrationality of pursuing him. He uses an ancient proverb (v. 14) and also a lively (or deadly) simile: \u201cWhom are you pursuing? A dead dog? A single flea?\u201d (v. 15).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will David keep his vow?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Depends on which chapter you\u2019re reading.
