The main character is not a person. It is the Ark of the Covenant. The Philistines capture the Ark and place it in the temple of Dagon. Maybe this is the same temple that Samson destroyed. Each morning, the great statue of Dagon (either a fish god- connected to the Hebrew word dag, or a god of the harvest connected to the Hebrew word- dagan) is damaged. The Philistines then move the Ark to another town where everyone is inflicted with hemorrhoids or rats or both.

The text itself has a word that is written one way, and meant to be read another (keri and ketiv). Rashi explains that the word is related to rats. When the Philistines were using the restroom, rats would crawl into their exposed parts and damage their bowels. Radak explains that this was a plague that caused constipation due to inflammation inside the body. Why hemorrhoids? The only other time this word appears outside this story is in the verses of rebuke in Deuteronomy. “God will strike you with the Egyptian inflammation, with hemorrhoids, boil-scars, and itch, from which you shall never recover” (Deuteronomy 28:27). The list includes different types of boils and skin inflammation (with the most famous the Egyptian kind from the plagues). Hemorrhoids are connected to these boils as they are an internal inflammation. Chizkuni explains that these were an internal disease that could not be cured by normal medical means.

Perhaps this verse offers two explanations for this punishment. The first is that God wanted to inflict the Philistines for something that would match what they were doing. The Philistines took that Ark and tried to keep it inside their holy places away from Israelites. In response, God afflicts them inside their bodies in a place that is difficult to get to. The other possibility has to do with a concern the Philistines expressed in chapter 4: “’Woe to us! Who will save us from the power of this mighty God? He is the same God who struck the Egyptians with every kind of plague in the wilderness!’” (4:8). There, the Philistines feared God when the Ark was brought to battle. Now that they captured it, they thought they had defeated and captured the God of the Israelites. In return, God punished them like the Egyptians. “For that night I will go through the land of Egypt and strike down every [male] first-born in the land of Egypt, both human and beast; and I will mete out punishments to all the gods of Egypt.” (Exodus 12:12). God “attacks” the gods of the Philistines in the beginning of the chapter, and then attacks the Philistines themselves with the internal boils of Egypt referenced in Deuteronomy.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ps91-plagues-demons.png","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1529,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ps91-plagues-demons.png","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1911
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ps91-plagues-demons.png","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1529,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ps91-plagues-demons.png","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1911
Gary Rendsburg serves as the Blanche and Irving Laurie Professor of Jewish History in the Department of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University. First, it struck down the statue of Dagon in Ashdod (the same god whose temple in Gaza was brought down by Samson, cf. Judges 16) but the Philistines paid it no mind (3). Then it knocked it down again, this time causing its head and hands to fall off while the general population was smitten with hemorrhoids (3-4). It was then moved to Gat whose population was likewise stricken with hemorrhoids (10), so it was moved to Ekron where yet another outbreak of hemorrhoids occurred (12). The only resolution the Philistines offered was to return the Ark whence it came (11) lest it cause a pandemic. In their own words: “Let it go back to its own place, that it slay us not, and our people” (11).

Two things about the divine manner of the Philistines’ chastisement are noteworthy. First of all, God delivered a warning before actually unleashing the grievous plague. It was the obtuseness of the Philistines, who attributed no significance to the initial fall of the Dagon statue, which necessitated a second round of punishment. Secondly, God struck both Dagon and its worshippers just as He had earlier struck both the gods of Egypt and their worshippers (Exodus 12:12), in order to demonstrate the futility of their idolatry.

Whether Raiders” director Steven Spielberg or its writer Lawrence Kasdan took any note of our chapter cannot be determined, but his insinuation that tampering with the Ark unleashed malign forces is consistent with our reading.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/isam5-raiders.jpg","1536x1536-width":758,"1536x1536-height":426,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/isam5-raiders.jpg","2048x2048-width":758,"2048x2048-height":426
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/isam5-raiders.jpg","1536x1536-width":758,"1536x1536-height":426,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/isam5-raiders.jpg","2048x2048-width":758,"2048x2048-height":426
Alex Israel teaches Tanakh at the Pardes Institute, Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi and Matan, Jerusalem. The centralization of political-military authority is admittedly accompanied by priestly anointment and bestowed by the grace of God. But as will become evident as the narrative unfolds, sovereign authority is actually consolidated much less sacramentally, through a hard fought struggle, by tactically ingenious applications of force and fraud deployed to overcome considerable human resistance.

To summarize: A thoroughly human and demythologized political sphere emerged in a space that had been opened between the two basic alternatives that characterized much of the ancient Near East and the prior biblical tradition. That purely human political domain constituted the baseline condition that made possible the book’s distinctive voice and its unblinkingly observant and critical perspective on human politics. In its richly detailed account of this pivotal political breakthrough, the Book of Samuel infused the moment of origin with a deep ambivalence. The narrative notoriously lacks the celebratory features that usually accompany any coronation or heroic founding of a new political regime. Instead, this moment of origin is starkly colored by Samuel’s, and especially God’s, resentment. The pervasive shadow of divine resentment is what differentiates the all-too-human world of biblical politics from a cloudlessly secular or “disenchanted” realm. Our author is acutely aware of the troubles and tragedies of the political endeavor on the one hand and of its irresistible necessity on the other. The entire book is marked by a refusal to shield its readers from this excruciating but truthful ambivalence.

As our exploration widens and deepens, we will address a series of deep puzzles that the Book of Samuel presents. From which point of view, if not that of a political partisan, is the book written? Is the author an insider to politics or an outsider? Is he someone from the court or at its margin? What was the vantage point from which such an astonishingly original book could have been produced? …

…The author does not exactly tell the story from God’s point of view, admittedly. Yet the book was certainly fueled and inspired by what the narrator imagined to be God’s viewpoint…God’s ambivalence toward the political realm permeates the book with its nuanced and exploratory yet smolderingly critical force. Precisely because of its uncomfortable ambivalence, therefore, the Book of Samuel sets forth the proper attitude that should be assumed toward the political project as a whole. Illuminated from this systematically ambivalent stance, politics is seen as an overpowering human necessity that can never fully escape a potentially self-defeating betrayal at its very core.

Excerpts from The Beginning of Politics: Power in the Biblical Book of Samuel – Moshe Halbertal and Stephen Holmes, Princeton University Press, 2017, pp. 14-16. In chapter 5 of I Samuel, the Philistines capture the Ark of God and bring it to three cities. In Ashdod, Gath, and Ekron, respectively, the ark is brought and God’s wrath rains down upon the inhabitants of each city in the form of hemorrhoids, which causes them excruciating pain and eventually leads them to send the ark to the next city.

What significance does this odd affliction of hemorrhoids possess?
