Every man did what was right in his own eyes."

Judges represents, one might say, the Wild West era of the biblical story….There are warriors who can toss a stone from a slingshot at a hair and not miss; a bold left-handed assassin who deftly pulls out a short sword strapped to his right thigh to stab the Moabite king in the soft underbelly; another warrior-chieftain who panics the enemy camp in the middle of the night with the shock and awe of piercing ram's horn blasts and smashed pitchers.

All this is certainly exciting in a way that is analogous to the gunslinger justice of the Wild West, but there is an implicit sense, which becomes explicit at the end of the book, that survival through violence, without a coherent and stable political framework, cannot be sustained and runs the danger of turning into sheer destruction. In the first chapter of the book, before any of the Judges are introduced, we are presented with the image of the conquered Canaanite king, Adoni-Bezek, whose thumbs and big toes are chopped off by his Judahite captors. This barbaric act of dismemberment, presumably intended to disable the king from any capacity for combat, presages a whole series of episodes in which body parts are hacked, mutilated, crushed. King Eglon's death by Ehud's hidden sword is particularly grisly: his killer thrusts the weapon into his belly all the way up to the top of the hilt, and his death spasm grotesquely triggers the malodorous release of the anal sphincter. Women are also adept at this bloody work: there is a vividly concrete report of how Jael drives the tent-peg through the Temple of Sisera the Canaanite general and into the ground; another woman, this one anonymous, smashes the head of the nefarious Abimelech with a millstone she drops on him from her perch in a besieged tower…The grand finale of Samson's story, in which thousands of Philistine men and women, together with the Israelite hero, are crushed by the toppling temple, is an even more extensive crushing and mangling of bodies.

Against this background, one can see a line of imagistic and thematic continuity from the maiming of Adoni-Bezek at the very beginning of the book to the dismembering of the concubine at the end [see chapter 19]. That act of chopping a body into pieces, of course, is intended as a means to unite the tribes against Benjamin and its murderous rapists, but there is a paradoxical tension between the project of unity – unity, however, for a violent purpose – and the butchering of the body, the violation of its integrity, which in the biblical world as in ours was supposed to be respected through burial… After this dark impasse to which the Book of Judges comes, it will be the task of the next great narrative sequence, which is the Book of Samuel, concluding in the second chapter of 1 Kings, to imagine a political means to create a center and lease the anarchy. That goal is in part realized, but… the blood-dimmed tide is never stemmed.

From: Robert Alter, The Hebrew Bible, vol. 2: Prophets, W. When we closed the previous Book, the conquest seemed complete. The tribes were occupying their rightful places, the enemy had been vanquished, Joshua had retired as a lauded and successful warrior, and died peacefully in his own bed. It is a bit of a rude awakening that the new book opens with unraveling and with crisis.

The tribes of Israel, apparently, have not yet completed their assignment. Amorites, Canaanites and others still hold much of the land, and the Israelites are soon to be taken to task for not having taken the land and established peace. A new cycle emerges: oppressed by their enemies, the Israelites call out in fear and suffering. A new chieftain (or judge) emerges from one tribe or another, the people come together in confederation to repulse the new enemies, and then everyone goes home. Eventually, old habits revive and Israelites fall away from a life of covenant, only to strengthen their enemies for another round. Enemies, Judges, conflict and elusive peace: these are the recurrent cycles of the Book of Judges.

So what are we to learn from all the Book of Judges?

That molding a people around a high standard isn’t something that happens once and for all. Moses brought the nascent nation out of Egypt. He shepherded a collection of slaves into the people of Israel. Seamlessly, he transferred his leadership to Joshua. The people knew Joshua from early on. He was the hero of the desert battle with Amalek. He was on Mount Sinai with Moses. He confronted the spies. God sends a “judge” to save the people. The people are peaceful for a little while, but then the cycle begins again. The people would live in the land peacefully. But that’s not what happened. The people sinned with the Golden Calf, and the spies, and continued to sin. (1:1)

The previous book started after a leader’s death, too. But then it was God, and not Joshua, who initiated the conversation. The fact that the Israelites take charge and initiate the next step in their story, not to mention that they do so as a group and not under the guidance of an individual leader, is exciting. It seems to herald the dawn of a new stage in our history, were we the people can be the authors of our fate. (I'm indebted to Yael Ziegler, Ruth: from Alienation to Monarchy, for this point).

Against this grand backdrop, it is easy to interpret the Israelites’ question as a quest for leadership: “who shall go up first,” they ask. Who will lead us forward in this exciting time, we hear.

But the rest of the chapter makes it clear that this wasn’t their intention. The Israelites interpret God’s answer that “Judah shall go up” (Judges 1:2) strictly as a matter of chronological order. Not until King David will the tribe of Judah take responsibility for all the Israelites. For now, Judah deals with its lands first, then leaves most of the other tribes to deal with theirs in turn.

They fail, with disastrous consequences. The children of Israel learn idolatrous practices from the Canaanites they failed to vanquish, and God retaliates by allowing other nations to subjugate them. The community who collectively asked “who shall go up first” collapses into separate tribes, too weak to defend themselves. Instead of taking charge of their own destiny, they are locked into a vicious cycle of idolatry-subjugation-redemption, where individual leaders save them, but by God’s initiative and command.

Perhaps the seeds of this tragedy lie in the narrow interpretation the Israelites gave to their own opening question. They asked as a collective, but were concerned with their divisions, not with their united role. Instead of asking “who should lead us as we step up to the mission of our age” they asked who should toil first. Their later divisions and weakness were a natural consequence of this mindset. By failing to see the promise of their own potential, they doomed themselves to fail at living up to it.

The book of Judges revisits the Israelites’ question towards its ending, where the people ask again “Who shall go up for us first” (Judges 20:18). This second repetition brings the question’s undertones of divisiveness into sharp relief, because the Israelites ask it in a gathering where they are “ knit together as one man, friends” (Judges 20:11)… and preparing to eradicate one of the Israelite tribes.

The Israelites’ failure to see themselves as a united nation in the beginning of Judges reaches, then, its natural culmination: the Israelites step up - In the extended answer to this request, we are told: “And Caleb said, ‘I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriat Sefer’. Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, conquered it. So, Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage” (verses 12-13). Scripture tells us little more about Kenaz (see also Joshua 15:17, 1 Chronicles 4:13, 15 and compare Genesis 36:11, 15, 42 where there is mention of an apparently earlier individual named Kenaz). But the very paucity of information about this little-known biblical figure, seems to have inspired the Jewish imagination to weave a wonderfully rich legend around him.

In a work known as the Biblical Antiquities (Pseudo-Philo), composed originally in Hebrew in the first century CE, we find an extended narrative about Kenaz (Chapters 25-28). After the death of Joshua (Joshua 1:1), Kenaz became prince over Israel. In order to insure victory in the coming battles against the remaining Canaanite enemy, Kenaz first purged sinners from among the Israelite tribes. Among them were the tribe of Dan, who had taught their children out of the forbidden books of the Amorites, which they had hidden under Abraham’s mountain (see Genesis 22:2). Similarly, the tribe of Asher had hidden under Mount Shechem seven golden idols called by the Amorites the “holy nymphs”. These idols were encrusted with precious stones, which radiated light, making night as bright as day. Kenaz burnt all the sinful possessions of the Israelites at the River Pishon (see Genesis 2:11-12 on the River Pishon that encompasses the Land of Havilah “where there is crystal and onyx”).

But the Amorite books and the idols of precious stones remained unscathed by fire or water. So, Kenaz placed them on an altar. God sent down heavenly dew upon the books obliterating what was written in them. Then God sent forth lightning to destroy what was left. At God’s command, an angel cast the seven jewel encrusted idols to the bottom of the sea, where the deep swallowed them up. Another angel brought down from heaven twelve other gems, on which were engraved the names of the twelve sons of Jacob, the forefathers of the Israelite tribes. Kenaz set these precious stones in the Ephod (the outer garment of the High Priest), together with the twelve stones on the Hoshen (Breast-Plate) (see Exodus 28:15-29). Finally, Kenaz deposited the twelve precious stones he had received from the angel in the Holy Ark -- together with the Tablets of the Covenant – “where they illumined the earth like the midday sun … and they are there to this day”.

image: Breastplate on the front of the central Sephardic synagogue in Ramat Gan, by Dr. Avishai Teicher Pikiwiki The plan works, and together they conquer a great deal of land. Benjamin is next, with unfavourable results, followed by the Tribe of Joseph. But what happens when Joshua dies? This is where things get complicated, as Judges 1:1 reads: “After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the Lord, ‘Which of us shall be the first to go up against the Canaanites and attack them?’” What follows is a disjointed account of each tribe entering the land of Israel and attempting to conquer different cities from their current inhabitants: Judah and Simeon team up to attack a few areas, while Benjamin, Ephraim, Manasseh, Zebulun, Asher, and Naphtali wander off in different directions, more or less successfully taking over territory. Even within each tribe, it is mysterious who is running the show: Caleb, who would seem like a worthy leader of the tribe of Judah, offers his daughter in marriage to anyone who can capture the town of Kiryat-Sefer.

It certainly seems like total anarchy.

This anarchic approach to leadership continues throughout the book of Judges, as leaders rise up, attain prestige and power through military success, and eventually die, leaving a power void for another charismatic leader to fill. But as the book of Judges continues, it becomes clear that this form of leadership is not sustainable; the tribes fall apart, warring with one another and sinning in violent and disturbing ways. We must wait until the book of Samuel before Israel will unite again. Israel is referred to as a people rather than a state, corresponding to the biblical depiction of Israel as a decentralized group of tribes in this period.

Illustration: courtesy of George Blumenthal

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud1-blumenthal.jpg","1536x1536-width":825,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud1-blumenthal.jpg","2048x2048-width":895,"2048x2048-height":1666
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud1-blumenthal.jpg","1536x1536-width":825,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud1-blumenthal.jpg","2048x2048-width":895,"2048x2048-height":1666
Alex Israel teaches Tanakh at the Pardes Institute, Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi and Matan, Jerusalem.
