According to the Targum, this was a generic prophet. The Midrash says that this was Pinchas son of Elazar the Kohen. The angel of the Lord is a person in both of these interpretations. Pinchas had a role at the end of the book of Joshua leading a delegation against the tribes in the trans-Jordan. The problem is that this phrase was almost universally used to mean an actual angel in the Torah. For example, in Exodus, an angel of the Lord speaks to Moses from the burning bush and an angel of the Lord blocks Balaam and his donkey.

Why would God send an angel to deliver this message? In Judges 2 they disconnect from their shared past: “And there arose another generation… that knew not the LORD, nor yet the work which He had wrought for Israel.” (Judges 2:10)

This ignorance proves fatal --- and chronic. Like the new Pharaoh who “arose” in Egypt and “knew not Joseph” (Exudus 1:8), the new generation of Israelites acted badly: ignorance led to ingratitude, and ingratitude to betrayal. They abandoned God and He abandoned them in turn. He did relent eventually and sent a judge to deliver them, only to watch the same loss of memory occur again, leading to yet another episode in a seemingly endless cycle of ignorance-betrayal-subjugation-deliverance.

It is tempting to focus on the unique particulars of each of these episodes: Ehud’s left-handed maneuvers, Deborah’s vision, Gideon’s tricks. But the repetitive moment when each episode gives way to another – when, after God’s deliverance, the next generation forgets Who saved them and dooms itself to suffer – deserves attention. How could they forget such monumental victories?

The text does not explicitly address this question. But it offers us an opportunity to reexamine and reframe it in Judges 10-12, where it focuses on the way generations affect each other in a particular case. Jephthah, a bastard, was cast out by his brothers upon his father’s death. Later, however, his people beseeched him to return and lead them in war against the Ammonites, just as they beseeched God, whom they abandoned earlier for idols, to aid their war. Both God and Jephthah initially refused. Why should we, they asked, deliver those who abandoned us?

By placing Jephthah’s abandonment in parallel to each generation’s abandonment of God, the text portrays the Israelites’ chronic loss of memory as an act of betrayal. But who is the traitor?

The description in Judges 2 seems to imply that each generation is responsible for its own ignorance. But Jephthah’s story draws our attention to the role parents play in their children’s fate. After Jephthah was restored to his place amongst his people, he made a careless vow that doomed his only daughter. Like his own father, Jephthah failed to guarantee his child’s place in the community. Perhaps this failure, and not the loss of memory itself, is a better key to understanding the chronic inter-generational disconnectedness in Judges. Perhaps instead of asking ‘how could they forget’ we, as parents and educators with our own children to raise, should rather ask ‘why did they fail at passing their memories forward.’

Image: Study for the Daughter of Jephtha. It is a unique attribute of human beings that we have the capacity to learn from people we have never personally encountered. The miracle of culture, words, art, and artifacts, is that our consciousness is able to absorb the experiences and perspectives of people who lived and died prior to our being born, to people who lived (or live) in places we have never visited. I recall travelling to Uganda and sailing up the Nile River and being surprised that a place I had never previously visited could still be familiar.

This capacity, to absorb the insights, experiences, or visions of unknown lands and people, is an attribute unique to humans. Other mammals have the capacity to learn from their encounters with others, even to modify their behavior based on the insistence of others, but only if there is a direct personal encounter.

While it may be true that it is a special gift of people to be able to transmit memories we never experienced, to see with the eyes of others, to internalize perspectives of people very dissimilar to ourselves, it is also true that the intensity of our memories fade the further they recede from actual, recent experience.

And so we find in the Bible as well. The Children of Israel continue to serve God even after the death of Joshua, and even during the lifetimes of the elders who came after. But two generations later, even though they were still telling the old stories and living in the same land, the memories had already started to fade, “Another generation arose after them, which had not experienced the LORD or the deeds that God had wrought for Israel. And the Israelites did what was offensive to the LORD (Joshua 2:10,11).”

How do we counteract this all too natural propensity to forget, to let the passage of time or distance dull our awareness of insights we had already harvested?

There is no perfect antidote, but Judaism puts its energy into three primary activities: the telling of stories, the ritual enactment of learning opportunities, and extensive time spent in community. These occasions help refresh the ancient tellings, train our behavior through sacred deeds, and keep us in the company of those who are also wrestling to retain our shared memories across the years.

We listen and tell. We refrain and we do. We assemble and we share.
