In chapter 31 of Deuteronomy, Moses gives his final address to the people. In it, there is a fatalistic message from God. God announces that when the people enter the land they will disobey God, they will worship other gods, and they will be punished. Here, in chapter 23, Joshua tries to change this decree. He warns the people not to worship idols. They must resist the temptations of the people around them. God will help them remove the people, but the ones that remain will be a snare and a test. Resist the trap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chapter 24 has a different goodbye message it seems. In chapter 24, Joshua reviews the history of the Israelites starting from Terach. This seems like a second goodbye speech, but these are linked. Moses never started his reviews of the history of the Israelites that far back. Why does Joshua start with Terach?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Then Joshua said to all the people, \u2018Thus said the L<\/span>ORD<\/span>, the God of Israel: In olden times, your forefathers\u2014Terach, father of Abraham and father of Nahor\u2014lived beyond the Euphrates and worshiped other gods. But I took Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through the whole land of Canaan and multiplied his offspring. I gave him Isaac, and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave Esau the hill country of Seir as his possession, while Jacob and his children went down to Egypt' (24:1-3).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Abraham grew up surrounded by idols. His father worshiped them, and yet he was not tempted. God was able to take Abraham away from the life of idol worship. Isaac and Jacob also lived in the land of Canaan. Jacob also had to deal with Esau. All three of the forefathers lived in the land of Canaan surrounded by idol worshipers. They were able to continue to follow God despite these temptations. Between these two chapters, Joshua tries two different ways to warn the people. Chapter 23 is direct. Do not be tempted. Chapter 24 is experiential. Your forefathers were in the same position, and they were able to follow God despite the idol worship around them, you should too.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Living in the Western United States I encounter Joshuas from time to time. No, not the Biblical, but the botanical, the <\/span>yucca brevifolia<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This particular spiny yucca, native to the Mojave desert, is known the world over as \u201cthe Joshua Tree.\u201d Surprisingly, the tree\u2019s name is related to our Biblical hero.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Legend has it that Mormons traveling westward to escape persecution named the tree Joshua. Either because the tree\u2019s unique shape reminded them of Joshua reaching up towards the sky in prayer (perhaps while holding a shofar) or because they envisioned the tree as an encouraging sign leading them westward to their Zion, just as Joshua lead the Israelites westward into our promised land.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is sadly ironic, and somewhat humorous that to millions of people Joshua is not the man who miraculously split the Jordan, brought down the walls of Jericho, or defeated 31 kings, but the tree, the National Park, and the U2 album that bear his name.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The irony is especially acute due to Joshua\u2019s black and white message in our chapter-don\u2019t assimilate. Cling to God, he tells us, and not to the nations in your midst. Don\u2019t let these foreign cultures seep into our way of life, lest we veer from the book of Moses right or left.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Mormons, National parks, rock albums oy vey!<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Please Joshua don\u2019t roll over in your grave (especially since according to tradition your <\/span>yahrtzeit<\/span><\/em> was yesterday, the 26th of Nissan). The final two chapters of the book constitute Joshua\u2019s parting words to Israel. While Joshua indicates the extent of the people\u2019s miraculous conquest, he also reminds them that much of the land remains to be settled, and that dangers still lurk at Israel's door. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Joshua correctly posits, as Moses had before him, that Israel's success will depend upon their ability to resist the siren call of Canaan's loutish pantheon of gods. The military threat had long passed, but the more serious cultural and moral threats continued to live on. In order to fully appreciate Joshua's fears, one must put the matter into perspective: Of all of the people in the ancient world, only the Israelites proclaimed the principle of a single and transcendent God, only they declared its corollary of an absolute moral code, only their teachers were consumed with a vision of a united humanity striving for the realization of a higher purpose. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Joshua's address is part of a literary paradigm in which Israel's greatest moments of triumph are tempered with grave words of caution. The technique of introducing dire warnings precisely at moments of great national success can be better understood as an emphatic statement about the precariousness of the human condition. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Throughout history, nations that achieved shining glory were unable to sustain it for long. This is because in the life of nations, just as in the lives of individuals, equilibrium can only be maintained with great effort. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Today's triumphs breed the indolence and apathy that spawn tomorrow's defeats. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

By employing the literary technique of always appending a note of caution to even the most exalted moments, the Tanakh makes it abundantly clear: Our success as individuals or as the nation of Israel can only be sustained as long as we steadfastly hold on to our principles even when it appears that the battle has been won. Attainment of any sort, and certainly of the spiritual variety, is always transitory \u2014 unless a constant effort is expended in order to sustain it. And while we are able to dream of a brighter future and to sacrifice mightily in order to realize it, we often become complacent once the noble goal has been achieved. The great challenge, then, is to prepare not only for the day of triumph, but for the day after as well. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Joshua was particularly anxious about the prospective dangers of assimilation and intermarriage and he warned the people not to tolerate the presence of idolaters in their midst lest, they pose an existential threat to God\u2019s nation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Know for certain that the LORD your God will not continue to drive these nations out before you; they shall become a snare and a trap for you, a scourge to your sides and thorns (<\/span>tzeninim<\/span><\/em>) in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you (v. 13).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Both the thought and its literary formulation are familiar to us from an identical warning that Moses issued to the people shortly before his own departure.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But if you do not dispossess the inhabitants of the land, those whom you allow to remain shall be stings (<\/span>tzeninim<\/span><\/em>) in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land in which you live (Num. 33:55) ;<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These are the only two places in the entire Tanakh in which the word <\/span>tzeninim<\/span><\/em> appears and their use in identical contexts strongly supports the assumption that Joshua was deliberately paraphrasing a Torah verse.   1. Literary echoes<\/span><\/i>. In Joshua\u2019s farewell oration, there are a number of quotes and allusions to expressions in previous books.   2. Snares, traps, scourges and thorns<\/span><\/i>. The images used for impending catastrophe stem from the geopolitical context. Evil neighbors don\u2019t always mean big all-out war, but more often a continuous nuisance: \u201cthey shall become a snare and a trap for you, a scourge to your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land \u2026\u201d (verse 13).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. And on a more personal note<\/span><\/i>. Joshua notes casually: \u201cI am now going the way of all the earth...\u201d (verse 14). This raises the question of Joshua\u2019s underlying tone to the people: Is he optimistically trying to inspire them to choose the good? Or is he motivated more by fear of what is to come?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. 100% satisfaction guaranteed?<\/i> \u201c...not one of the good things that the LORD your God promised you has failed to happen; they have all come true for you\u201d (verse 14). Why is it so important for Joshua to emphasize that absolutely everything was delivered in full? Perhaps because of the challenge that is raised by the nations that are left, that still remain in the Land?
