At the end of the chapter, Joshua and Elazar pass away. In between, the text mentions that they buried Joseph’s sarcophagus in Shechem. Back at the end of Genesis, Joseph makes his brothers swear to bury him in Israel:

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. God will surely take notice of you and bring you up from this land to the land that He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob” (Genesis 50:24).

We later see that Moses brings the bones when they leave Egypt. “And Moses took with him the bones of Joseph, who had exacted an oath from the children of Israel…” (Exodus 13:19). The next mention of Joseph’s bones is in this chapter. Why did the people wait until after Joshua’s death to bury Joseph? The answer may be a few verses earlier in Genesis. We learn that Joseph lived in Egypt after Jacob’s death in an oddly worded verse: “Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim and also the sons of Machir the son of Menashe was born on his knees.” (Genesis 50:23).

Why does the verse use two phrases to describe Joseph living to see great great great grandchildren? It would have been easier to say “Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim and Menashe” or “Joseph saw the sons of Machir ben Menashe and Ephraim”. There must be a reason behind the use of the double language. This question is compounded by the fact that we learn in Exodus (1:8) that after Joseph died a new Pharaoh is crowned who does not recognize Joseph. After this, Moses was born.

Moses is part of the third generation of Levi (Exodus 6:16-20). How could Joseph have lived to see the third generation after Ephraim if the third generation is the period that coincides with Moses’ birth? Then Pharaoh would have had to know Joseph!

The answer lies in the double language of verse 23. The use of “the children of Machir son of Manasseh were likewise born upon Joseph’s knees” in the second part of the verse indicates that Joseph saw the sons of Machir being born. The use of “and he saw” in the first part conveys something different. Joseph did not literally see the third generation of Ephraim. Instead, Joseph saw a vision of the third generation. The most prominent member of this third generation after Ephraim is Joshua. Only after Joseph sees in his vision that Joshua, a descendant of Ephraim, will bring the people into the Land of Israel does he tell his brothers that God will take them out of Egypt and bring them to the Land of Israel. By mentioning Joseph’s burial here, the text links the end of Genesis with the end of Joshua. These two stories are the bookends of the Exodus story.

https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/11/637d26d28b03b-637d26d28b03cJo24-bookends.png.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/11/637d26d28b03b-637d26d28b03cJo24-bookends.png-150x150.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/11/637d26d28b03b-637d26d28b03cJo24-bookends.png-300x150.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/11/637d26d28b03b-637d26d28b03cJo24-bookends.png-768x384.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/11/637d26d28b03b-637d26d28b03cJo24-bookends.png-1024x512.png
1536x1536":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/11/637d26d28b03b-637d26d28b03cJo24-bookends.png.png","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":768,"2048x2048":"https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/11/637d26d28b03b-637d26d28b03cJo24-bookends.png.png","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":960
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/11/637d26d28b03b-637d26d28b03cJo24-bookends.png-1200x600.png
https://cetwpuploads.blob.core.windows.net/wp929/uploads/2022/11/637d26d28b03b-637d26d28b03cJo24-bookends.png-840x420.png
Joseph There is a splitting of the sea, a crossing onto dry land, the establishment of a covenant, war with local tribes, and an eventual distribution of land. In the lens of this chapter, the exodus and wilderness narratives serve as a vehicle to promote a specific ideology: God as a deity held in high esteem, and therefore, worthy of praise. The chapter shows how God merits this praise through the performance of military conquest on behalf of Israel. This chapter’s significance, then, lies in its ability to summarize key episodes within the wilderness that will end up justifying the covenant made through the chapter. This concluding chapter of Joshua is similar in tone to Moses’ final speeches in Deuteronomy as both of them include a portion where they lay out the covenant as a choice that implores the people to deliberate on their options and then seek to accept God’s will. With the formation of the covenant completed, Joshua, like Moses, dies after dismissing the tribes of Israel to their allotted portions.

In 24:14-15, after summarizing how God has been to the people, Joshua asks them to choose whether to follow God. In 24:16-18, the people choose to accept God’s will, yet in 24:19-24, Joshua challenges them. He states that they cannot truly keep a covenant with God. This serves as a final test for Israel before taking the Promised Land. Joshua again repeats the warnings of breaking this covenant citing harsh punishment, reminiscent of the warnings implied in 24:7, 17.

Carolyn Pressler in her Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, argues that the people’s acceptance in 24:21 displays Israel making a deeper deliberation on the choice to accept God’s will. 24:22 is strange as it has Israel serving as a witness against themselves. Despite this odd construction of Israel’s agreement, Israel serving as their own witness is another example of Israel’s deeper deliberation. 24:23-24 serve as fulfillment of the actions Joshua instructed the people from 24:14-15.

Deeper deliberation has resulted in action. According to the Zohar (I, 53a) Joshua “died only through the incitement of the Serpent” (see Genesis, Chapter 3). Indeed, Joshua did not participate in the Sin of the Golden Calf and therefore was one of the few mortals who “died free of sin”. Rashi (to Joshua 24:30) preserves an otherwise unknown Midrashic tradition that Joshua’s burial place called here Timnat Serah (Joshua 24:30), but elsewhere Timnat Heres (see Judges 8:13, 14:18), because “Heres” means sun (see Job 9:7). And so, at Timnat Heres a figure of the sun was set up over Joshua’s grave to commemorate his commanding the sun to stand still in the sky (see Joshua 10:12-13). And those passing by would say: Woe to this one who performed such a great feat and still died”. Jacob’s blessings end Genesis, and most famously, the entire book of Deuteronomy is a parting speech by Moses. Here too, in our final chapter, we have Joshua relating a condensed version of the national narrative. In all these cases, we can learn as much from what is left out of these summaries as from what is said in them.

The brief history of the Israelites given in this chapter is a polemic of chosenness and responsibility. Abraham was chosen by God, and everything that happened to his descendents is part of God’s plan for them: the deliverance from slavery in Egypt, the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea, and the numerous victorious battles with nations along the way. None of the stories of complaint against God that dot the books of Exodus and Numbers are mentioned here; neither are the dramatic stories around the sin of the golden calf or the ten spies. Even the revelation of the Torah at Sinai is omitted. Only divine deliverance.

This story forces a certain perspective on the people listening. They are made to identify with Joshua’s retelling of the story -- “Your own eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians” (verse 7) -- even though none of them were alive at the time of the exodus. At the same time, Joshua’s framing might contradict their own recent experiences: “I sent a plague before you to drive out [the nations]... it was not by your sword or your bow” (verse 12). For those who had just recently fought with their swords and bows (see 19:47, for example), this might have been a strange thing to hear!

But framing works. After telling this particular version of their history, Joshua gives the Israelites a strange three-way decision to make: either worship the gods that Abraham’s family used to, or the gods of the Amorites in Canaan, or the one God of Israel (verses 14-15). After hearing such a story, what could the people do but agree? Even when he goads them, saying that they will not be able to remain faithful, they redouble their enthusiastic commitment to God. (Stay tuned for the book of Judges to see what happens to this promise!)

What can we make of this rhetoric? Sometimes, such speech is dangerous. We have to make sure that we notice how national narratives and memories are constructed, and become sensitive to the way they are framed. When we are told something general about the way the world is, we need to learn to listen to what is being silenced or erased through this telling, and wonder why. And when a choice is presented between a number of fixed options, we must wonder whether any other alternatives also exist. Only in this way can our choices be authentic, and our commitments truly be our own.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jo24-frame-story.png","1536x1536-width":800,"1536x1536-height":600,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jo24-frame-story.png","2048x2048-width":800,"2048x2048-height":600
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jo24-frame-story.png","1536x1536-width":800,"1536x1536-height":600,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jo24-frame-story.png","2048x2048-width":800,"2048x2048-height":600
Why Feature Balaam? It takes the form of a concise retrospective on Jewish history from its dawning in the age of the patriarchs (vs. 2-4) through the slavery in, and exodus from, Egypt (5-7), crossing the wilderness (7-9), and the conquest of Canaan (11-13).

One detail from each successive era is included: God’s distinction between Jacob and Esau; the crossing of the Red Sea; Balaam’s unsuccessful attempt to curse Israel; and the conquest of Jericho. Arguably, of all that transpired during the forty years in the wilderness, the episode involving Balaam is hardly the most noteworthy; why was it alone chosen?

I would suggest that the answer lies in the singularity of the threat Balaam posed to the Jewish nation and the unique way in which that threat was neutralized. With the death of Joshua, a new generation prepares to continue the process of settlement and to secure their place in the land, under God's watchful eye. The leadership transitions noted in the final verses neatly bring the book to a close by recalling its earliest chapters. In its penultimate verse, the book notes a final event associated with those times:

The bones of Joseph that the people of Israel had taken up from Egypt they buried in Shekhem... (Josh. 24:32)

Joseph's burial completes our account, the same Joseph who had been sold by his brothers down to Egypt. Joseph's descent to Egypt was in the end the cause of his family's survival, for they too came down when famine blanketed the land of Canaan. There they were welcomed by Pharaoh and enjoyed his beneficence, but eventually a new Pharaoh arose to enslave them.

But during the years spent in Egypt in loyal service to the Pharaoh, Joseph enjoyed honor, respect, and wealth. Nevertheless, the Torah records that at the time of his death Joseph longed to return home: "Joseph placed an oath upon the children of Israel saying: 'God will surely remember and redeem you, and you will then take up my bones from here!'" (Gen. 50:25). Though Joseph achieved greatness in his adopted land, he never forgot the legacy of his ancestors and the special status of Canaan in their story. Joseph was perceptive enough to realize that a nation cannot fulfill its mission without a land, and that Israel's land was Canaan, and Canaan only.

The conclusion of the Book of Joshua with the story of Joseph's burial therefore closes a great circle. The saga that began with the children of Jacob in Canaan, was followed by their descent to Egypt and lengthy sojourn there as strangers, continued with their jubilant exodus and return to the land as a nation, now concludes with the burial of Joseph. While Joseph himself died in Egypt far from Canaan's hallowed earth, his descendants returned to the land, lovingly carrying his bones back home.

Joshua: The Challenge of the Promised Land (Jerusalem: Koren, 2015); Chapter: “Joshua’s Final Address”

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jo24-circle.gif","1536x1536-width":580,"1536x1536-height":493,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jo24-circle.gif","2048x2048-width":580,"2048x2048-height":493
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jo24-circle.gif","1536x1536-width":580,"1536x1536-height":493,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jo24-circle.gif","2048x2048-width":580,"2048x2048-height":493
Alex Israel teaches Tanakh at the Pardes Institute, Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi and Matan, Jerusalem.
